He was clearly inspired by the movie "T-34" in which a Russian AT gunner waited for the exact same opportunity.   The fidelity of this game is always astonishing.

It takes time for Hwd to catch up with new concepts.
When I was a teen I read all the Philip K Dick books and his writing affected how I saw the world - may have inspired the Matrix writers (Wachowski Bros.).  I spent the next 10 years trying to convince Hwd studios to work on a project based on his concepts - and for 10 years was shot down all the time.  After I gave up, "Blade Runner" was made, and since then most of the Sci-Fi TV series and movies have much basis in the concepts Dick wrote about.
Actually it's interesting that the Wachowski Bros don't mention getting any inspiration from Dick even though it's pretty obvious if you know Dick's work.

Yes, Hacksaw Ridge probably the most violent and gut wrenching film I ever seen - like they went all out to beat Saving Private Ryan in that regard.  I dunno about the story particularly.
Dunkirk I thought a wonderful "Art War Film" or "War Art Film"...   Not sure I seen that genre type of movie b4, so maybe new.  They messed around with time so it's not a traditional linear timeline film.
Darkest Hour is not a war movie I suppose.  But, nonetheless a brilliant depiction of that same time period in the halls of power at Westminster.  Gary Oldman deserved his Oscar.

I count 42 Kieme vehicles in my Z plus another 9 or so that I do not use as they conflict.  But all have been uploaded to Bootie for his new CMMODS.  It's just a question of when Bootie has time to make em all available.

Highly recommend you visit some of the old WITPAE sites where there is a TON of useful/vital info and analysis that goes way beyond the manual as well as very useful check lists and advice.  You can easily find em via Google IIRC.

Am a huge fan of WITPAE and it's my "go to" game when I get burned out playing CM (been playing since 1999 so...).  But, it's easy to burn out on WITPAE as it is very intellectually demanding with so many features/things one has to remember - most of which are not in the manual.  One needs to study some of the WITPAE forums - some of which haven't had posts in years, but are still an invaluable source of hints and info.

That is very exciting news...  and yes, I can only imagine the time and effort to make a good campaign that involves force and ammo conservation (and alternate "storyline" paths hopefully).
Still, since you are on a midwest farm you will have no reason to leave your programming room over the winter period for several months.

Erwin got a reaction from sttp in Here is What I Dont Understand about BF?
The incremental approach for CM2 development has worked well for some years and put some very well deserved $ in BF's pockets.  But, I feel a boredom setting in.  Each module has virtually identical gameplay value as the previous - just adding a few new units, and perhaps a few bugs cleaned up.  Until there is another big step forward in evolution I predict a slow decline as we saw with CM1 over the past 6-7+ years.  The amazing work that Aquila has accomplished for graphics and the outstanding innovations of designer like MOS with his TOC and COUP scenarios has been exciting.  Perhaps the "Heaven and Earth" project will breathe some new life into the system for a while.  But, after playing the CM game series since 1999 for over 20 years, I find my interest flagging.  I have always bought whatever BF released immediately.  But, I just can't summon the interest to preorder the new CMFI module (as yet).  And am sad about that - like an old friend fading away...

It's the bunching up that's the problem - even in defense.  In my games it's often that I want to put a couple of HMG's or several squads in a particular building so they can blow the hell out of something, and then they get hit with many casualties more than if there had only been one team or squad in the building.

Have learned that one should never keep units close together anyplace that isn't 100% safe.  A repeat error I make is advancing and bunching up inf in a building.

Good to know.  That is not made clear in the briefing.

This has been the default game formation since CM1 days.  However, in CM2 that also means that an enemy hit on the lead tank can easily take out both tanks (plus any other vehicles situated along that line).

    ***SPOILERS***

After the T34 platoon on the left flank is killed, the path to the river on that flank is pretty open.  However, the road thru the trees next to the RR track is a bear.  Despite having a couple of tanks, 2 Stummels and two HT's pouring area fire at the foxholes, it takes time to winkle the enemy out.  (I hour 20 minutes for this scenario goes too fast.)  When you do, the enemy run back to the west (the river) and their friendly lines.
In this action, have suffered half a dozen inf casualties - half via friendly fire.     The 75mm HE expl)osions caused by the Stummels seem to have a bad effect a dozen or more meters away on my own guys (who I thought I had placed safely far away from the line of fire).  Am at the 50 minute to go mark and I will send the left flank company of tanks and company of inf to force a river crossing with arty support while one platoon of tanks and inf plus recon grind away at the road and foxholes. One may have overwhelming force available but getting it deployed where it's needed is a challenge.
I coulda, shoulda, woulda placed a TRP on that area of the woods road.  But, placing TRP's is always a challenge as I hate placing em and then never having to use em.  So, I put all 5 around the town and river for the inevitable crossing.

Erwin got a reaction from Badger73 in Vehicular Movement Speed Penalties
I recall discussion that it does not matter what speed one orders vehicles to move - they will automatically slow down to move at an "appropriate speed" - ie like when crossing fences etc.  It sounds like that one could simply order vehicles to move FAST at all times since they will slow down automatically as needed.   That was good to know as I was wasting much time putting in waypoints with SLOW moves every time a vehicles would have to cross a fence or bush, or even RR tracks.
However, there has also been discussion that one should drive SLOW over some terrain -  like marshy ground to reduce % of bogging/immobilizing.  Any clarification on "safe" vehicular movement orders would be welcomed.

Thanks to this thread I overcame by CM burnout and am very much enjoying the first mission (halfway point).
My only remark is that the reinforcements came a bit too quickly/early imo as I generally use only a few units to recon for the first 10-15 minutes and that led to a traffic jam when the reinforcements turn up on top of the at start units in the first 5-10 minutes.  That's only an issue for me as I like to keep company formations together and I found I was sending platoons from different companies out mixed up which upsets my anal-obsessive sense of order (heh).  It would be nice to have a better idea of what units are coming as reinforcements and where they will turn up.  But, that's a very minor issue compared to the excellence of the overall map, situation and scenario.
I don't want any spoilers or advice (currently) but am curious at the casualties other players reported at the end of each mission so there is something to compare my progress with.  Anyone recall their mission results?
