*Jay*
Never uninstall CM. Bought copy of CM a year ago (8/16 to be exact...still have receipt). Had small hard drive at that time. Over time, HD gets full. Finally had to make room for stuff. Uninstalled CM for space (hey, I had to!). Two months ago, bought new 40 Gig HD. I have "real estate" to spare now. Begin looking for Combat Mission CD...find in in old storage box (I had moved since I purchased). Did not think to place CD in jewel case before moving. Tried to install. Stops halfway through installation. Try again. Same thing. Frustration mounts. Take out CD. Inspect it. DEEP SCRATCH ON SURFACE! Panic! Run to Comp-USA, purchase CD scratch remover. Polish Combat Mission CD to fine metallic finish. Scratch still looks bad. Try to install, cross fingers...no go. Data obviously corrupted due to scratch. Reality sets in...just bought house, funds low. Wait...my "savings account"! The plastic jug full of change collected over the past year! Dump change out, begin counting. Excellent! Enough to purchase another Combat Mission CD. Placing order Friday! Lesson learned. Spent an hour making cover for new CD using America Online CD cases they always send in the mail, the DVD-style ones. CM disk will now bask in glory (and protection) with own case next to collection of WW2 books. Never...never uninstall Combat Mission! Schrullenhaft
Are you using the Installer to install CM ? Does it give you an error for a particular file not copying ? Have you tried to manually copy the entire CD to the C:\PROGRAM FILES\CMBO directory ? Is your C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory empty (if it isn't it may cause probelms with the Installer). The scratch may be the problem, but you'll want to try the above suggestions first (not to deprive BTS of any further revenue...).
lcm1947
Uninstall CM disk? I would never have thought about that.
OstFront6
Holy crap, why didn't I ever think of that! I knew all those AOL mailings had to be good for something. And to think I've been throwing out all those cases - aaaargh!
Sergeant Saunders
I put my CM:BO on a removable 40GB HD just so that I wouldn't have this problem.
Pak40
I don't know what BTS's policy is but I'd be willing to bet they'd replace the CD for a small fee to cover the cost of shipping and material, so long as you sent the scratched CD first. *Jay*
Thanks for the help, Schrullenhaft, but I had tried manually copying CD to another folder previously. Same result. The disc is damaged. No biggie. I don't mind supporting quality work. Haven't been here in a while. Was a lurker mostly. Almost unbelieveable to see over a quater of a million posts here. Simply amazing. So between all of this posting, have you guys figured out who killed Kennedy?

Well, it was damaged due to my poor packing. I blame myself for the damage. I wouldn't dream of asking for a break due to a mistake I made. I'll chalk it up as a life lesson and buy another. I do have a bit more money that I made out, anyway.

Andrew H.
IIRC, there was some guy whose kid/lawnmower/annoyed wife destroyed his CM disc and BTS made arrangements to send him a new one (presumably at a nominal fee). Of course, I don' think he actually uninstalled the game, so you may be beyond the pale.

David Aitken
I killed Kennedy... I have the receipt to prove it. I explained my mistake to the FBI and they gave me a new one. David Aitken
And while we're on the subject, if you want to destroy a CD you have to use a particular method. I saw a photo a while ago of I think the Japanese or Chinese 'destroying' thousands of pirated software CDs by flattening them with a bulldozer. This is about the surest way to avoid doing them damage, short of packing them away in a box full of polystyrene chips. I tried killing an AOL CD and it would not die. Bend it one way. Bend it the other way. Fold it over. Frantically wag it back and forth. No dice. I had to hack away at it with a scalpel before it would snap. Later I dropped my R.E.M. New Adventures In Hi-Fi CD on a stone surface and it cracked, so the end of Low Desert was jumpy and I couldn't listen to Electrolite. Bummer. So if you want to kill a CD, drop it onto a hard surface. Or if a quick death is too good for it, humiliate it for all eternity as a coaster. Michael Emrys
Edward Abbey had a way of dealing with TV sets that might work for unwanted CDs too. He propped it up on a log and shot it through the middle of the screen with a hunting rifle. Michael

86smopuim
I had a remarkably similar situation as the orignal poster of this thread. My work arround was: download demo install 1.2 patch. toss my scrathed cd in drive. CM works. I just cant read from certain sectors.

Michlos
I too had to commit the ultimate sin (uninstalling CM when I switched HDs). The few days I had to be without CM were rough... sweating, shaking, shortness of breath  ... women talk about the pain of giving birth but that is nothing compared to the agony of not being able to blast Fritz to kingdom come. It was perfectly readable after I boiled it. My Norton Utilities CD was sitting on the floor in an envelope case and I think it got stepped on-- they replaced it for $10. I think the ease of destrution of a CD is proportional to the value of its contents.
