Several days ago in Kyiv were burials of recon from 93rd brigade, he was in tank-hunter team, armed with Javelin, but Russian tank could spot it first... Javelin is good stuff, but it requires enough many time to lock on target, theese seconds can cost a life..

UKR troops reportedly continue resistance in Lyman, but in SE part of the town, there is a clashes reported around railway station and 5-storey residentilal areas. The video which I posted above with retreating UKR soldiers was geolocated as northern part of Lyman
On this picture the route of BTR from this video - they drive to SE part

Approximate defense line of UKR trops in Lyman several hours ago.

As is my wont, I periodically browse various pro-Russian feeds for notable items that may not be total fabrication.  My purpose here is neither alarmism nor defeatism. Simply put,  complacency costs lives.
Nobody expects everything to go UA's way at all times in a high intensity war, of course, but I do continue to worry about their ability to mount mechanised offensive operations (as opposed to infantry attacks). And I've been eyeing that Zaporizhe front too.
Newsweek (not pro-Russian AFAIK although I haven't read it for news since, like, high school), 14 May:
    https://www.newsweek.com/russian-troops-destroy-2-battalions-ukrainian-tanks-mid-preparation-1708306
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the attack took place near the village of Vishnevoe in the south-eastern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
The MoD said Russian troops destroyed two mechanized battalions of tanks and infantry fighting vehicles with artillery fire and drones as well as incoming fire from tanks and armored vehicles.
The Russian MoD said as a result of the attack, they destroyed 26 Ukrainian tanks, 12 infantry fighting vehicles, and killed around 100 soldiers.
The Russian military also said that the attack was launched due to the work of reconnaissance troops using drones.
(Did they mention enough times that this is Russians claiming this, lol?)
...Maybe battalions aren't the size they used to be or sumfink?  But while this isn't exactly Kasserine Pass, still, it's a black eye for one UA battalion, even if inflated (e.g. all hits claimed as kills).
Edit:  ooh, even better, video from the Sun! Where's the Page Three Girl?

So ... I was thinking the other day ... if only there was a war game that had a lot of the equipment and forces used in the current conflict/special military operation in which you could build maps and stuff ...
Map size 4,800m wide by 3,664m deep
    Topo overlay

    Satellite overlay

    CM overhead ...

    Where it is in Ukraine
    Chervone Overlay.kmz
    A couple of comparisons ...

The Combat Mission Black Sea map file ...
    Chervone.btt
Just a map folks so no you can't do a QB on it or play it unless you actually click the editor button and add forces and plans etc.  Will this be a scenario one day ... hopefully.
I was prompted to make it because it looked like a BTG or two were going to roll south towards Barvinkove having rolled into Velyka Komyshuvakha towards the end of April and I though it would be worth seeing how it looked in Combat Mission and whether a scenario or two could be built around it - there's definitely meat there for sure so hopefully I can put something together.  If I do so it will be the subject of a separate thread.

    Quick recap in ISW maps:
Really striking how fast the area NW of Kyiv changed once the Russians hit the tipping point.

TD is now basically sharing a lot of the same responsibility as an army itself, incl counter-offensives - so a reason may be that a hardcore, experienced army guy is much more fit for this job now that TD's role has changed and it's not a supporting, guerilla warfare unit anymore.

Yah I saw the exhaust plume also. I was wondering why the drone kept dropping ordnance, then the damn thing moved! Brave driver. For about 3 meters. Then he was just part of nature.
The guy who runs off from the left side of the tank rus up into the woods, around a tree and finally collapses.
Was the other guy under the tank?

More footage of the river crossing, with artillery damaging or destroying a boat of some sort interacting with a pontoon:

Pions worked very good, firing from position in 5 km from my house to Hostomel airfield (33 km by the map). Alas, their shell hit hangar with An-225 Mriya, destroying it, when dozens of Russian VDV vehicles gathered around it for refueling (

Having heard on the BBC (who just this morning got around to the famous bridging fiasco as breaking news) about how Russia is threatening to encircle Sievierodonetsk, I decided to summarise how the Russian 'threatening to encircle' reports have changed over the war so far:

You have to remember that the reports state they had at least a company with armored vehicles on the far bank of the river. I'm sure the subsequent bridging attempts were an attempt to either reinforce them or get them back across the river. I'm sure not all Russian commanders are heartless bastards who would leave a whole company to die.
And don't forget it took almost 3 days to finish the fight. Not like they tried doing this all under constant artillery fire and were wiped out in a couple of hours. Maybe they had been conducting effective counter battery and felt there was still an opportunity to complete the bridges, amateur attempts aside. The engineer mentions aviation having to come in to destroy the second bridge. Not everything is an example of incompetence, sometimes we have to do dangerous things to gain a tactical advantage (ie, the 82nd crossing the Waal river in canvas boats in broad daylight to capture the Nijmegen Bridge).
