Genuinely curious given that he died in a car accident which doesn't seem too related to any amounts of rudeness or honesty

Have you ever considered reading a book that wasn't written by a contrarian journalist out to prove a point?

Why not read Richard Overys book given that it's infinitely more related to the subject and written by an actual historian with a long history of writing well-respected books on the topic.

RINALDI, well stated.  That danfrodo guy really just doesn't know what's he's talking about
Seriously, I now agree w you on this subject -- I was thinking too small.

The main issue I take with the criticism regarding Churchill's decision to support the Greeks in their struggle is that they are all purely military criticisms. Churchill wasn't a purely military leader (indeed, constitutionally, he wouldn't be much of one at all in any other circumstance other than total war).
It was an excellent political decision, and arguably a morally sublime one. The United Kingdom was functionally alone at that point, Western Betrayal sentiments were just beginning to really solidify in Poland and Czechoslovakia, and there had hitherto appeared to be no way to get at the Germans on the continent since being bounced off it in 1940. Intervention in Greece showed that the UK was still very much willing to fight against the odds. Crucially, it demonstrated that it wouldn't further abandon anyone who sought to resist Fascism and Nazism. The decision may have made Wavell despair but it certainly would have been a trumpet blast to occupied Europe, and the Americans, that the British were willing to not only defend themselves on their island, but to seek active decision with the enemy. In short, there were political considerations, very good ones.
Goodness knows there's a lot to criticise Churchill for, the man was far from a saint. I just don't think most of the grounds for criticism are related to his leadership during WWII. From a top-down perspective he did precisely what was necessary to carry his country through the conflict, and it must be said, quite a few other governments-in-exile. Any further analysis is nitpicking best left to academics with more letters behind their names than myself.

We'd never have won the war if we just sat back in blighty flicking peanuts at the hun - as a man who'd been to war, old Winnie understood this. And given that everyone else at the time seemed to be folding like a cheap deck chair, what else could he have done?

Someone should have bought Mad Addy a book about 1812. And then smacked 'im around the 'ead with it repeatedly. Not, to knock any sense into 'im, but just for the fun of it. As the old saying goes, "Never trust a man who goes into a beer hall and drinks mineral water".

Hard to argue with the analysis, in this case. The German's propensity to launch local counterattacks quite literally won us battles, or won us larger successes in what would otherwise have been a rebuff. Indeed, we began to plan around the certainty of a counteroffensive: 2nd Alamein, Epsom, Totalize, Tractable are all good examples.
Totalize would have been a success regardless, in my view, of the disappointing 2nd phase but the Germans just had to lay on the alter for us their last heavy armour reserve in a wild counterattack against strong positions, enhancing the scale of the victory and denuding themselves of any type of effective reserve in follow-on set pieces.
In fact, off the top of my head, the only time the Germans didn't predictably dash themselves to pieces in a counteroffensive was during Crusader, and that's largely because they were so taken by the deception they refused to believe armour was en masse in their rear, we got impatient, and abandoned excellent BPs. We make such a pfaff about how flexible and dynamic the Wehrmacht was in Europe operationally, but in all reality they were predictable, and a predictable foe is invariably inflexible.

SergeantSqook reacted to Bozowans in Rare hit by a double ricochet
I saw something very rare so I made a short video of it. A bullet ricocheted twice and then still ended up hitting someone. A bullet fired from a Thompson ricocheted off a building, then ricocheted again off the back of a Panther turret 65 meters away, then flew high up in the air and then plunged down right into the backside of a tank radio operator hiding in the bottom of a ditch another 30 meters away. It gave him a light wound. What are the chances of that?
I included the view from the US soldier with the Thompson as well. If only he knew he ended up accidentally hitting someone completely out of view and way off to the left of what he was aiming at. Seems he was probably killed shortly after firing though.

Posted in the general forum since this kind of thing is not unique to CMBN. Being able to track individual bullets and see where they go is one of the interesting things about CM. Anyone else see rare stuff like this? Could be any CM game. It's always amusing seeing things like a stray bullet falling out of the sky and landing at someone's feet from a completely unrelated firefight on the other side of the map 1000 meters away or whatever.

I played these games since Beyond Overlord and you find out what works and what doesn't. Hardcover, cover, and concealment is generic. Let the AI decide 90 % of the time eyeballing gives you an idea so does plotting LOS from way points. My point, take a house or building for example. Just one room houses, it gives some protection. Concealment it depends how the algorithm calculates it. A crack or elite enemy will spot you somewhere in the bushes. Play a quick battel on Hotseat against yourself setting, scenario author setting. Test you grazing and plunging fire from the weapons platoon as well as your small arms. Effectiveness of artillery there are no secrets everyone has the same tools.

For what it is worth. Plot a waypoint with a move command highlight and plot a fire near a position you wish to move a scout to.

From your first waypoint plot a second waypoint using the hunt command to the position you plotted your LOS to.

Now drag your first waypoint near the waypoint of your hunt command.

Move the unit you wish to use and plot a route as secure as possible.

Warning some games become boring using this method.

There are some minor differences with RT and CW compared to the others, the pause/play button on the UI now lights up either symbol depending on whether the game is paused or playing, tabbing out seems to work a little different from the others (my example being that if I hit end turn on one of the "older" games, when I tab back in it'll be paused at the start of the turn replay, but on RT or CW, it will have started playing the turn out) and the needing to run as admin to overwrite saves are what I've noticed so far.

I expect the former is minor enough to not be worth a patch for the other games and the latter probably unintended quirks of some update.

This took far longer than I would have liked to finish up, but I think it should be an entertaining read. Was certainly entertaining to play after the first 15 turns or so, at least - read it here: https://rinaldiaars.blogspot.com/2021/07/cmbn-aar-cut-off-at-kovering-what-if.html

IIRC there were some last minute tweaks to various units based on research. To avoid ‘breaking’ scenarios authors had the choice to retain the older TOE or update. Some did but others would take too long to repurchase and redeploy (not counting reassigning AI groups, unit objs etc).

@akd who is a ToE whizz would be better able to comment for sure

George is correct.  The smaller squad is much closer to historical reality for 1944-45, but updating scenario TO&E requires deletion and repurchase of the unit to see the changes.
