Ultima Underworld(set the standard for 3D graphics, story, and immersion)

Master of Orion

Warcraft(the first one)

Privateer

Mindrover(if you haven't heard of it, you need to check it out http://www.mindrover.com )

I was thinking of starting a seperate thread, but it'll work here.

CMBO is now the longest lived computer game ever to stay on my computer.

Before this, the previous records went to:

1. The Lost Admiral (played for months and months. Old classic by QQP, not many people have heard of it I bet)

2. Civilization I (played for months)

3. X-Com, UFO Defense (played it twice)

Empire Deluxe and Perfect General (not in that order) would be my whole "short" list.

Perfect General was ahead of its time... a real classic in many ways.

P.S when you spoke of Ambush Compassion, were you talking about Computer Ambush from SSI? That was one of my brother's all time favorites!

The very one... That was the game that sucked me in... that and Cosmic Balance and Ultima. Started my Wargaming career with Sniper. When I saw Ambush it was love at first sight "how could things get any better?"

Are you kidding, I still play it, classic basic wargame. It is the only game I played cross platform. Had it on the Amiga, then when I bowed to reality and transferred to PC, went out and found a PC copy of Empire, later upgraded to Empire Deluxe and tried Empire II (not nearly as good). Also loved the original Falcon on Amiga (actually finished the campaign on the hardest level) and 3.0 on PC. Haven't seen Tie Fighter mentioned too often, I consider it a top ten classic, regardless of genre. I went out and bought the win95 copy when the original wouldn't run after an upgrade.

Well, I just got to ad my 2 cents worth. And to date myself, the first game I played that was a true obsession was on the Atari 2600:

Breakout, and the sequel,

Super Breakout

Then came the Atari computer:

Silent Service

Castle Wolfenstien

Then came the best game platform of the time, the Commodore 64:

Pool Of Radiance

Airborne Ranger

Leader Board Golf

PC:

Doom and Doom II

X-Com 1

Civ 1

Panzer General

Indy Car Racing 2

Warcraft II

Sim City 2000/3000

Daggerfall

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Steel Panthers

Starcraft

Nascar 3

Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord

And yes, time will tell how high CM will climb on this list, but I doubt any game will beat the #1 of all time. I agree with Mord, and so many others. No game has been a greater obsession than Doom and Doom II. God, even if there was only the 1 episode shareware game ever produced, it would have been the greatest game! It was the finest game experience I have ever had, those 6 or 8 months of total immersion in a terrifying and alien world. I still can hear that mancubus bubbling growl break the silence.

Though it's time may have passed...

In response to the original question of "classic" games...

Civilization I & II (what needs to be said)

Doom (not the original but the son)

SimCity Mac(I was addicted for months)

Games I loved!

Wolfenstein 3D (shareware, bought the full version, the Father of all FPS's)

Harpoon (does anyone remember or like this one?)

Outlaws (First FPS to have a "Zoomed" sniper weapon)

Dark Forces (what has happended to LucasArts, use to produce consistenly good titles)

Command & Conquer (my first head to head game ever played, kick started the RTS craze)

Half-Life (I debated about this being a classic, love the 1st person game, played TFC for 6+ months, have been playing Counter-Strike for 6+ months, best gaming dollar I ever spent, nothing comes close!)

Close Combat II - possible classic as well

ELITE must be the definite, all-time favorite game. Doesn't pictures like this take you right back? Those were the days!

Hi all

well being a relative PC newbie (1998 vintage) I have not heard of most of the titles named in this thread nor indeed many of the 'platforms/machines' they were designed for ! smile.gif

But my own (exculsively PC) list of favs are

Eastern Front (actually reason I bought a PC)

Western Front

and surprise surprise : Rising Sun

Steel Panthers

Over The Reich

Age Of Empires

Close Combat : A Bridge Too Far

Panzer Commander

Caesar III

SM Gettysburg

All the Battleground Titles

and Blade Runner (played this one to death)

I can't believe I didn't see Kampfgruppe mentioned up there! (or did I miss it? *grin*)

I'm back with Compassion's list... Do I remember Computer Ambush? I still play it occasionally! In fact CM is very reminiscent of CA when you've stacked your orders. Padooka, go get 'em!

coambush.gif

Or... one of my all time faves was Operation Market Garden for the IIe.

Although a bit off the subject matter, my absolute alltime favorite was Fighter Command for the IIe...

Note: all of the above are still playable using A2 emulators which are available for PC's & Macs

Wow! There are some of the ancient ones on this tread (including yours truly!)

My Most Memorable:

Asteroids - (in the arcade) I won't tell you how many quarters went into those machines, but I met my best friend and first love there and she's still my best friend after 20+ years and the only person that I know that scored over 300,000 on Asteroids II)

The First three in the X-COM series - Who can forget the eerie music and shock the very first time you came up on a UFO in X-COM? I still remember that to this day.

Pacific Air War

Falcon 4.0

Steel Panthers I and II

Jane's F-15 Strike Eagle

Harpoon (Amiga)

Hero's of Might and Magic II and III

Baldur's Gate I and II

Master of Orion II

Pool of Radiance (Amiga)

Rogue Spear

Homeworld and Homeworld Cataclysm

Empire (Amiga)

Civ I and II

I can believe no one has mentioned the classic: M1 Tank Platoon by Microprose. That was my very first PC game back in '91. (Required a 5.25" floppy to be in the drive at boot-up.) Played that thing silly. Loved brewing up hull down BMPs along crest lines.

Also in the same lines, Gunship 2000. No, not the new one that is a piece of ****, but the one that came out in '92 I bvelieve. It had a huge database of Warsaw Pact vehicles. Shame 3D accelaration wasn't around then to supply textures on the 3D models.

Also Stealth Fighter 2.0 was good. Again, one of those first 3D polygon flight sims that had bare textures. But it played great though. Loved flying over Baghdad and taking out their Air Defense Building with a LGB.

Red Baron, Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe were good also, liked AotP better though. Didn't understand the gun fire convergement in AOE. What I kept saying about those games though was, "How many times can you shoot down the same Ace???" biggrin.gif
