3.
quote:
Originally posted by Moriarty: ...The first hint could have been the 81mm mortars landing on target 8 seconds into the first move...However, when the 14-inchers came in on T-2, taking out the KT, a StuG, 3 of 4 HTs, etc., it was apparent this wasn't your mama's Last Defense. Almost disappointing that the eight fighter-bombers and nine 76mm M4s in reinforcement didn't get to play....Lorak, no need to chalk this one up to anything more than fun. We have begun one of Rune's creations.

You think one of Rune's creations WON'T be just like that????? ------------------ Massada Lo Tipol Shenit
 4. Well, it pretty much is determined by how many points you have to spend in the first place, and whether you're fighting a combined arms or armoured QB.
 5. It may have been switching ammo types. I don't know what tanks like to fire at half-tracks in CM, but it may have had another round "up" at the time it targetted the HT. Yeah, well it should have fired whatever was in the tube, I know, but it don't and won't, so maybe it had to reload... My humble guess.
 6. I would not rate combat experience as a pre-requisite for elite status. In fact, too much combat experience has been proved to make even renowned units shy. In some notable examples such as Assorro in Sicily or Nijmegen in Holland, exceptional results were recorded by units who were too inexperienced and/or too desperate to know or care that what they were attempting was "impossible" and so they did it anyway, despite the odds. So I would rate an elite unit as one which was professionally trained and exceptionally motivated, with competent leadership and high morale, at the time. Also, a unit which is elite today, may not be tomorrow as leadership and morale vary. I might also consider an elite unit to be fanatic, though a fanatic unit might not necessarily be elite. It's a tough call.
 7.
quote:
Originally posted by Lacky: The British wrote off their Indian allies. No? The British did not insist on Indian nation representation in Belgium. Britain needed peace quickly.

Sadly, true. But don't assume Britain's need for peace after twenty years of war with Revolutionary/Imperial France was influenced by American power or ambitions across the sea. Despite being vastly outnumbered in North America in the order of 20:1, despite being hampered by a European war, Britain maintained the Canadas and was on the offensive in the North, South and Centre at war's end, and with the release of the RN after the exile of Napoleon, the spectre of a blockade weighed heavily in US deliberations. Americans may cloak the war under the banner of free trade and sailors' rights, but it was a cheap land-grab aimed at an opponent they thought was preoccupied and could not defend herself. It failed.
 8.
quote:
Some might say the United States lost the War of 1812, other's might declare it a stalemate. Yet, it was Britain who offered peace. And it was the United States who came away from that war with more land than they started with!

And at the Hartford Convention New England tabled a bid for secession from the Union to seek peace with Britain on her own terms. What land did the US come away with? The status quo ante bellum articulated in the Treaty of Ghent does not allow for the transfer of sovereignty of any lands. American gains from the war, such as they were, were the destruction of the Native Confederacy in the Northwest Territory, forever ending native hopes for an Indian nation, and a relaxation of maritime harrassment. If that was worth a ruined economy, more power to ya...

 11. For 1:35 offerings I'm generally a big fan of Dragon/DML and Academy. Some Academy offerings are re-releases of older kits by other manufacturers though, and aren't up to snuff with their new stuff. They make the best out-of-the box M18 or M113 you can find though. ------------------ My P-47 is a pretty good ship And she took a round coming 'cross the Channel last trip I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip Always got me through so far...

Well, saying the engineers should have gone first doesn't alter the fact that once the mines were spotted the vehicles should have been halted by the a/i. ------------------ My P-47 is a pretty good ship And she took a round coming 'cross the Channel last trip I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip Always got me through so far...
 14. I wouldn't call it gamey, but, as stated elsewhere, I wouldn't call it wise either. Its loss to the enemy can seriously hurt your victory total. Personally I try to pull them out of the line and/or use them to "hold" a VL. In any event I will make exception for Crocodiles -- if the flame projector is working it's still a tank in my book. Some argue that including gun-damaged tanks in a mass "rush" over open ground, in the hopes that they draw fire away from the undamaged tanks, is gamey. I've pondered this and I don't think the argument holds water. One only has to think of the American dive bomber pilots who had lost their bombs prior to attacking the Japanese carriers at Midway. They dove with the rest for the express purpose of helping the boys with the bombs get through. Maybe the analogy is not a good one, but it's the best I can think of. ------------------ My P-47 is a pretty good ship And she took a round coming 'cross the Channel last trip I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip Always got me through so far...
 15. I guess you could do that against the computer, but what's the point? If I bailed and reloaded an autosaved scenario every time something went wrong, I'd never get past turn three or four...

 17. Where can I get the updated version, Tiger? 21. WW1: The Bandy Papers (Three Cheers For Me, It's Me Again, & That's Me in the Middle), by Donald Jack. Horse-faced Bartholomew Bandy gets transferred to the RFC (where life expectency is a short six weeks) after capturing his Colonel in a flying raid on his own trench Won several awards for humour & it's a damn good read anyway. Not many comedies can bring a tear to your eye at the end. ------------------ My P-47 is a pretty good ship And she took a round coming 'cross the Channel last trip I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip Always got me through so far...
