    Hi everybody,
     
    a first attempt at map making. 
     
    Kieme's Highway
     
    A few statements to describe this map: 
    -Main theme of this map is a highway running east-west with an interesction in the middle going South and two overpass bridges.
    -map size is 2000x2000 meters roughly.
    -it is practically flat, the main elevation is 19, while depressions go down to 18 (17 in the corners) and up to 21/22/23 in wooded areas, highway is at 20.
    -the buildings are mainly of 1 level or 2 levels. Few exceptions for some buildings at 3 or even 4, but these have no Windows and/or unusable rooftops, so there is no key building dominating the map.
    -large open areas, with few complexes sorrounded by walls (such as an industrial area, a residential area, some farms).
    -wooded areas are small, vehicle passable, slightly elevated and with not too thick trees.
    -there are many ditches between fields.
    -it has few flavor objects.
    -there are no landmarks names.
    -this map is made up and does not represent a real world location.
     
    Notes: this map works best with my previous Modular Buildings mod and Modular Buildings Add-on. Moreover, it makes use of the Optional Highway mod (tagged version).
    HD terrain mod is best suited but not mandatory.

    Kieme CMBS Optional Highway (HD)
     
    What is this mod:
    this mod is intended to give more options to the scenario designer sacrificing the ability to make slanted highways.
    So, the mod changes all the Tiles used by "highway" editor road option and converts them to the following assets: NS/EW asphalt highway (new asphalt), NS/EW asphalt highway (worn out asphalt), parking lot, airport concrete slabs.
    This mod is in HD, that means it has higher resolution textures than the original ones. However, it should not add a strong impact to game performance because the original textures were of a very low resolution.
     
    This mod comes in 2 versions:
    -version: total conversion (will change the appearance of highway Tiles in all existing maps/scenarios/quick battles/campaigns)
    -version: TAG (will change the appearance of highway Tiles in the pre-designed scenarios with this precise tag that will be released in the future)
     
    This mod has 1 add on:
    -editor buttons (will change the editor buttons for highway to make it easier to deploy the new assets - for scenario makers)
     
    Note for scenario designers: the total conversion version should be installed if you want to make it easier to see what is being used within the 2d map editor. Then, you can uninstall the total conversion and keep using the TAG version from there on.
     
    If you are unsure what to download just download the TAG version, so that it won't change anything in your existing game, but will give you the chance to see correctly new user created maps which will use this mod. The files should go to your mods folder as usual.

    The following pack has 3 quick battle ready maps, based on the one posted above, suited for meeting engagement only (deploy areas in the corners NE/SW).
    All versions have the same size and deploy areas but more objectives (small has 1 objective, medium has 3, large has 5). all objectives are of the occupy type (point values in brackets).
    It's up to you to decide what version to play with, just keep in mind that the size is the same. For example: if you want to play a small battle with few forces, the small versions with only 1 victory location in the middle would be best suited to avoid dispersion. At the same time, if you play a huge battle with large forces the large version gives you not only that big objective in the middle but 4 more minor objectives around the map, but you might still want to play with just 1 objective, it's up to you.
     
    Important: this quick battle map pack is intended ONLY for player versus player games.

    Russia reinforced what Western and Ukrainian officials described as yet another invasion on Wednesday [April 7th 2018], sending armored troops across the Crimean border as it expanded the conflict to a new section of Ukrainian territory. The latest incursion, which Ukraine’s military said included multiple companies of Russian Federation  units to include Armor, Mechanized Infantry, Artillery, and Russian Air Force support, was at least the third movement of troops and weapons from Russia across the southeastern part of the Crimean border this week. NATO has replied in kind to this new threat by re-deploying a Task Force compromised of several companies of US/UKR Armor , Mechanized Infantry, Mobile Artillery, and NATO led air assets.
     
    The US administration,  “has asserted over the past week that the Russians had moved artillery, air-defense systems and armor to capture the bridges spanning the Dnieper River in Kherson Ukraine. The Russian aim, one Western official said, “may possibly be to seize an outlet to the sea in the event that Russia tries again to establish a separatist enclave in eastern Ukraine.”  ‘These incursions indicate a Russian-directed offensive is likely underway’, stated Willis O’Brien, the State Department spokesman .  At the department’s daily briefing in Washington, Mr. O’Brien also criticized what he called the Russian government’s ‘unwillingness to tell the truth’ that its military had yet again sent soldiers as deep as 30 miles inside Ukraine territory.”
     
    According to the Western press, this shows that the November  7th 2017 ceasefire agreement, signed by NATO, the Ukrainian government and the Russian Federation as the West breathed a collective sigh of relief, is now "collapsing." Since its signing, the accord has been "battered," "doubtful," "strained," "shaky," and "crumbling." Two days ago, Washington told Moscow to obey the truce. Today, Moscow told Washington to do the same. Consider this April 3rd 2018 headline, from the World Financial Times: "Heaviest Shelling Since Truce Renews Fears of Another Ukraine War."  All of this implies that the ceasefire never existed in the first place.
     
    The world patiently waits as yet another clash between NATO and the Russian Federation looms on the horizon.

    OK CM community the back-story has been laid, armies have been chosen and orders have been given.  The two teams are busy finalizing their initial deployments as you are reading this news wire.  This is shaping up to be a big conflict as I have been privy to both sides forces.  Believe me when I say that both teams are well organized and primed to lay some hate and discontent upon their enemies!   Stay tuned as the campaign for "The Battle of Kherson" will be kicking off shortly!

    Sigh. Not that right wing macho fantasy of armed insurrection, again.  I can't recall the NRA coming out and championing their pet cause of citizens taking up arms to fight government oppression following the recent police shootings at Ferguson. I guess that right to insurrection is *selective*. Only applies to ranchers grazing on public lands.

    Actually, there are some..
     
    First of all standard graphics are done by one or very few people who have to deal with all the 2d "painting" of the game, and that's a huge task to deal with.
    So, having to work on so many files of different nature it's hard to keep an extreme standard quality.
     
    Increasing quality would require a lot more time, thus asking many more months of development time. Time is money and BFC has to do cuts as well as set a certain quality to assure a good time/development ratio.
     
    Second, BFC sets a certain level over which the game must not go, and this level is about performance on a given machine (minimum computer requirements).
     
    Increasing quality would hurt that choice, force BFC to increase the target level, increase the minimum requirements, thus cutting a potential portion (estimated) of customers away... moreover, all of this would require game computing resources, so changes on the programming side should be done too.
     
    All in all I agree that at least some textures of the original game are not really good (personally, I dislike the buildings, that's where I started modding CM2x games), but we must keep in mind the contraints BFC has to deal with and operate within.

    I am one of the ones who complained.  I came in one morning to look for a specific thread.  I found the first six threads started by John and another one only 8-9 down.  One was on emoticons, one was on some issue with sound on youtube, one was on a video of the T-90 which could have easily been just a post in several existing T-90 threads, one was on Grad rockets falling on a city in the Ukraine (which also could gone into an existing thread if it really was relevant), one on Russian field rations, one on a video of the XM25, and another on a training video that no one seems to where it's from, and one legacy one on the A-10 in US service.
     
    So maybe 2 you could say were relevant.  Three are clearly not relevant, and a couple could have been just part of existing threads.  I have seen his behavior in other threads and the pattern is to spam the forum with so much stuff that finding anything useful about the actual game becomes difficult.  I don't mind the thread here and there about equipment or units in real life, but I have seen where this ends up.  I was just trying to point out that it would be nice to have the game forum have the majority of the posts about the actual game.
     
    There is a general forum.  There are forums all over the web for this stuff.  I initially asked nicely to back off of some of that stuff.

    CM games work on a real basis, nothing like most rts games which give a fictional value x to armor or weapons.
    In those games, if X is armor and Y is weapon, if X>Y the vehicle survives, if X<Y the vehicle dies. Rock paper scissors, just that.
     
    In CM games there are a lot more variables taken into account, thus reducing the rng (random number generation - casuality) a lot.
     
    This means that the armor of a vehicle is modelled as the real vehicle, for example: front armor is stronger than side armor, front armor can have weak points, there are different armor thicknesses based upon the precise spot etc. but their values are based upon reality (as much as references can give or proof or are estimated by devs). Same goes for the weapon systems, many calculations are taken into account when the game needs to decide what happens when a given weapon (or projectile) hits a given armor location.. angles of impact, technical characteristics of the projectile, speed etc. And the armor can be of very different kinds or have different layers (armor-era-spaced-stand off etc.)
     
    Moreover, vehicles have Subsystems and crew that can be damaged or destroyed, thus influencing the said vehicle capabilities.
     
    About ERA, example:
    If an ERA block is hit, and works as it was designed, said block will be not visibile anymore in the 3d model of the vehicle and it won't be there the next time a projectile might hit there..
     
    About the challenger, we have M1A2 SEP v2 now in game, and while being very difficult to destroy it's not at all an invincible tank.
     
    In the interface you might notice some level bars and color indications (dots) which you might think give a value to some characteristics such as speed, acceleration, armor protection etc. but keep in mind those are only generic visual aids for the non-expert player intended to give a broad idea of what's what.
     
    So, in the end, CM is a ton time more complex than you initially thought.

    The purpose of this thread is to provide a central location into which I can put information and the like which I deem significant and worth knowing about, as well as my own observations and opinions, subject to the usual BFC rules, as well as certain request and strictures coming from BFC. In this way, there should be no further thread proliferation and "real post" ranking issues. Other members are, of course, welcome to participate in what I post, but I ask that you be respectful. Argue against the ideas I present; don't attack me. As some may have noted, I have formal requests in to the Mods to kill two separate threads. If they choose to do so, that should further alleviate matters on the CMBS Forum as a whole.
