  1. Try deleting the prefs file and restarting/resetting CM's resolution.
  2. OK, now this isn't really directed towards CMBO, but for CM2 mostly. OK, we all know that when it snows "lightly" and when thawing begins, the entire ground is not covered in snow. So my request is that in the new system there needs to be snow tiles where grass can bee seen through it for at least light snow conditions. Right now this could be achieved with a mod I'm sure. I even thought of using the "transparent pink" on snow tiles to see if that would work. But in CM2, we need dedicated light snow tiles. Also, the last time I checked, grass in the months of November through March wasn't green. (At least in NW Europe.) Now in Russia, it probably is longer than that, right? So a brownish grass needs to be coded into the game engine to where it will display in the winter months just as the winter trees do. Now I realize that this would incoporate several additional sets of grass and snow tiles, but big deal. As for programming code, it wouldn't take much more than it does to change the trees from season to season. Thanks for your consideration. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-17-2001).]
  3. OK, let me weigh in here. BTS is planning to make at least 3 more sequels. Work on the second one is starting to begin as we speak. CM2: "Barbarossa & Beyond" (Eastern Front, 1941-1945) CM3: "The Med" (Mediterranean Theater, 1941-1943) North Africa, Italy, Greece/Crete CM4: "Blitzkrieg" (Early War, 1939-1940) Poland, France Note: BTS is not your ordinary software company. CMBO was made by just two guys. They have recently hired two new guys--from this board, matter of fact. They have also dilligently provided continued support to make this great game even better towards perfection. They have released SIX official patches, one before anybody had the game and the last one was Publically Beta Tested for 5 weeks via 4 Beta patches prior to its "official" release. Each of these new games will feature an improvement of the features and entirely new TO&E and nationalities. These will not just be add-ons, but some effort will be made to up-date older versions to the new versions standard as to keep them under the same engine build.
  4. Michael, There are already some hi-res Sherman Fireflies out there. Go to CMHQ and check out Marco Bergman's Hi-Res British Sherman III, V, & Fireflies.
  5. Yeah, the vagueness of the hits at times is just another form of FOW. Now when you can't see the projectile is another form of FOW in which in that case, you don't know where the killing shot came from. AFVs will at times know who's shotting at them and that is represented by a yellow line while having that vehicle selected. If there is not yellow line and your vehicle gets hit, that is just another example of FOW. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
  6. Which tank fires first depends soaly on Crew Experience and the ROF of the vehicle. Nothing else. I am pretty sure that CM doesn't model the time delay in "switching" between HE and AP, Smoke, Tungsten, etc. I could be wrong though, but I know there is not a "visual" indication of the loaders having to switch between ammo types. Hetzers and Hummels have a very slow rate of fire, for example. PzIIL's (Lynx's) have a high rate of fire, but of course you're talking about a 20mm auto-cannon there. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-17-2001).]
  7. Here is an exerpt from TGN's Theater of Operations which uses the same Depot for their TOAW scenarios: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Depot Problems... Over the last few weeks, our scenario depots have been slow and unresponsive. This problem developed gradually and was determined to be a traffic-related issue. We simply have too many people accessing too many depots for the current server to handle. Our initial response was to optimize the code as much as possible, which did provide some additional performance and delay the inevitable. However, it is now clear that the depots need some new hardware. Until that hardware arrives and is configured, please be as patient as possible. Just as it's difficult to get a list of new scenarios, it's also difficult for administrators to approve scenarios or edit them. We hope to have a resolution for this problem soon.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
  8. The servers running the whole TGN Scenario Depot are out-of-date or somefink. Here's a little exerpt from TGN's Theater of Operations website for TOAW which uses the same servers. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Depot Problems... 9. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Henri: On the CMHQ chat forum, some knowledgeable people said that if you replay a movie when playing against the AI, you can get different results, because the results are calculated on the fly during the movie.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> HUH??? What were these people smokin'? The "movie" is calculated when the little blue bar goes across the screen at the bottom. It is *NOT* calculated on the fly. Let me know what these people were smokin' and get me some! The movie has *never* been calculated on the fly during playback. So in turn, you can watch a movie as many times as you like and you will see the same thing over and over again. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Now if the first people are correct, what is to prevent a player who receives a movie from replaying the file until he gets a better result before sending it back?I understand how the 4-mailing thing prevents a player from changing his MOVES after watching the result, but it doesn't prevent the first player who gets the movie from reloading the file and replaying the movie.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> There was an bug in PBEM game movies, I believe, that would ommit things that happened after the 60 seconds were over, such as artillery shells like 'argie' suggested when one would rewind the movie several times. However this has been fixed with the latest patch. It was actually fixed with the v1.1b23 patch previously. So now, no matter how many times you watch a movie of any type, the results will be the same. [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-16-2001).]
  10. Good point, I assume you're talking about Marco Bergman's and Francesco's work. Yeah some of their markings are a bit too clean. But there's not a whole lot the end user can do if they are not mod inclined.
  11. The problem is that the hardware running the whole TGN scenario depot is not up to the task. TGN host a scenario depot for several different games and the problem is that the server is not up to handling the demand. IIRC, they are looking into updating the servers or something to allow better access.
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by David Aitken: Maximus wrote: > I mean people (not you in general) complain about the graphic quality of CM and then there's nice hi-res textures out there and then people don't use them. I play CM at the highest resolution my monitor supports, which happens to be about the maximum the game will run smoothly at with my graphics card (1600x1200). Therefore I'm reluctant to install any high resolution bitmaps for fear of slowing the frame rate. I think these modifications are very impressive, but considering I don't usually spend much time closely examining my tanks and buildings, I don't really feel they're necessary. It just so happens that CM allows you to zoom in and take a better look at things. I think fancy textures are more appropriate to the kind of games you play at low resolution, because you tend to get closer to them in that environment. That's just off the top of my head – I wouldn't hesitate to gorge CM on these modifications if I had framerate to spare. Once I get a G4 maybe... =) David<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Hmmm, strange twist on the arguement there David--"I play CM in 1600x1200 resolution and won't install hi-res mods for fear of frame rate drop." Nothing personal, but I don't buy it. I thought that people who run in such high resolutions like better detail? So you run in high res, but use low-res textures, what's the use? The game is better in a lower res but with high res textures, trust me. As far as frame-rate drop. Com'on, I don't believe that for a second. If you would just back off the desktop resolution by one notch, you could install hi-res mods with little or no frame-rate hit. If there was a trade-off between better textures and a higher res desktop, I'd pick the better textures. You get more bang for your buck there. And to say you don't spend much time examining your tanks and other surroundings, hell you're missing the best part of the game, IMO. If you play CM in view #4 (or whatever you do) all the time, you might as well go play an isometric wargame like West Front. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by David Aitken: If you people don't stop producing impressive textures, I might have to start using them.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I don't understand this argument. I mean people (not you in general) complain about the graphic quality of CM and then there's nice hi-res textures out there and then people don't use them. Sounds like the whole hull-rotation issue. I just don't get it. It's like, "GEE, I would really like CM to look better, I hear there are really nice hi-res (Sherman) textures out there, but I don't think I'll use them." I just don't get it!
  14. In CM's terms, if the main gun is damaged, then it is *assumed* that the coaxial gun has been damaged too since they are both mounted in the same mantlet. Of course, in reality this may not be the case, but in CM's list of abstractions, this is how it works. Now for a tank to still use, its hull mounted MG, of course it still has to have ammo. Now if my memory serves, the hull MGs carry a fraction of the ammo that the coaxial MGs carry, so in most cases, this ammo has probably been used up already. So in this case, I agree with massimorocca. I'd rather save the points of the AFV by withdrawing it off the battlefield than to leave it out there as a mobile potential coffin. As for the "Hunt" arguments, all of those opinions/facts have been mentioned already. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by fubart: Bruno, Thanks for taking time to reply. I'm wondering why the insistence on 256RAM? My computer literacy is primeval.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Well considering a 128MB DIMM now is only like $35 or so. Why not add another? PriceWatch.com has 256MB PC-133 SDRAMM chips at around $70. That's what I'm gonna get when I upgrade shortly. [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-15-2001).]
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Krono: I went a few months without playing CM and uninstalled it. With news of the 1.1 patch, Ive decided to install it again but cant find any patch except for v1.1 Currently Im running 1.02 and I assume in order to get ALL the fixes in between 1.02 and 1.1, Id need to find the other patches. So where are they, and do I even need to have them at all, or can I just DL v1.1 and it incorporates everything in between? Thanks for anyones help.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Each patch was just an extension of the previous patch. In other words, the newer patch had everything in them as older patches plus the fixes. Well actually, it's not quite like that. Each new patch was a brand new exe file that was the latest build. So since you haven't been around for a while, you're probably unawares of the Public Beta Test BTS did for the past 5 weeks. Before releasing the final v1.1 patch, BTS released 4 beta patches for anyone that chose to could d/l and use to test them out for the final release. (But don't even go there, whole n'ther story there you don't even wanna know about) But what is available in the v1.1 patch is the TCP/IP mode to where you can play someone else in realtime over an internet connection and all you need is the other person's IP address or vice versa.
  17. Thanks, I mainly asked this because I just watched a Desert Storm special on the History Channel and the TOAW system was the only game system that I thought of that would possibly have Desert Storm included. I think my local On Cue store has a copy of the Century of Warfare version. I just may pick it up next week. I still have about $20 in gift credit left for that store. Is there a site with user-made scenarios out there? ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
  18. I know some of you have played The Operational Art of War series, especially the Century of Warfare version, so my question is, is this game worth getting for an operational level wargame for anything such as for ****s & giggles? Does the modern version have Desert Storm scenarios, etc? ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-14-2001).]
  19. Got some pink spots around the front wheels.
  20. Dogface has it correct. The more troops and the more complex the orders (and potential action), the longer it takes for the computer to calculate the turn. Hi-res mods, don't really have an impact on turn calculations. That is more to do with video card memory. As for foamy's system. Another 128 MB wouldn't hurt. Memory is dirt cheap now. You can get another 128 MB for about $35. If your Voodoo 3 is only 16 MB, then there's another bottleneck in framerate. With a decent system like you got, you need to look into getting a Geforce 2 card, probably a 64 MB version. Throw away that 2 year old Voodoo 3 and get you a new card.
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mirage2k: I obviously can't speak for Oddball, but I think that he wants the option for a human player (or computer, if the "stick to scenario default" option is disabled) to move the guns if desired. That is the problem. -Andrew<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I disagree. If you reread his initial post, it sounds like he wants to keep the guns in the same place, ie padlock them. The stick to scenario default option is a little fuzzy if you ask me. I think it really only applies if you play the AI when you want the setup to remain historical.
  22. Again, a request for a more micro-managing command. And BTS doesn't want this. They've said it from day one. The current balance of commands have been labored over for quite some time and deemed sufficient, any more and the micro-managing get's outta hand. You've got to realize that the way it currently stands *ALLOWS* each unit to have it's own personality. Which I think is cool, personally. You start adding all this micro-management stuff into the game and you start defeating the purpose of the Tac-AI, then you might as well go play Ground Control or somefink.
  23. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by M Hofbauer: I fail to see the problem....? like you found out yourself, padlock 'em and voilá. ?!?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I agree, I don't either. If you padlock'em, they ain't movin'. Period. Padlock the guns, and nothing else. I fail to see the problem.
  24. Well considering most documentaries of such are usually around $130 or more. $100 ain't that bad. Are these 1-hour parts or what?
