LUCASWILLEN05 got a reaction from Pelican Pal in Why are off map reinforcements a thing?
If you go into an area of dense terrain, a viillage or a wood for instance and you failed to take adequate security precautions like for example conducting a quick recon of the area then walk smack bang into an  ambush you probably deserve all you got. t might not be grenade range but it probably will be a very close range kill zone.

And if they appear from off map, maybe there was a balka (the lcal term for a ravine) or a wood. It is not n the map so is not in your unit's operating area. The enemy however is not going to co-perate with you.

There are all sorts of ways something like this might happen in real world combat. You may not luike it and you may not like what whoever designed that particular scenasrio did. But things like that happen in real world combat frm time to time. Sure, it isn't fai but then, WAR IS NOT FAIR If you had been  beter prepared by holding a mobile reserve you would have been better placed to react to this unexpected crisis by redeploying swiftly as soon as you became aware of the theat. Something far easier to do witbh the reserves than forces in contact and in the wrong place for the changed situation.

Learn frm misakes like this rather than complaining how "unfair" the stuation was. A unfair stuation created, in part because you committed all your forces early on instead of folowing sound military principles such as keeping a reserve.

This is why you need something called a RESERVE.  If something unexpected happens you need fresh troops to deal with the unexpected. If you did not keep a reserve you are in trouble and you may have to redeploy units in contact already.

Spitzenhund, you might consider it "unfair" but in reality war. like life, is not fair. If you encounter a sitution you did not expect then,, unfortunately, war is hell. You are going to have to use your tactical skills to deal with the challenge as best you can. As this is only a simulation game, not the real thing, you get to live to fight anotherday and you hopefully learned from your mistake and will apply the lesson to future battles.

In fact Western dithering can be highly dangerous, something that we should have learned from the 130s. The danger is ha Putin thinks he can get away with an actin he really should not take. Perhaps in the CMBS scenario his view was that NATO would not react to his invasion of Ukraine even though the country was moving quickly towards membership of the alliance. Pehaps, in this scenario, Putin felt he could win a quick war (another Georgia 2008) before NATO reacted. However, that turned out to be a grave miscalculatiion resulting in the war the game depicts.

If, in the real world Putin sees a firm and robust Western policy on Ukraine and on Russia in general he will better understad where the line is. Whatever else he may be Putin is no fool as long as he understands where the line is.

You can argue that point with Steve if you like, just trying to make you aware that you are skirting the edge fair, unfair or whatever.  I don't make the rules, just observing.

Skinfaxi A number of people, including the forum admnistrator have kindly requested that you drop it. Please do so. I could very easily pick holes in your last post if I were so minded and so could any of the other very well forum members here. However' this forum is intended for discussion of the CMBS wargame, not for discussion of the real world politics behind it. Everyone, including you, are, of course, entitled to hold poltiical views and I am sure you have some interestiing, if hightly controversial insightson the subject but that discussion is better helld somewhere else

I am sure you have a lot of valuable insight from the Russian perspective but perhaps it is better to confine comments to the military and wargame spheres. It would be a real shame if you ignored the friendly advice you have been given and got your account suspended or banned by the forum adminstrator - which he can do!

Let us hope that my country and yours never end up fighting this (or any other) war for real.

    Thank you for your courtesy.

You got a warning saying that you are not to supposed to make political comments anymore unless the thread is specifically about the political topic you want to talk about. You just made a political statement that was not on topic. Furthermore i have the very strong impression that your previous post was made with the clear intent to provoke, possibly even solely for that purpose.

    But lets keep it there.

Its not a double standard skinfaxi - he's one of the owners of the game company and hence the website. So you're posting on HIS message forum essentially. And you were warned.  And US had posession of Russia and its wealth in the 90's?? Can you mail me some of what you've been smoking?  I'll tell you one thing, I lived in Western Europe during the Cold War and the US in the 90s.  In the 90s Russia was a joke in the US. We didnt want anything made in Russia, or Russian at all. This trend of people not wanting things Russian seems to extend back decades. Thousands of people were shot, imprisoned and detained for trying to flee Russian controlled areas in Europe.  One of the great jokes of history is the Russian statement that the Berlin Wall was made to keep people out of the Socialist Paradise. In fact I seem to remember the US paying the Russian military just to guard its own friggin nuclear weapons.

LUCASWILLEN05 got a reaction from A Canadian Cat in Question about trenches and barbed wire
There is a trick to placig your trenches and barbed wire. The point you have to remember is the map is based on squares. Les say you have a couple of trench sections. Place the first one somewhere. Then place the second section at an angle to your first section. Observe what happens.

This will probably require some experimentation on your part but you pretty son will get the hang of it. I suggest you start by using the small flat map you see when you open the scenario editor first. Then , when you are comfortable with thaty, graduate to experimenting on actual maps

If there will be a CMFG a dream would become true for me. I really like that setting (big fan of OFP, WiC, Wargame and RSR), so besides new modules for CMBS I would really like to see BF developing CMFG.

A 1980s Fulda Gap type base game could lead to a lot of interesting spin off scenarios with the help of the moding community and scenario designers.  A scenario from almost any conflict in the 1980s could be created with NATO and Warsaw Pact equipment.  Grenada, Panama and the Falklands just to name a few.

I would love to see a Combat Mission Fulda Gap game. In the meantime however we can take iinspiration from hypothetical 1980s scenarios and transplant them to 2017 Ukraine. There are a number of very interesting scenarios in Red Storm Rising for instance
