  1. Pretty intense contrast. I like the picture of the man today wearing a vacation pack over his shoulder while the soldiers back then had a gun over their shoulders.
  2. Challenge accepted. I made the hexes quickly to work with as I made the module (I needed something to work with, heck I could have sketched them, but I'm not a masochist). I can definitely improve upon them, although most wargames aren't always going to look pretty. This is pretty much my beta of the module. I'm tempted to go in and use the PzC hex artwork, but I think I'd like to keep the hex artwork specific to the actual maps in Combat Mission. Since you're familiar with Vassal, would you mind if I shared the current state of the module with you? Interested in some feedback besides the map artwork.
  3. Thanks choppinlt and kohlenklau! Glad to see other projects going on. Couldn't help but try my hand at the Vassal Program. I've been working on it for about two days creating the actual images, the wargaming system, and programming the module to reflect it. Overall, it takes a fair bit of time to do the research of a particular scenario/battle (I chose a semi-historical conflict with the Gela counterattack between the US 1st Inf Div against the German HG Division). Creating the images and map was next, although I had some help using the Combat Mission briefing counters). Next I created a system that could be used that ties in with the actual combat to be played out in Combat Mission, such as units suffering or gaining motivation and fitness after a battle. Losses are tracked on a counter unit in the wargame by flipping them (multiple flip steps to a counter). So I could keep track of a company or battalion's troop level by starting at 100% and flipping the counter to 80%, 60%, etc. I just need to type up the rules and I can post it. I intend on playing this with a friend; and hopefully it runs smoothly and fun! If so, I think I could make other scenario battles.
  4. I was a little intimidated to set something up in Vassal, but I gave it a try. This looks pretty straightforward to use, although the Youtube tutorial videos help a lot. I'm working on a Gela counterattack scenario; division vs division as a starter. Thankfully I know a bit of Photoshop so it wasn't too hard to put a map together, and I've used the Combat Mission briefing counters to make counters. Having fun with it so far, and will hopefully be a good platform to use with Combat Mission.
  5. Is PzC used because all of the homework of research is done in that game along with scenarios? Has anyone tried doing the same using Cyberboard or Vassal (both are free).
  6. I know exactly how you feel. I have a friend who got this game despite careful consideration through reviews and looking at the worthy price. He is hooked!
  7. Stackpole Books has some great books I've come across. A few that come to mind are: Battle of the Bulge (Volumes 1-3) Kampfgruppe Peiper at the Battle of the Bulge Leadership in the U.S. Army's Greatest Battle Generals of the Bulge
  8. Oh nice. Never thought about this. I always had them as the escort for the CO.
  9. Something I found really interesting in the movie was when the column of Germans was singing while marching down the road. I thought it was a bit of a stretch in the movie, and thought there would be more sound discipline than that during the war. However, I'm reading about KG Peiper, and there is mention from American units spotting a column of Germans marching into a town while singing for everyone to hear and see.
  10. Steam is providing a new feature with their service that allows players to broadcast the games they play, similar to Twitch. This also allows players to stream non-Steam games. I'd be really interested to see players doing a live broadcast of CM. I think it would be an interesting way for players to come together, whether on Steam or Twitch, and chat during those live broadcasts. What are your thoughts?
  11. Great news! Looking forward to this one in particular. I'm just in the middle of reading Stackpole Book's Kampfgruppe Peiper at the Battle of the Bulge.
  12. Just saw the movie and wow was that dark. Even the non-combat scenes. Visual effects were great, and while there is a lot to nitpick, I think the movie did a good job of depicting the worst that war brings out in people.
  13. I would buy everything up to date in a heart beat!
  14. I actually miss that data being displayed. It was somewhat educational, and I appreciated the work the team did to make that information available. I'm fine without it as I play CMx2, but it was interesting "fluff" while playing the game.
  15. I have to applaud you and the team for the amazing work; and I don't even own GL yet! I'm going to purchase this after my semester is over and download this right away, and do my best to make some scenarios (I've played GMT's Ardennes '44 more than I'd like to mention).
  16. I have to agree that sometimes this is one of my gripes; it is definitely not a game breaker but it is something that I will have to set some time aside for studying my units, possible plans of action, contingencies, etc. This can be the most in depth part of playing a game that can lead to rewarding results.
  17. I don't know if this is a common problem, but depending on mods and battle size I will regularly wait at the 29% load point. This usually makes me anxious in a PBEM when I know there is a good chance I will either lose some armor and infantry or when this will be the turning point in the battle. I couldn't help but draw some of Bill Mauldin's characters in this situation.
  18. I'm the pbem opponent. Thanks for explaining this to StickNRdr guys; I didn't explain it well. I tend to take for granted that there are small nuances about this game and not everything is intuitive. It is nice to encourage the new CM gamers here.
  19. I may be crazy for doing this, but I generated a CMAK map and took a screenshot of it (the map editor screen) to use as a map overlay in the CMFI map editor. It wasn't too shabby working with it as a reference, although it still required me to ensure that the elevation was accurate enough. Friend and I use to map generate the heck out of CMAK despite good or bad maps coming up, but we had fun with it nonetheless.
  20. I think the release and update list looks great, but I can only hope the "something nice" has something to do with FI as my personal hope.
  21. I love that CM series has some of the most dedicated fans. I am now 33 and I remember playing CMBO. I remember picking up the game at a store (yeah, I remember the game store days for PC games) after I lost an eBay auction to get the game. I was so frustrated losing the bid on eBay that I marched myself down to the store to get that game. One of the best gaming decisions I've ever made. BTW, a salute to all the veterans who have made a mention of their service on this thread.
  22. I would love to see a Tunisia mod. Some battles like Kasserine, Sidi bou Zid and Sbeitla would be neat to see.
