A (rather dry) treatise on the subject is the  Russia book 'The Offensive (a Soviet view)' by A.A. Sidorenko, published in Moscow in 1970 with a translated version put out by the US Government Printing Office, perhaps in 78(?). 228 pages with chapter titles like "Employment of nuclear weapons and destruction of the enemy by fire", "Defeat of a defending enemy and exploitation of success" and "Forcing water barriers".
Apparently this Colonel Sidoereko was a prolific author of tactical treatises. The book may have been based on his doctoral thesis which earned him a 'doctor of military science'  PhD (equivalent). Though too broad to be applied directly to CM engagements it'll give you a backstory on what the Soviets are attempting and why they're attempting it. If you Google it you'll get lots of hits including some free pdf book downloads.

Not books but a lot of games in the 80's were based on the Cold War gone hot
Red Storm Rising (C64), Project Stealth Fighter (C64), Red Lightning (Amiga), The Third World War "Battle for Germany" (Boardgame).
Add to that Judge Dredd, the future after the third world war.
Yup, that's my childhood growing up in the 80's listening to Mötley Crüe, Helloween, Doro Pesch, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, etc. playing games and reading Tom Clancy

If you are looking for some generally informative information I would highly recommend this blog: https://coldwargamer.blogspot.com/
There is mountains of great material to sift through there, plus some nice model pictures here and there if you're into that sort of thing.
For more fun reading, "The War That Never Was" by Michael Palmer is great. "Northern Fury: H-Hour" by Bart Gauvin and Joel Radunzel is also great and is based off of a computer wargame (Command: Modern Operations). "Red Army" by Ralph Peters is the Russian version of Team Yankee, written from the perspective of the Russians, and it also quite good. And then there is "The Defense of Hill 781" by James B. McDonough for those looking to get an NTC perspective.
I'm certainly missing some more that are good, but everything mentioned here in this thread is certainly worth your time.

Excepting the 'magic bullet' depleted uranium rounds for M60A3 and M1 Abrams which can get penetrations at 2k, sabot sucks. APDS is all but useless. Titanium core M735 APFSDS becomes increasingly useful the shorter the range. None of this stuff you want a hit squarely to a Soviet MBT's turret front because its likely to just scratch the paint. Its (almost) like WWII American guns versus Panthers all over again.

I've spent ages trying to find the full version of that Fighting in Woods video! Thank you very much!

There was another British Army one describing an encounter battle floating around, but it seems to have been taken down.

    Here's another:

An irony of very long range hull-down shooting is the incoming rounds are at the end of their trajectory parabola and are very nearly doing plunging attacks. I notice an increased number of 'turret top hit' messages when engaging at extended ranges. Especially if you're firing HEAT, HE or squash head.

A low velocity is an advantage for weapons like AT-3 and Dragon. Because they both need to be manually steered all the way to the target. Too high a velocity and if the flight path gets away from you there's no correcting it. If a Dragon gunner is inadequately trained or using the wrong firing stance the (real world) hit probability drops to something like 20%. Its an unforgiving weapon.

Also a great album. "Eighties" is probably the best anthem of the decade in general and is also a great song for this game.

I have uploaded 69 of Kieme's mods to Google Drive, as well as a few others by Vein, BTR and Bil Hardenberger.  Files will be taken down at request of author(s).  Files were made JSGME ready (they were placed inside z, inside data, inside a folder with the same name) and then zipped.

It is like having a Naval engagement without torpedoes. That's how I see the ATGM its attack needs to be timed when the tanks are engaged.  A fast vehicle which can deal a fatal blow to any MBT in the world.

I was impressed by the opening pages of Hackett's novel too, with the cavalry Sheridans fending off the Red Horde(TM). 😁
Anyway, if a US Airborne/VDV module is in the works, we might get the M551 someday (and the ASU-85!).

If any Beta testers wants to share some tank porn of this....uh....dynamic duo in action, please do.  It was a poster boy for the Goldwater-Nichols Act and I've been morbidly curious about it since the opening chapter to Gen. Hackett's future history novel 'The Third World War.'

The 1500m figure comes from an average designed to measure combat LOS in Germany. It may have been specific to the American sector, which is much more wooded and hilly than Northern Germany. Anyways, the point is, it is a combat average.
    Nice pictures though!

That's the penalty for being about 1/3rd taller than your opponent.   I  have an M60A3 in my home town acting as a rusting 'gate guardian' behind the local post office. That tank is a BIG mutha! Spotting it is like spotting Chartres cathedral in the distance as you drive into town.

Sure, why not! One of the great things about CMCW is that if you want to, you can create your own backstory to inform the context of your scenarios. Its all what you make of it.

IIRC, islamist guerrilla manage to catastrophically disrupt Soviet oil production with a well executed (and lucky) attack on a refinery complex. Moscow realizes that the only way to save USSR from a collapse due to the lack of oil is to invade the Persian Gulf. And, since they fear that such an action might trigger NATO military intervention... they resolve to go to war with NATO just to avoid that! 😂 Basically, being driven to suicide by the fear of dying. 🤨
Probably the lamest reason for a fictional WW3 ever, but at the time I liked the book. Honestly, I bought it only for the action, non for the plot.

Doesn't seem like the T-64s were turned out or hull down. There's a lot of factors here so it's hard to really tell the spotting, but the T-64s shouldn't really be at a disadvantage with optics AFAIK. Being turned out, sitting in position, crew quality, and information sharing probably favored the M60s shooting first. Once they shot the T-64s didn't really have anywhere to go but slowly backwards, so they kept getting hit. The T-64 is a good tank, but I don't think the outcome seemed that strange in this situation.

Soooo...Brezhnev doesn't just wake up one morning, look out his window and say '#$%@ it!  Onward to the Rhine!' sending the Red Army marching 24 hours later? Our alternate history back story is taking shape! The 1979 timeline could be tied to the Carter grain embargo while the 1982 variant might have something to do with the deployment of theatre nuclear forces.
    Totally.  Thanks for the input.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that mobilization categories will not be reflected (per se) in the force selector, simply because the game (at present) is designed to represent combat between first line Soviet and US forces in Germany in the first phase of a hypothetical WW3.
So, all of the units in the GSVG should be classified in what you'd call "A" category.

'Partially demobilized' wouldn't be a thing in a full-up war of Russia's choosing. The West would've got fair warning that something was up simply from the Soviet army hoarding batteries, Diesel oil and medical supplies months beforehand.
