1. ...and make sure your mortar is not in a building.
2. Well, question is if the gun had already shot or not. If not, all you might hear is the crew (if the gun is stationary) and they could produce the same sound contact as infantry - even if I would prefer my gun crews not to talk at all or whisper only with the enemy close by.
3. I made a large operation map with lots of elevation changes and even vertical cliffs. To have a more "rockier" look on those cliffs I simply modified on of the existing rough mods, adding mor "grey rocks" to the "rough" tile and little grenn parts left. It did make for reasonable looking vertical cliffs.
4. Found one topic line: "Interesting Question for the Board: How old are you?"
5. welcome to the board zukkov, there have been topics called "where we all come from" and alike. A search in the archives might help finding those. The average age was about 30-35 if I remember correctly. Cheers Marcus ****
6. It would be a "fogthrower"... Nebel = fog Werfer = thrower
7. My grandfather was in one of those cavalry units (belonged to the "Reiteregiment Ludwigsburg", before the war their battalion was stationed in Donaueschingen, Southern Germany). However shortly after the beginning of Barbarossa they encountered a small counter attack by a few Russian tanks. As they headed for cover the Russian tanks mowed down their horses; afterwards they were regular infantry...
8. WineCape, I got into CM in a similar way. When the demo of CM was out I was visiting a good friend of mine in Manila and he showed me the demo there. However I didn't got really hooked then and did not buy the full version after it eas released. Only a year later, when I was visiting the Philippines again, I got addicted. My friend had bought the full version by then and there were several of these seemingly endless nights playing hot seat games. Sure enough there were quite a few bottles of ice cold beer involved as well Even before travelling back home to Switzerland I ordered my copy of the game from an internet cafe in Bangkok. Upon arrival in good ol'Switzerland the CD was already in my mailbox. Now I'm in Bangkok again and my CM CD is in my lugagge. And I'm heading over to the Philippines in a few days from now...some more hot seat games coming up and some more bottles of beer will be emptied... Cheers all Marcus ****
9.
quote:
Originally posted by Chad Harrison: What? How will I ever live without fighting againt (or with ) Sturms, Gerbils, Hamsters, and Fallschrim all in one battle!

Use the scenario editor and you might even throw in a couple of Pink Panthers
10. @ Andreas: Thanks for the short answer ('absolute spotting') to my question; In combination with 'smoke' the search took me right to the specific topic and it answered my question. Marcus ****
11. How about if we could order our units (rapid firing guns in particular like AA guns and MG) blind into the smoke? Like the aera fire command that sticks to any part of a building. Sometimes this could be useful, enemy advancing over a bridge under a smokescreen for example.
12. Happy 2002 to all - even if I'm already in year 2544...
13. doodads - what an improvement! Just amazing! Can't wait for CMBB! BTW, whose names are written on those tombstones? Anybody able to zoom in a bit?
14. I had the same feeling when I first started playing CM; but then I did a couple of tests, one for example ten 75mm Shermans with regular AP ammo frontally against ten Tiger I without ammo and immobile in rubble at a range of 200m (if I remember right). I just counted the HITS and out of some 250 hits, there were only 3 "weak spot penetrations", two knocking out the Tiger, one doing no serious damage. But then you have to take into account that the 76mm Sherman with toungsten rounds is a completly different story as Tom mentioned. Regards Marcus ****
15. Using a HQ unit and 3-4 mortars as mentioned above I had success in taking out open topped vehicles as well. If the vehicle is not moving I simply target it right away, if it is moving I aera target a spot which might be likley in the vehicles path next turn. The fast incoming mortar rounds in quantity of several mortars often kills the vehicle when it's crossing the aera target the mortars are firing at. This takes a bit of guessing, but in aeras where the path of a vehicle is rather obvious (like in a village or a road in a forest) it worked for me sometimes.
16. Location: Basel, Switzerland during 5 months per year when it's not too cold there. Somewhere between Yangon and Manila during the 7 months when it's too cold in good ol' Switzerland... Seems no other Swiss people around here - maybe they don't play war games because they would have to chose either Allies or Axis and therefore couldn't stay neutral anymore...or they are all busy playing Navy games.
17. @Germanboy I agree that mods should not enter judgement, but it just could be mentioned that there are plenty of graphic mods out there. As mods being fairly inaccessible for non-English speaking people, I doubt that a bit. All you need is the link to one of the major web sites and browse there a little. Even without understanding English sooner or later one will stumble over some mod previews and all you need to do is to find the download button ( I think even non English speaking people do know what "download" means). An other approach would be to post on this forum in your own langauge and ask for help. I'm sure someone who speaks the same language (if around; asking in Burmese wouldn't get much responses I guess ) would help out and e-mail mods, provide links or maybe even send a CD. As for the connection there is not much you can do about, maybe just get a few low res mods - or hop down to an internet place with cable modem and dl it there and get it burned on a CD. If one really wants mods, he will find a way how to get them. What kind of people is that, they expect everything falling into their lap? I recommend a trip to a remote province to China, alone of course Regards Marcus
18.
quote:
Originally posted by Germanboy: Well, there was an article in some rag - marched straight into the Top20 in it (all the rest real-time or FPS), and the only drawback was the graphics. Not bad for an 18 month old game.

Germanboy, saying in the article the graphics being a drawback, did they mention that there are loads of mods out there which considerably improve the looks of the game?
19. @lucero1148 indeed most people on this board are CM addicts. The PBEM/TCP feature plus random or custom made maps give CM sheer endless possibilites for replaying the game without getting into a boring routine. No battle will be the same, especially playing human opponents. Agree that the learning curve is rather steep compared to other games. One has to make some efforts to learn about all those little but important details. Bangkok is great as usual, had a few good nights out since being back from Laos. Don't worry, the number of CM players in Manila will double somewhen after X-mas and New Years when I come over
20. Do the Ueberfinns come complete with their ration of Wodka as well? If yes, sent me the mod [ 11-24-2001: Message edited by: tools4fools ]

21. @ Diceman: I don't know how CM is doing in Germany, but since it is in the stores there suddenly it has become a topic in some German discussion forums I read for a long time (and where CM was never mentioned before). Seems it is doing OK. @ lucero1148: Guess you are the only CM copy owner in the Philippines... Even I Bangkok (where they seem to copy about everything) I never have seen any pirated copies of CM so far, BTW. [ 11-24-2001: Message edited by: tools4fools ]

22. My favorite vehicle in CM? Any kind of burning enemy vehicle
23. It seems to me that vehicles usually bog down at the same spot as well. If I got a vehicle bogged and manage to move it out again I try to avoid to move over the same spot again. Just a tile to the left or right seems to make chances smaller to bog down again. Anybody observed somethink like this as well? Are there certain tiles "affected" and bogging vehicles during a battle or does it change randomly over the whole map during a battle? Anybody knows? Back to the beer ****
24. @ IMHO Sure enough a good AT defense cuts life short for recon vehicles; That's why I do not expect my recon vehicles to last long anyway. And that's why I like the 20mm 250 HT - it's cheap and its small ammo load won't last long anyway... I did have success in using those vehicles. Once I had two doing recon for me and an AT gun opened up on them. One got toasted but the other one took out the gun. Good trade I thought because the hidden AT gun could have hit instead one of my tanks following up. I agree that Bazookas and Panzerschrecks are a cheap and good AT defensive. I use them often to cover my flanks. They can spot infantry coming up there and afterwards I can call in reserves to deal with it plus they can take care very well on their own of any lone scouting vehicles. On the other hand if you are on the attack, you need something to scout for you. I do prefer infantry halfsquads supported by light vehicles (as the 250 20mm HT), but then sometimes you need to go real fast, especially in a meeting engagement, and that's when a pair of halftracks does a good job. Using a pair, maybe a 20mm and a 75mm, makes them more effective.
