1. Shift+V will "hide" the vehicle while you select. The keyboard shortcuts are a must read in the manual, IMHO.
2. You can kill them - it's one of those "Mac thangs". Used to drive me crazy when setting up a new client's webhosting and I'd see a thumbs.db in the directory, because the programming language that I use (for TPG, others) uses .db as the database files.
3. "Windows protection error" at boot-up are caused by missing or corrupted VXD (virtual device drivers) that are being called by the system. Your best bet is to consult the Microsoft Knowledge Base for detailed information on steps you can perform to *try* and correct the problem. Here's a start: LINK 1 LINK 2 These can be tricky but can be cured without having to reformat, if you have the patience.
4. I may have a funny last name, but that's one thing I'll always be sure of: never confused with someone else of the same name. Neat story/info Mike. Are my condolences in order here?
5. Glad that worked! I just happened to recall seeing that same error in AVG anti-virus install and figured it was related. Come join us at The Proving Grounds if you're looking for opponents or for some new scenarios to play around with! (link below)
6. I've seen this before when installing AVG Anti-Virus - because of a missing CONFIG.NT or AUTOEXEC.NT. Do a search on your harddrive for AUTOEXEC.NT. If you locate it and it is not in your SYSTEM32 folder of your WINDOWS directory, copy it there. I.E., to c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ You can extract a copy from your WinXP/Win2k CD if you don't have it on your system anywhere. See LINK
7. I'll have to remember that should a turn come embedded like that again, thanks!
8. Sometimes I'll get the data for the turns embedded into the email instead of as an attachment when receiving turns from players using Yahoo! mail. This is in Eudora, I don't recall ever having that issue with Outlook Express, and it doesn't happen every time. It is a bit odd. I have to copy all that "garbage" and paste it into a plain text editor and then save it as the next turn, which is a PITA. I don't recall this happening for some time though. What email program do you use? Mac/Win?
9. I use UOSU, which was made for Ultima Online but works as a standalone. This will let you take a series of screenshots without having to alt-tab out to Paint or another program to paste the image in. It will save each capture to a folder of your choice in .jpg format. I've uploaded it HERE
10. The Reference area of The Proving Grounds has a number of links to historical maps that may be of use to you.
11. After 4 years (I have a low-mid 6-digit ICQ #), the "uh-oh" was getting old. Really, try Trillian. I was skeptical at first after using the ICQ interface for so long, but now am so glad that I did. Another nice feature - you don't have to click "Send" to send the message, just press enter when you're done typing. Oh, and Trillian does have it's own sounds for events, including incomming messages, and if you must, you can use the "uh-oh" from ICQ in your own custom theme.
12. Switch to Trillian (works with ICQ and others). I did a while back and it's so much better than the ICQ interface. No more "uh oh" sound either (yes, that's easy enough to disable, but still...)
13. I think he changed the reviews by adding a "Details" button to avoid giving away spoilers (even though most people put the spoiler warning anyways). Perhaps Keith could add a button near the top where the reviews start that is for "All Detailed Reviews" that would open as a pop-up.
14. You didn't play against me. I would of fell for it. By the way, you owe me a turn.
15. Now that's a picture that can be used for a Caption This picture contest....
16. You would have to screenshot your "lucky" roll to document it, which is all too easy to forge. And then those that would sit there hitting "refresh" to see if their 3 scenarios would come up would suck up bandwidth and server resources, causing a performance hit for the rest of us. Now, he could do a quick comparison on each load of the homepage and if the field str_Author (Keith's scenario author field name) is the same for all 3, then both he and the scenario's author receive an email of the "lucky roll". I don't see that happening though, personally.
17. There's an opponents forum here that you'll want to stop by and see what you can find. You'll also want to post your profile at The Proving Grounds - and when you find an opponent, grab one of the many scenarios that we're beta testing there and give a review. Link below.
18. "Yes! I said to dismantle it and then rebuild it piece by piece on flat ground!"
19. NOOOOooooo!!!! Not YAWN4CMx2* thread! *(Yet Another What Next For CMx2)
20. What that screenshot really looks like in Combat Mission World:
21. --crossposted-- I wanted to post a quick note here to help promote the new Design Tips section at TPG. There's some very good "articles" that have been posted there - OOB's, unit history's, map making tips, terrain element tips and more. I would think that it would be a very valuable resource to scenario designers. If you have a favorite tip, feel free to add it, or comment on an existing tip if you have something else to offer to it. TPG Scenario Design Tips
