I would prefer CM:BG (Beyond Gleiwitz) = early war, 1939 - Barbarossa

Then CM:Hits (Holiday in the sun) - North Africa, Italy

CM:CS (Chop Suey) Pazific War, inclusive Post-WWII Korea (to have some change, islands are always the same)

CM:ME (Middle East) - Israel, 1947 - 1973

CM:RD (Red Dawn) - Hypothetical NATO vs Warshaw Pact

CM:GW (Great War) - World War 1

:D:D:D

If distant memory serves, I believe they were talking about next, desert (Med. theater) war, then early war (including Spanish Civil war?)

But a total engine rewrite might be on the agenda somewhere in there too. Gawd knows how long that's going to take.

I haven't heard anythying about new titles. If we're going for hot 3-D action how about

CMBB: Barbarella to Brittney

Going by what was speculated 2 years ago it would be the following

3 North Africa & Mediterranean (OK, I can't spell)

4 Early Years ( 1939 up)

BTS also stated they may do a CM:BO II at some point.I still vote for a Pacific version, but that seemed unlikely to happen based on comments in old threads.

The next thing is definitely the Engine re-write. After that should be the Med (including Crete, I believe) and the Early war (including the Winter War), but the order isn't set in stone yet, AFAIK. Not sure even BTS knows the order at this point. My guess would be the Med will be the first to show off the new engine. And hopefully they will be able to get back to CMBO and CMBB with the new engine after CM4.

What BTS has had to say on the subject recently:

It just makes sense that pushing forward the franchise with a new engine would result in it being an update of their largest potential theater audience.

While smaller theatres may have interest, in my opinion to justify the effort to release them as a separate game, they would need to be incorporated into an all encompassing 1939-1945 West Front game. The Spanish Civil War added would be fine, but even better would be to simulate the entire European conflict. Pacific War enthusiasts will no doubt be calling for attention to that arena, but I don't think the interest level in that area has changed from the previous statements I read on the topic.

This is just my opinion and it is probably worth as much as the effort I will be putting into the game, but that is what makes sense to me.

I predict that if a smaller theater iteration is released, it will be the side effort described earlier.

We'll just have to wait and see. Fortunately, there will be CM:BB to occupy our minds in the meantime.

Well personally I'd love to see North Africa and the Mediteranean (I can't spell either), come next in CM3. Right from Say, September 1940 when the Brits really got involved in the theatre, all the way up to the Capture of Rome in May/June 1944. Plus another bonus, there would be good reason to include the ANZACS (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps), Tobruk, the famed N.Z. Armoured engagements against Rommel. It'd be fun.

If the Early war was moddled I'd say go from the Spannish Civil War to Barbarossa. (But would the Balkans be covered in the North Africa game, hell they could actually be covered in CMBB, with the Russian advancement into the Balkans). Maybe the early war would finish say Battle of Britain?

Anyway the September 1939 - July 1940,I think won't be a "great" area to cover, and the Spanish Civil War would probably have to be included. But who knows what BTS and BFC will come up with. :D

It will also be called CMBB - 'Combat Mission: Beyond Buffy'.

I still plan on doing that 'Giles has a cup of tea' scenario.

Last I heard Hakko was getting excited about the new opportunities for Grog Porn that this new release would entail.

Hmmmm, Buffy...

They did say they would redo the first 2 games after they release the North Africa campaign and the Western Europe campaign from 1939 to the fall of France.

May be for the Pacific they can make a small version of the game. They could make it Guadalcanal only. If players want more then they them selfs would have to make up the other compaigns in the pacific. :D

{sigh} ... Hell I'd settle for the Spanish Militia! Never happen under BFC of course but it would be great.

Others have already mentioned most of the plans. The current plans as stated in the past and subject to change are:

After patching CMBB the next project is the engine rewrite (CMII) for the next series of games. At some point during the rewrite work will begin on CM3 covering the Meditterranean (North Africa/Italy/Greece/Crete/Yugoslavia ? 1940-1945). So CM3 will be based on the engine rewrite (CMII) and it may take over two years after CMBB is patched before CM3 will be released. After that will be CM4 Early War (Poland, Winter War, West Front 1940, Norway and maybe even Spanish Civil War).

After CM4 there will probably be another engine rewrite and the game will go back to the Western Front 1944-45 and again revisit the Eastern Front 1941-1945 (most likely separate games). No plans have been mentioned for Napoleonic, ACW, Thirty Years War, Age of Rifles, Modern, Korea 1950-1953, Vietnam, Pacific Theater or an all encompassing game of 1939-1945.

The North African desert battles seem like they would be hard to simulate well in CM. Infantry inching their way through huge minefields, Sappers destroying fortifications, columns of tanks trying to outmaneuvre each other at max engagement ranges, dust, smoke and whirling sand as major battlefield factors. All of these things and more about the theatre just seem outside of what CM can do well, which I suppose is why the theatre has been left until after the engine rewrite.

Speculating about the rewrite is probably hopeless, but I'd bet that higher level control of groups of AFVs will almost certainly be in it, since you just can't leave tank maneuvers up to singly plotted moves where tanks don't respond to what's happening with their friends. The schizophrenia we already see between movement orders and tacAI targetting might be exaggerated. A new level of tac AI, where tanks are interacting in real time to carry out a group order would seem almost necessary for a 1 minute/turn we-go system to work in that sort of country. It's just a guess though.

So you can look for CM3 in Q1 2005

March 2005 if you are lucky.

Logic:

Dec 02 before they say "No More Patches to CMBB" (your on your own now!)

+ 2 years (projected developement cycle of CM3)

= Dec 04

+ 3-6 months extra development time to adapt to Mac OS XII and Windoze 2006! (OR hire more programers and artists!)

Release of CM3 (whatever it is) Jan-June 2005!

Happy now?
