  1. The one, ok two, mistakes I made all the time at first was trying to move too quickly and spreading my forces too thin. I still have a tendency to fall victim to those same mistakes from time to time. I always find I am in a rush for some reason to try and hurry the battle along. This leads me to sending my pixeltruppen too quickly into unexplored territory and to their deaths. The saying "Never send a Company where a platoon hasn't been, never send a platoon where a squad hasn't been, never send a squad where a scout hasn't been" should be something to always remember. The clock in the game is important to keep an eye on, but don't let it force you into poor decisions. As for splitting up forces, the temptation to send first platoon off to take objective 1 and second platoon off to take objective 2, at the same time, rarely results in success. Keep them together, use the extra troops for more covering and suppressing fire, and tackle the objectives one at a time. Use first platoon as the lead for the first objective, with second backing them up and able to flank or add their firepower to the battle to help overwhelm the enemy. Then use second platoon as the lead for the next objective and first platoon as your reserve. In CM battles it really is almost impossible to use too big of a hammer to hit your enemy with. The issue I struggle the most with now is timing. When do I call in the mortars or try adding one more squad to the fight? Or the barrage I called in will be ending soon, when do I start moving my men up to take advantage of the barrage, yet not walk them into friendly fires. Or trying to get all the pieces of an assault moving at the right times to effectively support each other. For all three of these challenges, practice, practice, practice. Hopefully every battle you will get just a little bit better.
  2. The factors are: Experience: 6 levels, Conscript to Elite Motivation: 6 levels, Poor to Fanatic Fitness: Fit, weakened, Unfit Leadership: -2 to +2 Supply: 5 levels, Severe to Full The possibilites exsist to create virtually any situation you can imagine. In my opinion, whatever preconceived notions one has about the definition of the word "green" or "veteran" with regards to troop quality is meaningless. The game is based off of the definition found in the manual, and for CM purposes, this is the only definition that matters.
  3. Is anyone interested in playing a PBEM for a large CMFI meeting Quick Scenario? The scenario features the map @Pete Wenman made, East of Menfi 2k x 3k, and I have added units and set some parameters. It is a completely fictional scenario, featuring recon units, followed up with infantry reinforcements.
  4. Take a scenario you think has a great AI plan and load it up in the editor. Check out the plan the scenario author created and how it flows and works together. Then experiment and watch your plans over and over again. I am still trying to get my plans perfect and this is the technique I am using.
  5. Here is a dropbox link to the scenario I made. Play as the axis side and hopefully you see what I see. I am not that good with photoshop.... https://www.dropbox.com/s/occzb031ku9k8cs/HT Quick Scenario 3 Regular.btt?dl=0
  6. I have either found a bug or the secret to what the next CM game is going to be based on,The Transformers. The tank in this video is from a Waffen SS Panzer Ad Hoc company. The tank shape shifts every time the camera comes close to the tank. I have a new install of the complete CMBN family with all modules and no mods installed.
  7. Yeah!!! Thanks @Bud Backer!!! Look forward to reading the latest updates to the series again. Looks amazing once again.
  8. Think of it more like a supply management system. Each gun is allowed to shoot a maximum of 100 rounds each day. Of this 100 round limit, a maximum of 20 may be smoke. They can fire any combination requested as long as they don't exceed 20 smoke or 100 total shells. The ammo haulers made sure they had 120 total shells but somebody is getting latrine duty if 20 shells are not sitting beside the gun at the end of the day. The men under my command have long ago figured out this is just one of many wonky orders they will be expected to follow.
  9. I will ask the dumb question but have you tried pressing alt-k to make sure smoke it turned on?
  10. CMFI is my favourite of all the CM titles. There are so many unique units and vehicles, I love to setup qb's with oddball units and just have fun. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Rome to Victory module, can't wait to play a battle or two with the First Special Service Force. Welcome to the community and try not to get too addicted to the games.
  11. It would be fairly straightforward to set something like this up in the editor. Create a flat map and then add in one of every type of unit available in the game. Make one up with say all the vehicles and an other with all the infantry and heavy weapons. You could then look at the units as they appear in game and read all about them in the manual. One could even setup a small village as a target range and shoot up the houses to see how each vehicle sounds, it's rate of fire, and to an extent how effective the unit might be. Crack open the editor, pick a unit or vehicle you want to know more about, load them in and then go play around with them in your own little sandbox. It will be just like being a kid again!
  12. Tomorrow is the Ides of March and I am really hoping for some screenshots or better yet, the start of an AAR between @c3k and @Bil Hardenberger. Your last AAR was a real treat to read every day.
  13. Just play CMFI infantry only quick battles as Italians vs Italians. Pretty much the same thing.
  14. Netflix has a movie in the similar vein, called Look Who's Back. Through a weird time warp/blast of smoke? the real Hitler returns to modern society and makes an attempt to reclaim his former life. The movie seems like a comedy up until the last 15-20 minutes when WHAM, reality hits. It really got me thinking.
  15. Pin point? No. General direction absolutely. Add in the muzzle flash and the probabilities of a reasonable spot chance go up. I am assuming the guns your troops spotted have fired multiple times and not just once.
  16. There is a large Cargill Grain Elevator about 2 km away from the farm where I work. There are several large overhead bins they use for filling trucks or wagons and when it is time for the driver to move ahead, the loading guy bangs a metal rod on the hand rail of the overhead walkway. Twice to move forward and twice to stop. The other day, it was foggy here, two hour bus delay for the kids, kind of foggy. As I was walking into the barn first thing in the morning, I heard them loading trucks and the metal banging sounded very close by. Visibility was less than 200 meters but the sound of the metal banging sounded as if I was in Cargill's yard loading our wagons. It would make sense to me that if the battle is at night and foggy, a sound contact would be very plausible.
  17. Reinstalled the game and have the same results. Edit.bmp Here is a link to a save game file with the issue https://www.dropbox.com/s/vp2dqych6tafs9w/Maxim m1910 with wrong ammo 001.bts?dl=0
  18. My old laptop, from 2014 also with an integrated video card, ran all of the cm series passably well. The draw distance was short and it took a while to load but it worked. Unless your internet plan has limited data, what have you got to lose with downloading the free demo and checking it out? For what it's worth, if you are going to go with a new machine, fastest single thread speed is the most important thing you can spend your money on. My daughters laptop has a far inferior video card than my desktop or my laptop, but her processor is nearly twice as fast either of my machines. When we play LAN games, her machine loads the game at least 15 to 20 seconds faster and runs the game smoother.
  19. I will try to reinstall tonight and see what happens. The unit in question were the company machine guns with a submachine gun battalion.
  20. I started a quick battle against the AI tonight, the first one since upgrading to 4.0, and saw my maxim m1910 machine gun has 100 rounds of 12.7mm AP-I ammo. Are they really able to fire these rounds? I thought they were 7.62X54R only.
  21. She has started taking History in high school and aced a first day quiz from her teacher. The course covers Canadian history from 1900 onward with a strong focus on both wars. She knew the answers to most of the questions from hearing things from me over and over and over. So suddenly I knew things again and all my books went from being annoying to helpful. As for CM, she asked a question about the differences in tanks, so I made a quick scenario with all the different tanks for each side as the forces so she could see the differences. This led to how they work and why was one better than others. A quick battle with her as Germans with Panthers and a Tiger vs me with Shermans and a Firefly, led to more discussions and several more battles. It has been a bit since we last played but her History course is working through the Great Depression right now so it is only a matter of time before the questions come back and another game is in our future.
  22. If the best CM game is the one you spend the most time playing, then CMFI is in my experience the best. It has the longest time frame, July 43 to May 44, most varied terrain and weather, steep mountains to flat farm fields, baking heat to winter blizzards, hard rocky ground to deep mud. And the forces? In my opinion, the widest selection of any of the titles. Italians vs New Zealanders is not a battle happening in any other title. When the Rome to Victory module is released, all the features I just listed will be expanded upon further cementing CMFI as the broadest in scope. And WEGO every battle, every time. After watching a squad leader run from cover to stand over his cowering squad mate, ignore incoming fire, burn off a few dozen rounds in the direction of the enemy and then escort his man to safety, I was hooked. You can't watch that a dozen times in a row in real time.
