  1. Well, that makes sense I guess. It's the first arguement that has. With the quickly coming ubiquity of PDA's (IMO), an Acrobat version no longer means a cartridge of inkjet ink to get the manual. I've been using my PDA for that kind of thing for a while now. While not everyone has one, I think that the day that most computer savvy folks (like gamers) is coming fairly soon.
  2. Anotherthing to add: Was recently going through the game with a new player and we started an Attack QB... I was describing the different point rations used to an Attack, Assault, and Probe and was suprised that the actual ratios were not listed in the manual.
  3. Buy them... and hope for the best. Since we are not dealing with a time of tight integration between ground and air forces, the presence of CAS units in game represents planes in the area hunting for targets of opprotunity. THey attack when and where they want... THey are a two edged sword. THey can completely destroy an enemy and make your work little more than mopping up... or they might just mis-ID YOU and drop on your positions (I guess everyone looks like ants to them). Then again, they might not show up at all!
  4. What is this "95 Rule" which I, a longtime veteran of this board (who lost his 3 digit member number in the Great Crash (which is spoken of now only in whispers) also never heard of until this thread?
  5. Why don't you take a look at what your units current movement orders are at a glance? Simply use the [shift]-P command to look at all movement paths. Take a look at what your men are plotted to do. The one suggestion that you somehow gave a rotate command after an inadvertant group select makes sense.
  6. Nice set of ideas, though I would make the following suggestion. Battlefield intel is vital and has been pricticed for quite some time. I would say that for a majority of units spotted at distance, you idea is very good, But the existing system has it's points too when a unit is seen close up and identified. In those cases, having the last seen marker disappear when an identified unit pops up in a position that a positive id can be made (wheater that's a tank with specific markings, or a platoon of men with the paltoon sgt. with the weird bloodstain the shape of Rhode Island on it or whatever).
  7. I have no problems with the full slate (almost) of all hotfixes. You might try backing some off. Since MS decided not to tell us the install date of the hotfixes, why not try to just remove them in reverse order. I think that the oldest is the highest number. You can remove them from the add\remove programs applet in the Control Panel.... not sure what it's called like with the XP view as I use Classic View (what, I'm going to waste thousandsof dollars worth of training to learn a new view? NO!). back them off one at a time and try connecting. If you need a guinea pig to work with, I'd be happy to help, check my profils for my ICQ.
  8. You might want to make sure that your settings are set for 4 speakers in the Audio HQ speaker applet that should be loaded if you have the latest SB drivers. It's an annoyance that I order not to run at startup, but those settings do adjust the soundcard settings after startup (as in... after the system sound applet initializes), so make sure that the speaker settings in Audio HQ are set for quad. If it's not installed, then... never mind...
  9. You may have to add a couple directories under your \cmbo directory: \PBEM \Saved Games [ April 05, 2002, 03:39 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
  10. Odd odd odd.... can you use the shaw webmail service? https://webmail.shaw.ca/ If you can, the problem is with your system somewhere. Lemme ask... are you using one ofthose off the shelf hardware 'routers?' If so have you flashed it recently? If not, then you have definitive proof that there's something up with your mail server and you should be able to use that as proof positive to make your ISP tech support do some real checking on your account.
  11. Try resetting your user name and password in Outlook Express... perhaps your user info or other settings has become corrupt at some point. THat happens to me every now and again (I do NOT use IE, but the password box uses windows encryption schemes and the pw becomes hosed now and again (rare, but it happens)... retype the pw and all is well again.). If that fails, maybe something's up with OE itself... try installing a third party mail prog and configure it and see what happens (Eudora, etc.). Also, make sure that your email is workign right (yeah yeah, your ISP's tech support said all was well... they could be wrong).. does you ISP provide a web based mail reader? If so, you might gove that a shot and see if it deliveres and sends mail. All that pre-supposes that you cannot send mail at all. You say you can't send with attachments... can you send at all? How about if you send a very small attachment? [ April 04, 2002, 02:34 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
  12. THis what you were looking for? YOu need to adjust the url. you put the http prefix in twice. http://http://www.freepicturehosting.com/fphview.asp?id=115993 YOu wanted to make it http://www.freepicturehosting.com/fphview.asp?id=115993 But to see it, use the url to the actual file: http://www.freepicturehosting.com/g/115993_1.jpg That'll work fine... NIce shot, by the way.... BUt what I really want to know is how did you keep a flame thrower alive with all the krauts around? [ March 30, 2002, 09:07 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
  13. Game worked the way it's supposed to. Minimum range for mortars is 100m. When playing in the rain, use your strongest HQ to hopeufully target things far enough away for the mortars to bring under fire (they seem to get a little twitchy about pointing their tubes straight up) and yet stay in control of the Mortar men. 14. Originaly used an Alps MD-5000 and bumped Tom's cover to 600dpi and printed the stuff up on CD Stomper precut jewelbox paper. They have templates avaialble for printing for a bunch of different popular programs (Photoshop, Word, Draw, etc.) that fit their paper perfectly. Recently reprinted for a friend on my new cheapie printer Lexmark Z-52. Looks great.
  15. IT's embedded in the video. The other posts that people are making about editing file and creating new ones and wathcing bit rates are all well and good, but you have to change the prefernce for the vid first. If the video plays, you get the video music. If you bypass the music, then 00005010.wav plays instead. To set that preference, hold down the left shift key while launching the game (at least on PC.. don't know of the command is differnet on Mac).
  16. I've read accounts of this as well, though a couple eyars ago, I argued this point with Fionn. He pointed out that no matter what first hand accounts might say, there's no denying that the armor on the floors Tigers IS proof of .50 fire... even 8 of them, especially after spending much of it's kinetic energy on he ground. What is easily beleivable is that these .50's cause damage to tread and roadwheel and drive train causing smoking and crew bailing... As far as the P-47 pilots are concerned, they killed the tank. 17. Now where did the CM Borg go to? Sounds like an assimilation ready to be made.
  18. Tom- Just starting a QB in the snow... already did the setup and then applied you new mod and it improves the look of the battelfield 100%... also helps too understand elevations at a glance... alot! Thanks. I also like the updated treebases. Much betterthan the 'speckled' solution offered before. Thanks again! I see why you like it... I guess I like the solid bases as it's more... erm.. modular? Also, I know what you are talking about losing your number. My 1012 is still pretty respecable, but before the great crash of '99 I was coming in in the 500's or so.
  19. If i'm in a position to, I usually pick that time to get up close and personal about it.
  20. Putting sandbags on the front of Shermans made the crew feel more secure... But the sandbags didn't necesarily make them actually safer. It's an interesting question, though... Do units not break as easily in snow? Will I have to spend more on big arty in a snow QB (for those rare times I'm masochistic enough to agree tot hem)?
  21. Even worse, it seems to me, is that a new type of transport would have to be defined by their nature. You could have the horse platoon with a tranport value of, say, 7, right? But if there is light enemy activity nearby and one or two horse go down, you might suddenly have a transport class 6 or 5 unit and what? The sqad has to split at that point? Seems like a big pain to me for limited gain. THough I must say that I like the idea of having dismounted cavalry as an infantry type if they carried different (probably light?) weapons in the early war.
  22. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by Herr Kruger: Panthers move into position on a hillside.<hr></blockquote> Maybe like this... Yep. Looks like your ISP is picky about capitalization. [ 01-28-2002: Message edited by: Compassion ]</p>
  23. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by History Buff: It got me thinking, could the CM engine be moddeled to do the middle east, vietnam, korean conflicts? <hr></blockquote> BTS has said that with the ranges involved it might be difficult, but who knows what kind f computing power the future will hold. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> I know the theartres after CM:BB is North Africa/Italy, and then German expansion in 1939-1940). <hr></blockquote> How about, CM:BO II using the CM 3.. or CM 4 engine?
  24. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by apex: Unfortunately they don't even seem to be able to do it in operations. apex<hr></blockquote> I think it depends on how the op is designed. I've had tanks repaired overnight in particualrly long ops that simulate I guess a close proximity to a motor pool.
