Very well said Dr W.  And I'd like to thank you too for your input to the game.  Even if I lost most of the battles 😉.

Expression of gratitude to Battlefront team.
Like other players of Battlefront's Combat Mission series, I have my own wish list, of things I'd like to see that I think would make the game better. Now at the age of 72 and wargaming as my primary hobby for 64 years, I have learned that such expressions of "I'd like to see it done this way", appear to be an inevitable response to any set of rules and any game. Tiresome sometimes. To rules writers, game coders and games masters, such feedback can be a bit discouraging. So at this time I want to say:
I am VERY HAPPY playing the WWII Combat Missions series 'as is'. It is afterall - a game.  From my perspective it is a perfect follow-up or replacement for miniature wargaming. To me this is what it feels and looks like. Except it looks better than minis, I can field larger armies, and I don't have to learn a 60+ page book of rules!
When we gamers sometimes appear to gripe about this or that feature no implemented - we might as ourselves, "How long have I been playing these games." For me the answer is "Continuously since the release of series one - Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin, CM Afrika Korps etc." So I must have been enjoying it as is. No? So many years of fun.
And I LOVE having an easy to use Scenario Editor. I probably spend more time tinkering with map making, or tweaking graphics than actually playing. I have yet to play through all of CMBN's over 300 sceanrios in my collection.
In conclusion. THANK YOU Battlefront for many years of happy gaming, for your many hours of coding work, your responses to the community. Given my wonky ticker, I don't knwo if I'll be around to enjoy engine 5. I hope so.

Years back a fan used his skills to write a python code plug-in for Blender to import and export the CM mdr files.
@sbobovyc never got around to succeed with mds files.
Can BFC please allow mds file uniform modding by fans? Open a dialog with him to get his mds plug-in functioning...

Some 3D model bugs were fixed by the fans using Blender.

    1. Numerous titles had long standing unfixed error with Bunker ATG had firing blast from concrete base. Very simple error in the naming of a model component and fix was done.
    2. CMCW sprockets on several vehicles not moving. Same issue as above. Model component named cylinder and not wheel.
    3. Big ugly turret issues with F&R PzIII. Fixed by grabbing model from other title.
Maybe your beta team can develop an house "repair squad" for these simple issues. Fix before game is released is obvious goal. If not that then post fix in forums as a link to an official mod for z folder versus waiting for a patch. THEN later roll that initial fix into patch brz.
Here is where you must tell how the beta team does catch many errors and a few slip through. Of course. Everybody (should) appreciate/s the beta team. But these 3D errors got through...

British troops follow always in second position the us army, is perhaps a coincidence, but for the time it was also the case with CMSF1 valid for the CMComWlz MG CMFI, and we know now CW and CMFB, personly I am not very surprise about this, and I am happy already to have them, but of course East/West Germany (plus CZ perhaps ) will be really welcome.

I don't know what kind of emails you're getting from people, but I can't really recognise that "typical customer" from this forum at least. Maybe I saw someone like that post once or twice in ten years.
On the contrary, I think the people I see here are generally quite polite and constructive, and with a lot of knowledge about history. Many have a military background and often work in highly technical careers.
What I do see here are a lot of suggestions, polite requests, and bug reports. Sometimes frustration that important issues can take a very long time to get patched. And I also see some very creative and talented people spending countless hours on scenario design and modding to improve any part of the game they are able to improve.
But despite this, I'm also getting the impression that Battlefront in general feels under perpetual siege by completely unreasonable and childish customers who don't know what they actually really want.
It's really puzzling to me why there seems to be this gap between what I read on the forums and the messaging back to the players.
Also, I'm puzzled about the priorities of Battlefront. If I understand correctly, it seems you have now spent around a whole year trying to program some kind of PBEM tournament system. In all the years I've been on this forum, I must have read hundreds of ideas people had about things they'd like to see in the game. But I've never seen anyone ask for an automated tournament system.
As someone who has spent many hundreds of hours on your games, I can say for sure they don't 'suck'. I don't have time to play games that suck. There's just a lot of things that could be improved a lot. And that's why I stopped buying them after buying only two titles. It has very little to do with the price point and it was not to make some kind of big statement. But it was very influenced by not seeing the game move forward in a more fundamental way.
Personally I'd be fine with it if my own little list of pet peeves, suggestions, and ideas are never implemented, if it at least means some of the other good ideas that other people have put forward are. Nobody's asking for the moon on a stick here, just some kind of progress in some area would be nice.

I realice that you guys are a very small company and that there are limits on what you can do with limited manpower and funding but i have to say that its my opinion (and i belive others as well) that  during the last couple of years the consumer side of things might have been put a bit to much on the back bench...
Many, many things are wished for by many people but very few things have been added...
I belive you mentioned that the prioriteis will shift somewhat over to the consumer side ones again...That would be a most welcome shift....
You guys are without question producing the best tactical game avaliable...well done !
We just want it to be even better and have more of it 😊

    I beg to differ !
I wan't to PLAY the game...Not watch videos of it. Sure having a replay feature would be nice but there are a ****load of other stuff that i would prefer to see added way, way before any full lenth replay feature...
Better tactical AI, Better AI programing options, Improved scenario editor over all, improved performance, co-op multiplayer, aditional 'in game' gameplay features etc, etc...
Full lenth replay videos comes way, way down on my list...Thats for sure

Engine 5 for CMBN?  Hope it will:
    1. Allow troops to ride tanks. All Canadian reports both written and verbal direct to me from veterans now deceased, indicates that they did so routinely from D-Day on.
    2. Stop trees blocking AT rounds.
    3. Allow building fires.
To mention just a very few.

I don't have a powerpoint presentation nor a flipchart but here is my pitch.
    CMEW Combat Mission Early War
    A war gamer kit.
This is designed to snag that segment of the market using as little of Charles' time as possible.
It will be a lot of "some assembly required" and a lot of "mods required" and fan content based.
It can ship without any scenarios or campaigns.
It should be based off CMFI as that title has lots of nations for each side.
Cram pack each side with all existing vehicles and as many of what I call place holders as possible.
Place holder Vehicles IN THE CODE to try and be the early war vehicles and match to an existing mdr but we could mod to be PzI, tankettes, etc. A vehicle with just an MG and light armor on tracks for example.
The scenario editor would be used to mix and match sides as needed for Spanish Civil War, Winter War, Poland 39, Norway, Invasion of France, Sea Lion, Barbarossa, North Afrika.
It would be designed to be able to try and replicate a wide range of "early war" confrontations AFTER modded.

It's called "THE ARISTOCRATS!!!" (famous end to a classic crude joke)

I don't know Steve if the update was a good thing or a bad one. Looks like people are a bit on the twisted side. I was somewhat let down by some of the information, but you did say it was an overview, I was looking forward to more specifics. Having said that, I will wait and see what takes place. For me CMFB is what I am waiting for. Good luck, I a nice nap will go a long way.

I wish Battlefront no harm, quite the opposite frankly. But we all saw what a driving force competition can be when AMD finally released competitive CPUs. I am no liberalist when it comes to economics but Jesus did we all prosper from that competition. Just the kick in the *** Intel needed so badly. This only translates roughly to the video game sector, especially the wargaming niche, but a recent example would be the release of Regiments and it seems to have exerted at least some pressure on the developers of Warno. At the end of the day, I can't say if Combat Mission can be rivaled in the foreseeable future. Despite its apparent dated-ness, CM still has a 25 year long headstart.
All that being said, I remembered a post from Reddit from last year. Apparently the guy is still working on it. And apparently the it's also a guy working from his garage, hahaha.

I hope that this is taken in the spirit in which it is meant - CM may just need a reasonable competitor in order to push the series forward.
We all enjoy and appreciate the effort that is put in by BF. We would not be here otherwise. It is unfortunate however that CM is resigned to years of semi-releases and updates rather than the great leaps forward that I think we would all appreciate.
The gulf in the trajectory between OpenGL and DirectX have been there for all to see for decades now. Unfortunately it doesn't really hold water to say that it's a surprise that development is limited by not taking a decision to re-engineer the engine in DirectX years ago.
The new modules, battle packs etc are all well and good, as are the steam releases, but I can't think that I am in a minority who would sacrifice significant releases for a period for the knowledge that a new engine was being created, with current technology, which would allow an even more realistic experience. Much less talented game designers are out there creating games which, given the 'CM Treatment' would solve a lot of the on-going issues which cause issues with the current experience.  I realise BF aren't a tripe A developer, but it's not as though we see a new release every year anyway. And they have moved to a different engine before.
At the moment the competition is either too 'gamey' such a Regiments for example; or like Mius Front, has a UI which is totally unintuitive. Both things which CM excels at. Then we have Squad Battles by John Tiller for example which are great games but very abstracted given they are trying to emulate Squad Leader. Even Second Front which I had high hopes for looks like a cartoon and I can't take it seriously.
Anyway - I'm going to keep playing the games because there's nothing better, and therefore little incentive to update the system. Perhaps I'm part of the problem.
