Supertanks - Maus

For the terminally sad amongst us that like such things:

Pzkw Maus (AKA Porsche 205)

Manufacturer Alkett, chassis no. 351451 on

Crew 5 wgt 188 tons Length 10.09m, width 3.67m ht 3.66m

Engine (V1 prototype) MB509 V12 a/c engine 1080HP (?)

(V2) MB517 Diesel

Speed 20kmh, range 186km

Armament 1x12.8cm KwK44 L/55 32 rounds

1x7.5cm KwK44 L36.5 200 rds,

1xMG

Armour Front side rear top/bottom

turret 240mm/var 200/30deg 200/7deg 40/90deg

Hull upper 200/55 180+100/0 180/38 80-40/90

Hull 200/35 180/0 180/30 100-40/90

Gun mantlet 240/saukopfblend

(excuse formatting)

For ref (since we are talking silly armour here), the Maus would never have been a success, and was anyway completely outclassed by a design of years earlier: http://www.combinedfleet.com/okun_biz.htm ;)

Don't know about you, but I find that amusing sometimes. Can't explain it really ;)

What is it with some people and the overweight abortion school of tanks?

For some weird reason, at least I get the kicks out of it sometimes. Now, don't get me wrong - I absolutely love historical battles and usually play with pz IIIs and IIs rather than sturmmörsers. But occasionally, i like the change.

I know it's a slippery slope demanding sorts like Maus in the game solely on the basis that I happen to like that certain type. Even though CM is historically very accurate an detailed game, it wouldn't take anything out of the credibility of the game if for example mouse was in. If you don't like a unit, you're not required to play with it, methinks. smile.gif

Again, I know there were some real world constraints like fitting the game on cd, KwazyDog not having time to model even some of the more common models and so on. That I can live with. What's slightly annoying, is some CM afficionados who don't want an unit in just because it is not historically correct. If I want to watch my maus slowly sink and dissappear in a mudpit then I should be allowed to do that, even though no maus was actually ever lost in a mud pit... </font>

I think some people are making a mountain out of a maushill. :D

I for one don't really care if it made it in or not, I have enough challenge using the historical vehicles against one another. And for some reason, the fantasy hypothetical scenarios (e.g. Abrams vs Panthers) never excited me much either.

For that matter, I was recently infatuated for a time with Silent Storm...an excellent WW2 tactical simulator at the individual soldier level. But once the "science fiction" elements of the game kicked in, it lost all it's appeal to me.

To each their own, of course. I'd just rather see the limited resources of the BFC team going into realistic, plausible and historical simulations.

I actually don't care about the Maus, but I wouldn't mind some busty chicks in lederhosen. Maybe that's what they meant by the escort company in that other thread?

Would I mind the Maus? No not at all. I don't mind those who do not play the same way I do being accomodated. I do not wish to take away from ANYONE'S enjoyment of this fine game if at all within reason, which the Maus certainly is.

The Maus itself would be priced too high to show up anywhere unless a scenario designer puts it in on purpose or rarity is set to variable and an extremely lucky/rare dice roll occurs anyway. So I don't see what the problem is with rare or fringe vehicles such as the ARLV 44, T-28, E-series, Panther Ausf.F, etc. They would be fun for some and could be simply ignored by those who do not wish to use them. Think about it, how many items in CM do you stay away from already? Does it bother you that they are there nonetheless for someone who DOES wish to use them? I happen to enjoy using the Marmon-Harrington armored *chuckle* car. Not everyone does. I certainly hope it doens't go away because no one else likes it......

Actually, one Maus *was* shipped to the desert war, but it promptly settled into the sand and was never seen again. The tank specialists involved were flabbergasted, and of course the Fuerher was not pleased--reports of the incident were sealed and the technicians handed over to the Gestapo.

It's a myth I can smell it.

Well I'd like a future CM version with all the cool stuff that'd have been/could have been on the field in -46!

And make that both east and west fronts. And let me choose who fights who! I wanna see a Centurion or Black Prince duking it out with an IS-3. US vs British, US vs Soviets, whatever.

I think I'll just hold my breath while waiting. redface.gif

I'd suggest you learn how to code then. Pronto.

Black Prince? Bwahahahahahahaha!

Lame.

Oh, and Centurion Vs. JS3? Centurion loses - that's why they developed the Conqueror.

Cold War CM, that's what'd be good.

A reminder to all you clamouring for the Maus, I dimmly recall way beck when CMBB was just starting to be worked on Matt posted a question asking who wanted the Maus as well as the IS-3 and T-44 in the game "just for fun". You should'a seen the sh*t storm that descended on Matt's head from the resident grogs for suggesting such a non-historical addition to the game! I was flabberghasted that people would actually object to including the Maus. Judging from his reaction Matt seemed to have been taken aback by the objections and never proposed including the Maus again.

Its hard to fathom that people get up in arms about options included in the game, rather than things excluded. Am I missing something or is it not A GAME?

Was it really community feedback that changed plans to include what-if/fringe vehicles? If so, that must have been one mell of a hess on these boards. I'm almost afraid to use the search function, lest I run into discussions which hearken back to the days of WWIIOnline and the PlaySkool® forums. Yikes! Say it ain't so! Please, anything but that!!!!

Don't be ignorant. And give us a little bit of credit. Steve opened it up to a vote, we all posted poetry in favour of our viewpoint, and Madmatt selected the best one based on his lifelong study of linguistics at Yale. As I recall, the final nail in the Maus' coffin was a 363 stanza love sonnet by Seanachai entitled "Maus to Maus Resuscitation" in which he eloquently championed the supremacy of historical accuracy over fun.
