Los got a reaction from Artkin in Infantry Effective Range-request and insight
Guys don’t waste your time scratching your heads on this. In agreement with Splinty. All our USArmy training ranges (typically pop up) had the farthest target out to 300m . With the iron sights it was all you could do to even see anything in the peep sight at that range. The AK47 was even crappier in this regard. Apart from my service I also owned an m16a2 and an akm. The M60 was good reliably out to 800m in bipod  configuration and effective with a certain Spread to 1200 in tripod w t&e.
An infantry platoon, rifles firing together are lethal out to 250m , and plinking beyond that. The Squad or platoon MGs extend that touch out to around 800-1000m plinking after that.

Here is some NTC action as it exists today (taken from my son's deployment 56th Stryker Brigade). Plenty of terrain shots:

Here is an example of something we created with Arma 3.
Every year  for the past 25 years friends come over for a week just to game (called a Loscon!). Using some of the zombie mods and tools people have created for the game, I created a zombie survival mission. It started at night at our "house" (on the island of Altis), and the only weapons we had were whatever guns are at my house. We had up to 8 players participating. We had to get our act together, get down to the county emergency assemble area, then found out that had been over run. Because some of our guys are real life helo pilots, one of them in game knew of a Helo at a distant airfield. But it needed some quick repairs. We had to head down to a work shop near where the National Guard had another assembly area. It was over run too but we were able to get military weapons.  After escaping that desperate situation we headed north to the airfield. Found the helo, repaired it and flew it east to the main airport on the island (It was short of fuel). We then  had to refuel it as more hordes attacked barely making it off the ground and off island. That misision took about 6 hours in real time and we played it from 10pm until 0400.
Every night for three days straight I ran that mission for different people. The mission included features such as : Roving general ambient zombies. Areas where there were zombie spawn points that if you got near them larger groups would appear. The ability to customize you appearance and clothes and equipment. Spawn points that appeared as we progressed across the island so if you dies you could at least be within a mile of the group and we could try and rv with you. The need to drink and eat or lose health and capability. The inability to scavenge houses for food, ammo weapons and equipment.   etc..
That's just one of the many ways we played Arma3. And the zombie mission we ran for three years straight, every year on a new island but picking up with the same characters. This gives you an idea:

I put together a short film of the 56th Stryker Brigade Combat team's recent NTC rotation. It occurs to me that w CMSF 2 coming out some might find it interesting. My son provided much of the helmet cam footage.. You can see the opfor makes liberal use of smoke for mounted movements..

The original schok-ta-tola minus the swastika can be had from various specialty German food distributors here in the US in the red tin. I ordered some not too long ago.

Wehrmacht casualties in Poland were more along the lines of 20k Kia/Mia and 30k wia.. Still immense for one month of operations. Certainly there are many interesting actions to explore at the CM level.

I always wanted to play this game in first person commander mode (anyone play Scourge of War Gettysburg using Headquarters in the Saddle mode?). The game could make a great Company commander simulator. Of course the single greatest thing you could do for multiplayer realism is make the game coop (Like SOW does) and then play it in realtime, so you have say a  two or three guys each running a platoon or what not in realtime, locked to their player character. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if CM did this I'd marry it!

Well probably not as intended, but as a guy who welcomed Russia's green men in Crimea, you really don't have much of a leg to stand on.  Sometime I'd love to buy you a beer and get your perspective on the overall LnL, but I can't say I respect your willingness/need to slam the current Ukrainian gov't when your chosen gov't is so over the top corrupt and is waging a war against a sovereign nation based on nothing more than it doesn't like that it's chosen select group of corrupt leaders got ridden out of town.

And no that farce of an election doesn't even come close to international standards, whether the situation in Crimea can be negotiated while under illegal occupation is not how these things are normally done.  Even in Iraq, armed US troops didn't sit in the room to make sure their puppet got elected.  Seems Putin wanted to be very sure how the "vote" went.

Unfortunately I think we have strayed a bit over the "no politics" line.

Actually if anything his argument is equally valid for the Poles redressing the issue of lands stolen from them by the Soviet Union, a return of Konigsberg to Germany and someone annexing Chechnya.  The corrupt Russian state simply shouldn't be allowed to hold onto those things someone else could put to much better use, so it's the moral imperative unmarked military personnel and purchased street thugs come solve that!

BTW lest anyone think these AI issues are limited to Combat Mission, anyone who's every spent time in, say the infantry, is well aware of what its like to have an observer with your platoon OR to be an observer going with another unit. It actually doesn't matter how well trained or elite the unit being observed. When you spend time looking at them or being looked at under scrutiny, you find flaws (Even if they are perceived flaws vs what you think should be happening) and go WTF? Of course the guys being observed go, "Tactics are like assholes, everybody has one"  That's before you takie into account that under various conditions humans are apt to not the right thing at the right times.

I do believe that these very small amounts of time that designers give for scenarios (this goes for lots of wargames as well) contributes to feeling you have to play in WEGO and to micromanage everything. Even in these platoon battles you get sometimes 30 minutes. I like to make my scenarios a little longer and play them in RealTime so it's not a click fest. Not every tactical battle every fought in the history of mankind is the last half hour of little round top where the fate of the nation is at stake.

Like I used to tell guys before rushing into a house to clear it: "Hey, you've got the whole rest of your life to get in there so do it right... "

The best way to play the AI is to forget the AI exists. Don't try to leverage AI quirks to your advantage, just play the situation like it was reality. One of the nice things about triggers in the game is they're often entirely invisible to the player. Unless its something obvious like being attacked as soon as you reach a crossroads. Usually the chain of events is more subtle than that. I'm of course talking properly made scenarios.

I prefer to think of it from my own perspective as a customer.  It's a feature I'd like to see.

I'm not demanding anything, and I'm sympathetic to a list of reasons it hasn't been done.  Still, I see no reason to drop the request.  Full battle playback would add a lot to the final product.  In fact, I think it would end up selling more copies of CM because you could introduce people to the game by showing them what it looks like in the end.  They wouldn't have to wade into the complexities of the control system for their first impression.

    That's all.

I would have a vertical full map height AI trigger "tripwire" way over on the east to cause the 2 platoons (all AI groups) to maybe go off hide. Then maybe a timer or maybe another trigger to start all AI groups moving eastward in the center.

Then 2 more AI enemy tripwires (1 to cover the northern option and 1 to cover the southern option). parallel to the first but each has half the map.

Northern half line gets tripped and we hook say A1 counterclockwise up to meet the north option. A1 trips a friendly AI trigger which tells A4,A6,to also swing up to meet that northern option in his left flank. Maybe one final AI tripwire if the enemy made it that deep to the west would tell A8and A10 to also cut north to hit the enemy. The other odd numbered groups would not be moving. Select their static posits to support the moving group.

In the southern option A2 is triggered to swing clockwise down to meet the southern option and trips a friendly AI trigger to tell A3,A5, to also swing down to the south and hit that southern attack in his right flank. Maybe one final AI tripwire if the enemy made it that deep to the west would tell A7and A9 to also cut south to hit the enemy. The other even numbered groups would not be moving. Select their static posits to support the moving group.

But it is just "Otto Maddox" the AI soldier....
