Combat Mission Battle for Normandy Steelbook YouTube video

Recommended Posts

I like to think I am mature and self restrained. When I was a kid I used to sleep late on Xmas day, I eat low fat yoghurt, and when the iPad was released I waited 3 whole hours before I bought one (lining up is for geeks).

But when I returned to this forum and saw CMBfN was available for pre-order I got a little excited. And when I visited the pre-order page and saw a youtube link my fingers started to shake. And then I clicked on the link and found it was a 90 second video of a metal box. Really? Is this what you pay your marketing department hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for?

I think you can learn something about marketing from Apple. For the release of the iPad 2 Apple staged a release spectacular at a specially built auditorium in Las Vegas (I believe they had to knock down several casinos) and the release concert was hosted by an animatronic Steve Jobs puppet (they had considered unthawing Steve Jobs from cryogenic suspension but decided to save him for the iPhone 5 launch).

Anyway, I was slightly disappointed that I didn't get to see a video of in-game footage. Nice box though.

I´m not sure if this was meant as a joke. But if it isn´t, I´m quite sure that BFC would answer something like "We don´t even have a marketing department"

But speaking of ingame video: I´ve got my own little business making video presentations for companies. I´d gladly make some for CM:BN too - and at a very reasonable price. :-)

That is of course, if Battlefront is interested

I studied journalism and writing at the University of Queensland and I can assure you this is not a joke. Studies have show there is a significant difference between personal communication and written communication. In personal communication a lot of subtextual information is transmitted visually (through gestures and facial expressions) and aurally (through tone, word stress, etc). The written word is therefore a relatively sterile medium. To compensate authors have developed a literary technique called "exaggeration". I have found that, when writing, the subtle use of the literary technique of exaggeration can make a story a million times more interesting.

I didn't study journalism (as you can probably tell by my poor spelling and grammar) but I still knew that :) ... thought everyone did to be honest.

I would be very very surprised if it was anywhere even close to that.

Correct. We don't have a marketing department. Or any other department for that matter :)

As for the video... well, we had it and needed to put it somewhere, especially since the online viewer is restricted to IE and needs plugins that not everyone will want. Notice how the video is not in the top spot on the YouTube channel :)

We're working on teasers, trailers and in-game videos already. You don't see them up yet because we had to get code optimizations in place before recording them. A debug build stuttering because the recording software is eating up all the resources wouldn't make the smooth gameplay justice.

The problem isn't so much of a super PC, but of the fact that debug code (running in the background and recording ANYTHING you do) and video recording code will always cause slowdowns. Additionally, the optimization we've been waiting for included improved LODs etc. If we show you guys videos, it's supposed to reflect what the game will look like when you play it at home, and not how we debug stuff ;)

And lastly, there is always the question of time and resources. Taking videos takes time (err... and resources). We'd need a super PC and a couple new employees. You'll need to buy a few more copies of CMBN for that to happen ;)
