Time for a Tips And Tactics Forum?
Ranger33 replied to Mord's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Don't understand why this seems to be controversial. This is the flagship game of this website, why can't it have one more subforum? -
ye olde "In Command" lines...
Ranger33 replied to Bartokomus's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Still can't see why this is such a big deal. Click HQ, units under it's command light up. Simple as that. Much more elegant than having lines all over the place, and gives you the exact same information. I've never had problems with units being out of contact. Just keep them within a reasonable distance of their HQ (game is based on reality, use your imagination here) and they will always be in contact. -
I agree, it seems the "AI" basically consists of going from point A to point B most of the time. A good map designer can overcome this to some extent in a scenario, but it really shows in the QB's.

RT player here. I appreciate WeGo and enjoyed it with CMx1 but just can't go back to it. In single player you can still pause, which makes any size of battle manageable. In MP it adds an extra layer of tension, you never know when a platoon of infantry will pop out of nowhere.

Was just playing Starcraft 2 and thinking how amazing that Battle.net setup would be with CMBN. Leagues, ladders, match history, matchmaking, stats, replays, all neatly organized. A pipe dream I know, but it would be awesome. Edit: Playing SC2 after a week of CMBN is not a good idea, I have discovered.

Where can I buy the game?

Ah, well, get with the times I say! -
Is there a Facebook page for CMBN?
Ranger33 replied to bobo's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Example: I like CMBN. Yes, it appears "like" is a verb. Who knew?! -
Very nice, the default grass is okay, but borders on neon green when compared to reality.

Where can I buy the game?
Ranger33 replied to DLaurier's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Going to a store to buy a PC game is pretty hit or miss anyway. Unless you are looking for a Blizzard game or The Sims its pretty much a toss-up whether they will have what you are looking for. Just get the digital + box option and you can be playing today with a physical copy in the mail. The download is pretty small, 1.3 GB or so, even if your connection sucks that really isn't too bad. I've downloaded far bigger over a 56K, way back when. -
My vote would go to Cold War gone hot, 1980s. Failing that, I think we would all prefer to see the sides fairly equal regardless of the setting.

Three campaigns not enough for you?
Ranger33 replied to Field Marshal Blücher's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Just finished it, without spoiling anything I will say the ending is quite satisfying. I love how units that carry over in campaign missions retain their kill counts, some of my squads really racked up a high score. Overall not too difficult of a campaign, I only lost 5-6 guys on each mission, but it was highly enjoyable and I loved the small unit tactics. Hope to see some more stuff like this. -
Plenty of mainstream sites and magazines praised the CMx1 games and gave them awards and very high (9/10) ratings. CMSF received harsh reviews from all of these places, but it deserved it at release. CMBN is a high quality game and right now it is getting zero press.

Units in buildings-spotting
Ranger33 replied to raz_atoth's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Try using the "Face" command to have them move closer to the windows. Don't know why they can see out the other side though. -
Three campaigns not enough for you?

Played through a few more missions, loving it so far. The difficulty is just right, requiring some finesse and careful positioning but very rewarding when you get your guys in the right spots and unleash on every German in sight. The best thing is how we have meaningful choices between missions and plenty of flexibility in the missions themselves. -
I can't confirm but I'm pretty sure they will be in the first module with the Commonwealth forces.

Any official reviews yet?
Ranger33 replied to massive1974's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
You guys have a real gem here, I want to see it out there getting praised! I probably never would have purchased CMBB (my first CM game) if not for the glowing review in PC Gamer. -
A salute to all the modders of CMBN!
Ranger33 replied to Aragorn2002's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
I would definitely recommend Vein's mods for special effects and sound, really gives the battles some needed "oomph." I also grabbed most of the user made scenarios, very good stuff so far, keep it coming! -

Very nice, I was hoping for a dedicated Airborne D-Day campaign. Will give this a go tomorrow, sounds very interesting. Edit: Couldn't wait so I played the first mission, total victory with no losses and limited ammo consumption. A little crawling goes a long way on that one. I really like how you give us a meaningful choice on how to proceed in the next mission, something I hope to see in other campaigns (where applicable). -
I would rather see a proper train station building (nothing fancy, just like a platform and building) which as I understand it is currently not available. Some of my favorite levels in Red Orchestra / Darkest Hour involve fighting over train stations. I suppose such a thing can be easily abstracted with regular buildings, but would look better with the real deal.

Got mine, very nice, can't wait to fill it up with modules. I rarely get boxed games but this was an exception that was definitely worth it. Much better than the CMSF one, which I might be biased against since it had been halfway destroyed in the mail, although the disk was okay. I had never had that happen before and took it as a bad omen, then lo and behold CMSF was just as broken as its packaging. I actually wouldn't mind buying a case like this for CMSF + modules to replace the generic cd cases they are in currently, but I suppose that won't be happening.

Making CM:BN more like CMx1-mods?
Ranger33 replied to Lt Bull's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Was going to rant a little about you old fogies and your stuck in the past ways but I'll hold my tongue and just encourage you to keep playing. A few weeks/months from now you might think "I'll boot up CMBB/CMAK" and discover that it is now unplayable and archaic in every way. That's what happened to me after a couple months of CMSF (after the patches). Edit: I held out on Civ 5 until a couple weeks ago but I'm glad I finally caved and bought it. It does lack a bit of complexity from the old games, but overall I find it far more enjoyable than the previous versions. When I want complex I play Victoria 2 or EU3, when I want colorful fun I play Civ 5/TW series. When I want tactical I play CMx2 -
They may be beefy, but that does not make them invulnerable. Especially when we are talking about rounds intended to knock out tanks and fortified positions.

This isn't a huge deal for me, but it would be nice if trees would be destroyed after taking a certain (or somewhat variable) amount of damage. I don't think anyone here would be looking for an elaborate visual, just cut the tree in half (with a sound effect and puff of dust or something) and make it no longer block fire. Really this issue is more annoying than anything, but every now and then things will line up just right and a tank will fire half a dozen rounds into a single tree with no effect.

Floating icons vs colored bases
Ranger33 replied to eciesse's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Maybe it's just because I played CMSF a lot before this, but I have no problem linking the icons to where the unit actually is. There is the occasional case where half the team gets separated because of suppression and the icon floats in the middle, which always throws me off, but it's rare. I think the bases are probably floating higher because of all the trees and bocage in CMBN, in CMSF most of the terrain was either open or urban, closer icons made sense. -
I played QB yesterday where my company XO could not call in on map mortars, but my platoon HQs could, is that how it is supposed to be? Seems like the XO team should at least be able to perform that function.
