  1. Exactly... You can get cheap accounts with several providers that have good comnpletion... just have to make sure that these premium providers do not clip off binaries from text groups (or start or take over a dead binary group for CM stuff). Giganews is showing your posts just fine, though it looks like somefink happened to peering between giga and supernews last night as several files are incomplete... if I feel it had enough I'll post which parts are missing. Easily taken care of by uploading a thumnail... just like including a graphic on a website of what the file is... Seems like a best use of Gunny Bunny's folly I've heard in a while. While mgo is getting itself sorted out and Matt is too busy these days to update CMHQ the way it used to be, I see newsgroups as an excellent temporary storage area (though if it catches on we will have to start using a binary group or sysadmins will start getting pissed about the bloated text group vfull of files). Another nice thing about using newsgroups is that when someone remembers a mod from way back when and it's long gone, they usually come here and describe it... someone usually takes care of them pretty quick, but others might want a crack at it as well. If it's not up on one of the remaining sites, it can easily be uploaded to the newsgroup and anyone who wants to sample it can without making a thread here full of "me toos" requesting mailings. 2. THat's what I did... another option would be to just open the exe in winrar (or the compatible mac prog if you are so inclined) and grab individual files that way...
  3. Spoiled brat! In my day, we had to wait for idividual mods to come out. We didn't have the luxury in the old days (of 2000) of grabbing a half gig of mods and plop them all on. We had to make due with what we had!
  4. Why do you assume a covered position? Certainly of a unit's exposure is low, a hit proabability goew down.... in any event, A unit with binoculars to be able to pinpoint an enemy better at range. I also have experience with the game system in general that tells me that a lone gunman will have much better chances of doign anything by not being supressed... In general, my best luck with sharp shooters is between 300 & 500 m as they were designed to be used.
  5. WHy are you wasting shots with crack sharpshooters at 200m? HEll, you can get kills with any infantry units at 200m... The advantage is reaching out 500...600...800m and getting a nice kill on a HQ unit or a TC... or if you are very luck you might get a big gun arty spotter.
  6. Gary- Nice site... but all the links to mods seems to be broken. Found that your links are all to the cmbb dir and after some fiddleing found that they should point to the \mods dir beneath that... so what I see is: http://www.garykrockover.com/cmbb/Aussie_Jeff_1211new_barbedwire.zip and it should be: http://www.garykrockover.com/cmbb/mods/Aussie_Jeff_1211new_barbedwire.zip Nice site otherwise, good luck with it.
  7. Exactly.. I had a Pz III taken out by an SU 122 (I think) that was driving around killing buildings and found my little support popgun. Big fireball as you would imagine. Oddly, when I took out the SU with a 75/L48, dind't get a fireball.
  8. You could always load it into Sound REcorder (assuming we are talking Windows users here) and use the 'decrease volume' command.... IF you want a little more control, I would say Goldwave. IT's easy to use and you don't have to be a sound engineer to get good results from it (it's shareware, but it's full featured in it's demo mode.... just makes you restart the app after a certain number of functions done). IT'll allow you to rest volume to.. say.. 80% and see if that works better (I wouldn't cut sound more than that each pass as you might cut too much and have to backtrack).
  9. Yes, it does make a difference... How much you even notice it? That's debateable. I think that I can see the difference, but wouldn't pay much more for it (though if I had contracted for it and something slower was being installed, I'd whine about it). I would ultimately not worry about it (other than the money angle) unless I was putting togeather a fast machine (P4 2.4 or AthlonXP 2.1 or faster)... especially with 400mhz DDR ram out now. 10. Well, he did end up gridding three different ground types. PRevious hi-res grass types have weighed in at over 10 megs and since he has three, I can see the heftyness of the full on package. Hope someone comes forward with the space for the Captain (soemwhere with a fat pipe like CMHQ, obviously), his inspiration has been my favorite grass since it was introduced though other terrains have come and gone from my install of CMBO.
  11. FIrst game I bought was 3R... Didnt understand a thing and put it away and got Tactics ][ instead in 1977. First computer wargame? Computer Ambush.... or was it Castle Wolfenstein? Can't Remember.
  12. Tom- Glad to see you back in action. You site was always one that I looked through when grazing for mods. I see that you are still getting things put back together (lots of links seem to be problematic). I hope that when things settle a bit and you ahve some time, you will repeat the single most unique 'mod' of the CMBO days. Namely, CD Jewel case art. I have probably run off a dozen of them for gamers in my area who do not have access to good printers.
  13. Chiming in from Sacramento.... hands shaking with a terrible palsy. My mail peeps come around late afternoon, so maybe there will be a strea of illness staring (god willing) Tuesday here.
  14. 20mm AA does some weird things to people. I played a winter game of CMBO not too long ago and had a Churchie Croc lumbering through the snow and the only thing I had for it was a pair of 20mm flack shooters... so they opened up at about 500m and after about 20 hits got lucky and hurt the gun... a couple minutes later the crew bailed with nothing really wrong with the tank itself. PRrobably a safer place to be! But then again, that hammering had to be excruciating on the crew.
  15. I had some German bombers used against me as the Allies to devestating effect... But that was after the Allies were well on their way to folding. The German used them to shoo away Brit/US naval power as well as pound out entrenchments in the East as well as putting the coup de grace on a few units.. It should be noted that my opponent was Jollyguy, a well known proponent of airpower and he used about 4 bombers to compliment his ~10 airfleets.
  16. Ah yes, the supply center problem... I understand now, was enjoying the holiday a bit much if you get my drift... It does seem to be a problem. But then Rommel was well known for racing around in his big staff car... maybe HQ units should be that resilient as they do not represent all that many troops. What? For an army group sized staff maybe a couple hundred? As long as the radios hol out... I'm thinking in game terms here, of course it would be silly if they were enveloped with an adjacent combat unit and the combat unit were likewise refreshed.
  17. FWIW, I agree that the new system is not to my liking, I prefer the CMBO system as I was ready to go with it on day one. I'm definately going to get the game and can see that it's a case of getting used to the new way... Like I said, I prefer he old way especially the ability to move & pan at the same time. Probably my most used movement... then again, as a fps player, I'm probably used to moving that way. The thing that I really miss is the lack of backwards r's!
  18. Probably becasue it was sitting on a supply center.
  19. Until you hear it from them, I'd wait to judge them. You are right, it's a little much for what you said you said. Look at the comments about it here for an idea, but for what it's worth, from what Hubert has said, it was his idea in the first place and left it off the master by mistake... It was also his call to remove it AKIK becasue he agreed that it was unfair to add it in after release (and yes, becasue there was a big backlash against it)...
  20. Don't talk ****? Don't be an idiot. Oh wait, I see you're frm Bakersfield... guess you can't help it. [ August 22, 2002, 10:43 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
  21. You are the man, Hubert. THanks! I'm happy either way to play the game, but this makes it just that much better. Thanks again...
