  1. If I'm not mistaken LCD screens are basically made by a few manufacturers and only the label that' stuck on it is different. Its taken so long to get components I just went ahead and cancelled everything and shopped around some more. I'm not in a rush. I was able to find a system using a RTX3080 card and paid $100 less. I am going to have to wait until July to get the system though as the graphics card is pre-ordered. I'm also shopping around for monitors to see if I can snag a deal. One thing I do know is anything over 34 inches running over what I'm currently running 2560x1080 is going to be pushing a lot of pixels. I can't play first person shooters as I get dizzy. Flight sim 2020 is the real killer app I have. So long as I get 30FPS I should be fine.
  2. No argument from me on this one. I never owned one and don't plan on it. My sister bought an electric car and the batteries died after 100,000 miles. The cost to replace was astronomical. She went back to a non electric vehicle after that. I also think its now coming to light that Elon Musk has been overselling and exaggerating when it comes to his vehicles. Getting back to monitors. I may be getting the 49 monitor that runs at 3480x1080P that runs at 144hz or the 5120 x 1440 model that runs at 240 Hz. Have to wait to hear back. As for the size, from what I've seen its going to depend on what you do as well as the game itself. For Flight Sim 2020 its going to be an experience. Rome Total War should also be an experience. Some games don't scale well. Just going to have to see... You can also run multiple screens at once on an 49 monitor. Its really the equivalent of 3 monitors. Depending on what you do its going to require a powerful system. I'm currently running a I7-6700K at 4.00GHz with 32 gigs of memory and a RTX2080. My new machine will be an AMD 5950X, 32 gigs of memory and a RTX 3070. I would have paid $400 more for the 3080 if they were in stock. I was not going to pay $1800 more for the 3090 which was available or $800 more for the AMD RX 6900 XT. The 16 cores on the AMD should help with multitasking and the multiple screens. I'm expecting FS 2020 to be the frame rate killer app. The small text in games like Combat Mission is a minor concern. If worse comes to worse I'll just play on my laptop and current 32 monitor. I could also just try playing on one of the multiple screens or down size the resolution. I'll have to play around and see if it will be possible to keep the monitor at highest resolution and open a separate screen to play Combat Mission at a lower resolution. I'm hoping that in a year or so all this craziness around GPUs will subside. I may be willing to try the monstrosity that is the RTX 3090.
  3. I have small hand carry portable batteries and they are mainly for emergency use. So long as your expectations are realistic and you understand the strengths and weaknesses on them you'll be fine. Same with the solar panels to recharge them. I'm also satisfied with the AAA, AA, C, D and 9V rechargeable batteries and solar recharging system. Once again taking the time to understand the strength and weaknesses is key. Also its good to remember the one is done two is one theory. Waiting for solid state batteries in fine in theory. However I've already experienced power outages and if something big happens and you're without any power for an extended period of time I doubt you'll be saying I'm glad I waited for solid state technology...
  4. I already use a LG 32 inch monitor running at 2560x1080 and love it. Can't wait to get my new monitor.
  5. There is a global shortage of many items, not just microchips. Basic materials like copper and lumber are seeing shortages, increased demand and price spikes. Many other basic materials used in the manufacture of products are increasing in price. I ordered a new gaming workstation and the new 3080 graphic cards were not available so I had to get a 3070 and will be waiting 3-4 weeks. I also bought a gaming laptop. The ones with the latest AMD processor were sold out. While some models are in short supply and being grabbed fast the high end gaming laptop sector seems ok for now...you may not get exactly what you want however. I think another factor is many made huge money in crypto currency and being technically oriented many are using gains to buy up electronics. I don't have a crystal ball and don't know the future. One of my hobbies is investing and I've been doing it for a couple decades. If you follow the economic news there is a lot of chatter about shortages, inflation, supply chain disruptions and other looming issues. We are also on the cusp of a huge global economic boom where demand for everything is going to explode. I recently retired. I was a security specialist in the IT sector. While I have no special insight or knowledge, I've been buying and testing out portable solar panels and rechargeable portable batteries (240-1000watts). The power grid in the country was designed and built in the 50's. Its way overdue for replacement and overhaul. The Solarwinds and recent cyber attack on the pipeline on the East Coast is what many believe to be just the tip of the iceburg. I've already experienced periods of power outages due to fires and system overload. Texas experienced a massive power outage due to weather. Reliable electricity on demand is something I no longer take for granted. Running a high end gaming laptop off solar rechargeable batteries is practical. The larger desktops with high end graphic cards and other power hungry components is doable on the larger wattage rechargeable batteries, but IMO you're better off sticking to the laptop. Some of the newer gaming laptops while not as powerful as desktops are close in performance and many weigh 4-5 pounds. (However the power brick weighs almost as much as the laptop!) I'm hearing July as the target date for when the run and shortage on computer will end, but in today's rapidly changing environment I wouldn't count on it and reliable always on demand electricity? I have opinions about that, but leave it at that.
  6. Yeah its 5120 x 1440 if I understand correctly. In any case its no longer available. Monitors, GPUs are in short supply and sold out as quickly as they appear. I ended up getting the GHG90 that runs 3840x1080P at 144Hz
  7. I'm getting a Samsung - G97T Series LC49G97TSSNXDC 49" Class 1000R Curved Gaming Monitor - Black and will be running programs in 4K will this and other Combat Mission titles function properly and look good?
  8. I'm going to assume that some units have/use thermal sights. If so are the degraded under certain conditions such as dawn or in fog when the thermal layer is inverted?
  9. I played Going for a Swim and was going to mention this, but being so new to release I didn't want to say anything. My half-tracks were ambushed and targeted and I was surprised to see the gunners still alive. Before they would have been toast. I also think I see better textures and I could swear the infantry animations are better, but I haven't play enough or maybe I'm just imagining it.
  10. Not sure where this would go in current threads. I was pursuing the internet and came across some information that the US Military has spent a considerable sum on training and preparing for war underground. Kinda surprised me. The rationale is this-drones swarms will make warfare above the ground highly risky in the future and thus its projected that much future combat will be conducted underground. Our adversaries have also seen what happens when US airpower is applied and they too have come to the conclusion that going underground is the way to go. Additionally the world is becoming more urbanized and sewers and other underground terrain will be used and fought over. DARPA sent a request over twitter for proposals that related to underground warfare. It was picked up and combined with the recent creation of Space Force some started to put out rumors it was to fight aliens! I would assume that China has constructed elaborate underground facilities in the islands they are occupying. Taiwan probably also has a maze of underground tunnels and facilities. The terrain definitely is conductive to that and they have concluded that going asymmetric against China should they invade is the way to go. That brings me to the Ukraine. We see lots of tanks and other above ground equipment and trenches. It would make sense to me if they haven't taken the time since the last flare up to extensively borough underground. Against the Russian artillery, air power and tanks it would not only provide protection, but opens up opportunities to go asymmetric and in big way. Small groups of tank hunting teams suddenly appearing and shooting off Javelins at Russian tanks would be a serious hindrance. Too bad Black Sea doesn't model below the surface warfare. That would be interesting.
  11. I'm hearing much of the current situation comes down to resources-specifically water. Water usage has been rationed to 3 hours 2 times in parts of the Crimea a day and recently has been cut back more. Russia is accusing Ukraine of holding back water flow to parts of the country.
  12. I think I figured out the problem. I'm about to do a re-install. First install may have been bad...
  13. I got the new Fire and Rubble up and running. I did an install over the existing installed version. I noticed the mods are no longer working. I have them installed in the data folder in Z. Was working fine before, but no longer. Anyone else have that issue?
  14. In the WW2 titles if tanks get too close infantry can immobilize or destroy tanks with grenades. I can't say I've seen that in Black Sea or Shock Force 2 so don't know if possible. Will that be possible in this title? At some point in the future will the 73-Yom Kippur War be covered?
  15. Besides Tom Clancy and The Third World War, Team Yankee was good reading back in the day. There was another book which I can't recall that was about the Operation Art of War. I had the Third World War by GDW and all the modules as well as Assault, Boots and Saddle and the other games of that series as well as a bunch of SPI games-Firefight, The Next War, Warzburg, Cityfight to name a few. I've been collecting old Strategy and Tactics magazines for years, have a decent stash and the NATO vs Warsaw Pact was a big theme back then. I recently bought NATO The Next War in Europe and old game. Its more of an operational/Strategic game. PC's were just starting to invade the home space. I had a Mac so my offering were limited. Falcon SE and North Atlantic 80 was pretty much all I had. Hair bands and MTV was the other forms of entertainment back in the day.
  16. No more fire and forget magic Javelins to reach out and touch MBTs with for the infantry. Dragons and LAW's anyone? From what I gathered the Dragon didn't have that great of a reputation and don'thow effective LAW's would have been against Soviet MBT's of the time. What other AT weapons can we expect to see the infantry lugging around?
  17. I know steam has a time limit on refunds but its longer than 2 hours. I've gotten refunds and it was way longer than 2 hours-I think its 2 weeks.
  18. Hope everything works out. Hopefully it means more goodies for us. Going to be interesting to see the comments is Steam. Haven't played Close Combat in years and don't know of the hatred of CM by some CC players as I haven't followed both. As some of you already know Microsoft is coming out with FS2020 this month and some of the comments on Steam in the XPlane11 section are defensive.
  19. Thanks! Didn't bother to look in the General section.
  20. I own a bunch of their games and saw Shock Force 2...looked like BF has partnered with Matrix. Interesting.
  21. I’ve had the opportunity to fire a Thompson and PPSh. What stood out was the weight. Same with the Modello 38. Compared to modern SMGs and assault rifles WW2 SMGs are tanks-at least the ones I’ve held and fired. The M1 carbine for all its limitations would have been more my speed but that’s just me.
  22. @37mm. I watched those videos bloody is the word that comes to mind. The Syrians put up a fight.
  23. Seems like in open terrain US forces tend to dominate. In built up or urban areas it gets bloody for both side. Probably why in real life armies try to avoid built up/urban areas if possible. Keep in mind insides of buildings are devoid of inner rooms, furniture, non-combatants and other obstructions so it's easily conceivable that 1 person with an AK could take out a large number of people. A while back a well trained SWAT team in Oakland clearing a house suffered multiple casualties at the hand of a single person armed with a SKS who was hiding in a closet. At close quarters like inside of building body armor provides little or no protection from modern high velocity bullets fired from assault rifles. Firing through walls inside of buildings can also kill or suppress a large number of people. As mentioned blowing holes in wall before entering is the best way to go if possible.
  24. Don't think its made for the Mac. Even if it did using VR would probably not work.
