They don't have to retake it as be able to bring the right weapons to bear on the runway. 
The only way this is going to bring Putin down is with the deaths of Russian service personnel.
I am truly saddened that we are hoping Ukraine will inflict the maximum damage on the Russian forces, yet those that put them in harms way will have hot meals and vodka in their dachas tonight, may hell truly exist and be visited upon the Dick"tator who has brought this upon the innocent. 

with all due respect to my friend Aragorn (et al), I don't agree this is somehow the fault of the west from a military perspective.  No majority in any country in the west was ready to go to war over Ossetia or Crimea.  The only thing we could've done was sanctions.  And now Putin is warning us that he has nukes if we interfere. 
The choice for the west was get into WW3 or not over Putin's previous agressions.  So exactly what was the west supposed to do other than sanctions?

Russian ambassy in Kyiv lowered the flag on own building and departed to Russia. UKR MFA strongly recommened to all Ukrainian citizens to leave Russia among nearest 48 hours. 
Ukrainan troops last night got "red alert" readiness. Several recon groups of enemy under artillery fire tried to infiltreate on Ukrainian-controlled territory on Donetsk direction, but were engaged and withdrew. Looks like first probes before atatck. Also the enemy first time since 2015 used Grad MLRS, for the last night and morning 120 rockets were launched. In previous years they rarely used single shots with Grad-P. Ukrainain artillery and heavy mortars mostly keep silence. Most of the enemy assets, which firing on our positions located in residential areas or too close to them - looks like command prohibited the answering because doesn't want to give for Russia propaganda additional food, that's enough their clumsy work video-fakes for now to see who is who. Though, periodically, if there is allow a situation our troops fire back mostly with mortars.

Yes if Ukraine wanted to try and take them back. The reality is that Ukraine was and is not in anyway capable of taking back their land vs the full might of Russia.

The usual suspects trying to derail a thread with whatsaboutism, name calling, false equivalency statements to side track the main issue.
How about addressing the title of the thread a give us an insight on what you think Putin is trying to achieve? 
Personally I think he is creating a context to annex more of Ukraine to solve the water crisis in Crimea and perhaps even get regime change, but I think he has overlooked the downside and is in a corner which he is struggling to get out of. Even geniuses make mistakes. 

Since "compatriots" cried "Putin, enter the troops!", "Donbas is Russia!", since they and Russian proxies have attacked our force structures, seized their weapon and later bagan to receive heavy weapons, ammunition, fuel from Russia, since their "people militia" became proxy-forces under command of Russian generals of 12th Reserve Corps, they are no more "compatriots", they are enemies, elements of Russian hybride war. Ukrainain Constitution, like and Constitutions of any country clearly tells what the state must do in case of territorial integrity threats. 
And with whom we should have to negoitiate? With Russian citizen Strelkov, which seized Sloviansk?

So far he has made $3 Billion of increased oil revenue. Not a bad payday for a month's work.

Let's hope the often repeated words "Russia will not invade Ukraine" from Putins henchmen is true.

Yes the backend seems to be automated to allow easier tournament management and for displaying scores / rankings. The founders of Slitherine used to (and still do) play a lot of tournaments from WRG rules to games today. They are passionate about wargames from table top days and this I think is the reason they have invested time in an inbuilt tournament system. 
IMO it is actually a smart business move as it keeps people wanting to play and to play in the FOG2 tournaments you need to keep buying the DLC's.
