1. Oh god, not this topic again. Kinda reminds me of the "FOW map" threads from pre Gold Demo days where some people wanted the map to be dynamic and shrouded like in RTS games where objects, just as bridges, woods, etc would be placed on the field in ghostly positions and then revealed truthfully when the player advanced far enough. But a view lock while creating scenarios? How in the hell would that work? I mean you've got your map overview screen when placing objects, etc. What would a locked view accomplish here?
2. Well actually, you'll need the v1.05 patch first. Then get the v1.1b24 Beta patch. The final v1.1 patch won't require the game to be v1.05 before patching. As for mods, why wouldn't you? That's like saying I've got a fixer-up house here, it looks alright, but it sure could use a coat of paint, but I think I won't. CM's structure allows everything to be mooded, graphically and soundly. I don't think I use a dozen of the original textures. Everything else has been modded to look much better than the originals. First grab the MDMP (Mad Dog Mod Packs) they include a few vehicles and uniforms that aren't available outside the packs. Then for other vehicles and stuff get what you like. There's a lot of cool hi-res mods out there that will drastically change the quality of the US and UK Shermans. But for a MASSIVE makeover, grab DD's Terrain mods and Panzertruppen's buildings. These will totally improve the over-all look of the game terrain wise.
3. Benny, the new Squad Leader is simply a rehashed game with the same engine as the game known as Soldiers at War that came out about 4 years ago. It actually should have been called "Soldiers at War 2". How Hasbro put the name Squad Leader on this piece of **** game is beyond most of us here in the CM community. Another note on the game by my uncle, he said the interface was clunky as all hell. He said you had to click here and there, here and there, just to get your guy to move.
4. Being a Has-blow product, they usually don't make demos, otherwise people would actually know had bad their games are before they waste their money on them. Seriously Benny, you don't want to waste your time...er, play that game. My uncle bought it and he says it's horrible. I said, "Yeah I know". He said, "What do you mean, you know." I said, "Becuase I did my homework on it." You know the Internet is wonderful when it comes to researching games. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
5.
quote:
Originally posted by Guy w/gun: I think you missed my point. Would a crew just sit there with there fingers in their asses? Simple example. Regular Tank is ordered to move forward 100 meters. At 50 meters you decide to give the tank new orders: reverse back 25 meters. What does the tank do? It stops dead cold...doesn't continue forward...waits 13 seconds, then proceeds to reverse. Im not saying this is good or bad, I'm just asking if this is realistic.

I think you don't quite understand the difference between "white" waypoints and "red" waypoints. Agreed, it's a little gamey when plotting moves, but that's how the system works. A white waypoint is one that is currently been plotted that same turn. A unit will follow that series of waypoints without stopping. A red waypoint is one that had been plotted on a previous turn. Once the unit reaches the LAST red waypoint. It stops. Now if you add waypoints too it on following turns, the unit will still stop at the LAST red waypoint and wait its "command delay" before continuing. However, you may change the move TYPE of any red waypoint in later rounds by clicking on it and hitting the SPACE BAR. So say for instance, you have a Sherman on a HUNT movement, and it sees a Tiger, but you want it to move FAST out of LOS of the TIGER. If you have waypoints plotted past the Tiger and the game turn ends. On the next turn, you can change the HUNT waypoints to FAST waypoints and then the Sherman will automatically go into FAST mode and it will not stop for its command delay. WHATEVER you do, DO NOT hit HALT, for this will evoke its normal command delay before moving again. This information is in the manual on page 36 under EDITING WAYPOINTS. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
6. Poolman, you know you *can* save games don't ya? [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-07-2001).]
7. Why would you wanna do that? That game blows BIG chunks.
8. Maybe because UK snipers couldn't hit the continent of Europe when standing in France.
9. Well let me just say that, each and every unit in CM has been thoroughly researched historically down to its ground pressure psi, sillouette, engine HP, armor thickness and slope for several armor plates, muzzle velocities, blast radiai, etc. This is what makes CM very accurate in its physics. So then for some "3rd Party" to do up a new 3D model and texture for a new unit will simply not work. What I'm trying to say is there are real world physics at work here, not made up stuff like in Total Annihilation. Besides you'll probably get your Australian stuff in CM3: The Mediterranean Theater. 10. Maybe you should put your X-Ray glasses back on. No really, are the mortars within C&C of the HQ you want that has LOS, or are they in C&C of a different HQ?
11.
quote:
Originally posted by Silver Fox: Oops! Carriers at War is much earlier than the 90's.

No it's not. I didn't get my first 386-33 until Dec. '91 and Carriers at War came out after that. I remember I got that game. It was a pretty cool game, really. Also the V for Vicotry series was great. My buddy and I played a hot-seat game of Veli Lukiye (sp?) that we talked about years later where he had his Russians surrounding the city *until* my SS reinforcements showed up and decimated entire stacks of Russian troops. I had a good laugh everytime we brought that up. The Gold-Sword-Juno beach version was great also. I also liked the World at War series also. The Operation Crusader game was pretty good. The original Steel Panthers was a great game for its day. SPII was good too, but I lost interest in that series when Talonsoft's East Front came out. Better Isometric 3D rather than top-down 2D. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
12. Comon' I need to know something before I screw up my system.
13. I just got a mesage saying that they're having trouble obtaining a copy from the supplier and that my order will be delayed a week or two. Damn, I'll probably get my Dune tapes before I get the damn book!
14. I have a Diamond Viper V770 32MB TNT2 Ultra video card and I have recently d/l'ed the Detonator 3 drivers. My question is, how do I go about installing them and can I just install them over my current 4.12.01.0368 drivers? I have been using the last official Diamond driver update from Feb. 2000. I have never used "generic drivers" from Nvidia or anything. But from what I've read about reviews of these Detonator drivers is that they are like LiveWare drivers for SBLive sound cards where these drivers will work for any Nvidia card on the market. I did a search on them and got some info on the Detonator 2 drivers from back in June or so. Any feedback would be appreciated before I install them. Thanks ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
15. OK, I have a Diamond Viper V770 TNT2 Ultra video card, I've been running the latest Diamond driver for the card that came out in Feb 2000. I just downloaded the Detonator 3 drivers of which said that its compatible and all that and that it supposedly increases performance. Now the question is, is it easy to install or does it require an uninstalling of the old drivers? and does it include any tweaking tools? ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
16. Well, I originally stumbled upon CM in the Fall of '99. Saw one of those infamous, "Battalion is ready! Are you?" banners and I clicked on it. That brought me to battlefront.com but at that time, CM was still in it's Alpha days, but nearing Beta. Anyway, the graphics at that time didn't grab me at all. Besides that was about the time Hidden & Dangerous came out and I, stupidly, compared CM's graphics to H&D, a FPS-type game. Needless to say, I wasn't impressed. Well right after the Y2K fiasco, I clicked on the same ol' banner again from a TGN site and I then discovered that the Beta Demo was out. I had never downloaded a demo before, and I said, "Hey, what the hell." and I downloaded the 30MB demo. This was one of those late night things. Then the next day, I installed it and fired up, "Last Defense" and then I saw the tracers fly and I said, "Whoah, this is freakin' awesome!" So I immdediately fired up the internet connection, went to battlefront.com and placed my order in January, 2000. Became a member of this board originally as "Wehrmacht", but the board crashed soon after that and I lost that name. I then chose "Ol' Blood & Guts" with the obvious password of "patton". Then around May 2000, the board crased again about the same time the "Refreshing Monkeys" hit the board waiting for the Gold Demo release. I tried posting while it was down and I lost my "OBG" name and since that was about the time the movie, "Gladiator" was showing, so I re-registered as "Maximus", which was Russel Crowe's character name in the film. So moral of this story is, don't try to post while the board is down or the system will lose your registration when it tries to increase your posting number. LOL! Not really, but I'm coming up on my 1-year Anniversary pretty soon. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-06-2001).]
17. I agree with Commissar, I have Shogun also, well my buddy brought it over to me becasue it doesn't work with his video card, and I played it for a little while, but I got bored of it pretty quickly and deleted that 1 GB behemoth off my HDD. WOW! What a run-on sentence that was!
18. Well what PawBroon was trying to say is that you need to d/l and install v1.05 which is available here. You have to install this first. Then you need to grab the latest Beta Patch v1.1b24 which is available here. When the final v1.1 patch comes out, you won't have to install v1.05 first. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
19. Before we get this guy totally confused... Let me try to answer his questions. 1) Seizing up? Maybe be a driver conflict. But try downloading the v1.05 patch and then the v1.1b24 patch. 2)Clipping? I don't notice any clipping? . IDF, ALL 3D games have graphics clipping. There's no way around it. It's just a fact of life with 3D games. CM's graphics will clip all the time when they are close. You can even have an AFV clipping through a building. Can't be helped. But setting the unit scale down to "realistic" will help out some. The important thing to note here is that everything on the screen is just mearly a representation of what is in the computers memory. The graphics are just showing you what is going on in the b3est way they can. The internal calculations are a lot more precise. 3)You had the Whittman Tiger in your sights? IDF, this scenario is meant to be played *as* the Germans. But anyway, where those 3 other Tigers popped up is where the German reinforcement marker is. If you were there between turn 9 and 11, then yes, they will appear there suddenly. That's the way reinforcements appear. That's the way the game is coded. 4)Vehicle graphics appearing choppy and blurry? Yes the originals were. Since CM's release there have been MANY, MANY mods come out that replace about everything in the game. Yes everything, including the info panel at the bottom of the screen. Check out CMHQ's Mad Dog Mod Packs and 3rd Part Mod Section and Kump's CM Outpost for a slew of Mods that TOTALLY change the way CM looks. There are at least 10 mods alone for the Tiger. I highly suggest DD's Terrain mods and Panzertruppen's Buildings for starters. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
20. I just did a test of 8 JgPanthers vs 8 Sherman VC Fireflys. Result: 8 dead Fireflys to 2 dead JgPanthers. Test map: Gentle slopes, farmland, light tree coverage. All but 3 Shermans were toasted on the first turn. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
21. I think the community has already undergone the very such task in creating one. Someone is working on creating a unit database on how to use each unit based on what this very community has come up with as the pros-and-cons for each unit. Or just follow this board and learn. There has been more than a series of "Strategy Guides" worth of material on this board. Have a question concerning a tactic or unit, do a search on here and read what has been discussed about it. Best thing is that you get several people's opinions concerning whatver you're looking for, rather than just the opinion of a certain individual. ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
22. In light of the recent JgTiger thread, how's about a preference towards the JgPanther over the JgTiger for a highly armored german TD? I haven't done any tests, but I would assume the JgPanther is faster and a bit more nimble than the JgTiger. But then the arguement is why pick a JgPanther over a regular Panther? The JgPanther has an 88mm gun with better penetration values over the Panther's 75mm. The JgPanther has 55 degree sloped armor all the way up the front hull while the Panther only has it on its lower hull and not the turret, obviously. So any other ideas? ------------------ "Live by the sword, live a good LOOONG life!"-Minsc, BGII "Boo points, I punch."--Minsc, BGII
23. New wheat, new water, new marsh, new rough, new brush, old hedge/boccage.
24. I've got UK versions as well. Trying to decide how to ditribute them. Might send them to Kump again for a comparrison and then to matt for download.
25. Bump. Just got'em. They're great! Now all we need is some Cromwells and Churchills done up the same way. [This message has been edited by Maximus (edited 01-05-2001).]
