1.
quote:
Originally posted by Schrullenhaft: If you have FSAA enabled (especially 4X) that will cause a very considerable slow down.

Bingo. Turned FSAA off and now I have 130 fps in the fish screensaver. Once again you are correct. Thanks!
2. Thanks for the response. The application that confirmed my suspicion of a slowdown is a 3D aquarium screen saver, which can be found at http://www.serenescreen.com/ It can be used as a screensaver, but I run it as an .exe instead, which is how most people use it. It has a fps meter which can be toggled on and off. My home computer gets a fps of 30 at 1024x768 while my office computer get a fps of 70 at the same resolution. With a fully modded CM I used to get a fps of 100 or more, while I now get about 70. I'm not going to try any risky tweaks that might screw up my computer. The only harware I have added to my computer is a USB flash memory card reader, which I don't think should be causing any trouble. It could be that I have too much stuff loaded on my computer. I've had it since August of 2000 and I should probably reinstall Windows 98, but I've never done that before and it sounds like a pain to do.
3. Ever since I started updating the drivers on my 64MB GeForce 2 GTS my computer's graphics performance has decreased. I can still play CM and stuff, but the frame rate has really taken a hit. I get a much better frame rate on my office computer which is a Dell PII 450 with a 16 MB Voodoo 3 than I do on my Dell PIII 933 system. Both are running Win98SE. I suspect the problem may be that I have a Dell and the NVidia reference drivers may not be fully compatible with Dell's version of the GeForce 2. I am currently running the very latest version of NVidia's driver (from their site) and I am considering replacing it with the old 6.34 driver on Dell's site, since i never had any problems with the original driver. One question is can you go back to an older video driver, and another questions is should I even bother trying this?
4. Capt. Wacky, I will probably get an Alienware when the time comes as well. What monitor are you going to use? You didn't say you were getting one from Alienware, and I have heard the ones they offer aren't so good. I have a PIII 933 now, but it is having trouble coping with some of the newer stuff without turning down some options.
5. How about forming ad hoc platoons within the same company? That would help. Maybe it can take a few battles like it does for recovered vehicles.
6. The Soviet MG teams will be able to run because the MGs had wheels. Sharpshooters will be replaced by snipers.
7. I upgraded to CMMOS 3.0 yesterday and I also installed Makjager's JgdPzVs. I placed the BMPs in the CMBO\BMP folder and I placed the Ruleset 020 folder in the CMMOS folder in the GEM Software Prods folder. I see the menu for the JgdPzVs when I run CMMOS, but the files won't load. Please help.
8. Please change your member name to Michael Jordan.
9. If the AI can use the upper floor in CMBB then maybe it will also deploy troops on the upper floors when a new battle in an operation loads. As it is now all the troops you had placed on the upper floors get moved to the lower floors. Just a minor inconvenience, but something that should be fixed nonetheless.
10. Resolving combat takes the most computing power. When you play a PBEM game the early files are rather small, but once the shooting starts the files get bigger. Near the end when all hell is breaking loose the files are comparativly huge because of the all the shooting going on.
11. If you move units too close to the edge of the map they can wander off. In real life there were no edges to the battlefield. This feature simulates the lack of edges and prevents edge hugging gaminess. Once the units are gone you can't get them back. Exit zones, when present, are marked by a banner that says, "EXIT" running along the applicable edge of the map. You can't miss them when they are turned on.
12. That was pretty cool. Lower the frame rate as Gyrene suggested, and add some mods if your computer can handle it.
13. Everyone else has visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads. Go to sleep or Santa won't leave you any presents.
14. If sharpshooters had a higher rate of fire and more ammo they would rule the battlefield, at least as far as infantry is concerned.
15. Is the board going to shut down at some point like last year? I need to know in advance so I can try to plan around it.
16. 7-11 is usually open on Christmas for last minute shopping and dinner. Oh... Happy Holidays! [ 12-21-2001: Message edited by: Pvt. Ryan ]

17. No, I wasn't around when CMBO first shipped, but mine was one of the last before they ran out. I certainly understand your concern, and share it to a degree, but I think Battlefront has a better idea of what to expect this time and hopefully will have a system set up to avoid a repeat of what happened with CMBO. I don't think supply is going to be a problem. And I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but a more reliable method of shipping should really help. You'll know exactly when to expect your order and you'll be able to track it if something goes wrong. The packaging monkeys that Battlefront hires can pack thousands of orders in anticipation of the release announcement. There is nothing personal inside those packages - just a shrinkwrapped manual and CD. (There is a CD in here, isn't there???) I don't remember if there was an invoice inside or not. If they have to put an invoice inside then they can not have the pre-packaged orders ready. That would destroy my plan. I do have faith in Battlefront. Think "Doodads."
18. What if 50% of the people who are going to order CMBB as soon as it is available decide to take advantage of the priority order option? That would defeat the purpose. BTS/Battlefront knows how successful CMBO has been and probably has a pretty good idea of what the initial demand is going to be. I believe Madmatt said they are implementing a new ordering process that will be more streamlined. I imagine they are anticipating an initial heavy demand. I don't know much about product fulfilment, but let's say CMBB is ready on June 1. They get 1,000, 5,000, or however many units they expect to ship the first week all packaged and ready to go. On June 6 they announce that CMBB is available and start accepting orders. How much effort can it take to process credit card orders by computer and slap computer generated labels on all those packages? At the end of the day a FedEx or UPS or whatever delivery truck shows up and all those orders are out the door and on their way. And if you want to pay extra, pay for priority delivery and you will have CMBB the next day. I have nothing against priority ordering, I just don't think it is necessary.
19. Why does there have to be priority ordering? All of us here are fans of the game whether we heard about CM when Steve was a zygote or we heard about it just yesterday. We are all going to want to buy CMBB, and most of us are going to want it right away. What would really make a difference is having a shipping method more reliable than the US mail. I think Madmatt said in an earlier Q&A that they were considering alternative shipping methods. If we knew that were likely to receive CMBB in X number of days based on our shipping preference, then I think that alone would satisfy a lot of people. If you want CMBB really quickly, pay for overnight delivery. If you just want it in a reasonable amount of time, pay for ground delivery.
20.
quote:
Originally posted by Joe Shaw: I think we should do it by the current member number Joe

Now that is a brilliant idea! I don't really care about pre-ordering, but I would like to have UPS or FedEx shipping as an option, for both speed of delivery and the ability to track the shipment.

22.
quote:
Originally posted by Madmatt: My own personl crusdade was to get that implemented to take better screenshots!

Madmatt, maybe they can code a way to turn off game elements such as unit markers so we can take nice screenshots? That rubble looks eerily reminiscent of some other rubble I have seen recently.
23. Will the hard coded objects in CMBO, such as berets, mortars, bazookas, tracers, be modable in CMBB? I'm sure Maximus wants to know too.
