Keeping certain troops upright (for spotting)

I think my head is about to explode from all the options! Hope you can keep yours through all this. Really looking great. Thanks for all the work you put into this, Juju. - Chris -

Not a problem; I wanted to throw that out there to see what others thought. It was always similar (a bit more brown than Bailout), but I have a tough time seeing the difference in your pic. Any chance of giving it a bit of a color tweak? Thanks. One other suggestion I thought of was to differentiate the defensive icons by shape as well as color. Here are a number of variations, including one of my own. I think I like the CMBN one myself, but would prefer the yellow box be more intense. - Chris -

Verrry nice looking! The color choices and shading on the command buttons is sweet. The Pause button does seem a bit close in color to the Bailout button, however. One idea I had was for the bonuses: graphical lines instead of readable numbers. This works well at a glance, I think: - Chris -
Looking for some icon editing advice
Wolfe replied to A Canadian Cat's topic in CM Normandy Maps and Mods
AFAIK, they're all 32-bit BMPs, so save as that. I just use the default settings in GIMP (from the image that I loaded). If you start as a new file, you may have to fill the background with transparency (rather than background color) under advanced options. It's easiest to start with an existing file and work from there. Even if you're going to erase everything that file has, the settings will still be consistent. - Chris -

I use GIMP. I tried Paint.net, but I think I couldn't figure out how to play with transparency, like you said. To affect opacity in Gimp, select Colors, Levels, choose Alpha from Channel drop-down, then drag the Output Levels arrow and adjust to your liking. - Chris -
Very nice! Thanks for this. Pg.5 under Default Keyboard Input says Backspace cancels a fire order, but it's Delete. Backspace cancels move. Some info on blowing holes in bocage might be useful (with pics): Blowing Tank-sized holes in Bocage Executive Summary: * For N-S/E-W bocage with an existing opening, Blast Through is the best option. If there is no opening, Blast Along. * For diagonally oriented bocage, always Blast Along. - Chris

Just an update. I finally figured this one out. It was a custom strings.txt file created for 1.0 that was interfering. Erasing it did the trick. - Chris

I just checked out the US Jeeps in the game, and their silhouettes look fine to me. Maybe your download got mangled somehow? Maybe try re-downloading? - Chris -
Is it just me or do all armor/vehicle penetrations now say "RICOCHET INTO"? I have the 1.01 patch installed. - Chris

That's a good point; you wouldn't want the icon to be too high, but I still think it can be raised some without losing its approximate location. The dense trees and especially bocage in CMBN provide real visual obstacles from seeing it at all in many cases, unlike on most CMSF maps. - Chris

If you're saying you tried to update it again with a new title, that didn't work for me, either. My Bad Submission - Chris -

Did you try to use the Update Submission option? I had this problem with updating my Shimmer Terrain mod. The Repository accepted the title with an apostrophe initially, but didn't seem to like when I tried to use the Update feature with an apostrophe in the title, even when using the exact same filename. An odd bug. I just did a new submission, which worked fine. - Chris -
Not sure if it would be easy or not, but I'd love to see a few more floating icons for different unit types. Ammo bearers and XO teams both use the standard infantry icon, making them difficult to pick out. It'd also be nice if there were a separate icon for Airborne infantry. Any chance for these? Thanks. BTW, is it just me or do the Lost Contact icons float just above the ground for some reason? They can often be difficult to spot in bocage terrain. And the tank vs. infantry Lost Contact icons have been requested before, so I won't mention it again. Okay ... maybe I will. - Chris

Thanks, guys. I'm still trying to get used to them myself! Does seem a bit odd after playing CMSF and CMBN for so many months. Unfortunately there's no dedicated icon for ammo bearers, nor for the attached XO HQs. I might try a request on the main board; maybe it's something easy BFC can add? I'd also like to see a separate one for Airborne troops. I originally tried just a full-sized star and cross, but didn't care for them (and others had already done that mod). The detail at the bottom didn't seem too intrusive, and I wanted something besides just color to differentiate the icons. I just wish the Lost Contact icons floated higher above the terrain. For some reason most of them seem to hover just above the ground. - Chris

In order to try to differentiate between different types of units, I tried changing the shapes and sizes of the floating icons to try to make it easier to pick units out in a crowded pack. I "borrowed" many ideas from various other mods (Bil Hardenberger, Billy SP, DeutschRitter, Niessuh, Sergei, and stikkypixie) and mashed 'em together for this one. * HQ and FO units are denoted by larger circles. * Infantry is smaller vertical rectangles. * Tanks are large horizontal rectangles; vehicles are smaller rectangles. * Support units (MGs, mortars, AT guns, snipers) are hexagons. * Defenses (trenches, mines, etc.) are semi-transparent diamonds. * The two lost contact icons are full-sized squares retaining the white question mark, but adding a star (US) or balkenkreuz (Ger) to its base. It's temporarily hosted on my site. I'm still testing it. If you have any suggestions or see any bugs, let me know. Smeel, does your 'display size.txt' file now say "0 0 60"? If so, its looks like the game defaults to its minimum 1024x768 if no width/height are specified, but a refresh rate is listed. Delete the 'display size.txt' file and restart the game a couple times so that it gets re-created. I got this oddity while trying to see what 1366x768 would look like on my 1680x1050 display by editing the txt file. I never got it to work at that rez, but when I tried to reset the game to my "Desktop" default using the in-game menu, it reset the height and width both to 0's, but left the refresh, and I ended up in 1024x768 permanently until I removed the 'display size.txt' file. - Chris

Thanks, Vinnart. Yeah, I was hoping to avoid bothering BFC with another upload, but a fresh file looks to be the best option now. Hopefully the new one will be up within a few days. - Chris -
