  1. What do you mean? Changed the name of the files or just the date stamp? Changed his email address? What? None of that sounds nefarious, though if you have never played that way it could be annoying... DId you guys discuss it?
  2. There are a pleathora of ways to win as the Axis (sorry, couldn't resist)... Best way is to blitz the Poles & Denmark, Attack France through the Low Countries and then play it by ear. If England is steeply reduced, you might try Sea Lion. If not, get ready for the Ost Front to open. The Med is a side show that if you can spare the expense, a German tank and air unit can help out tremendously. Spain and Vichy are usually too time consuming for hte Germans, but Vichy is good for Italian pride. Save Yougo for after the reds are in and then give it & Greece (if there's time) to Italy. THere you go, my startegy in a nutshell.
  3. I don't mind seeing the Dutch Gambit... I see it as well balanced with the immediate gain in mmp's offset by the dip in war preparedness with the rest of the Allies. Then again, while I do like to study and interpret the war, I think the game is only tangentially associated with it as it's far too abstract. I think that's the point of the game... it's a historical jumping off point and it doesn't make a big distinction between the political and emotional ties after 1939. 4. Well, there were usually excellent troops in any Waffen SS div (varying of course by when we are talkinagbabout... perhaps I should say better than average), but the leadership was all over the place since it was handed out as political patronage. 5. Anyone who has seen Triumph of the Will knows that's a lie. EVERYTHING in Germany was a military unit. The sight of the "Laborer's Guild" with military like uniforms & banners and chromed shovels slung over their shoulders standing in ranks 50,000 strong at attention in front of Hitler while he gives his endorsement of them shows what was happening in the Reich. Yeah, those are boyscouts on parade.
  6. Ah, but even then, it takes a long time to integrate equipment that's used by anyone other than garritroopers. Yeah, they used captured Hotchkiss's but even the Brtish laughed at that and left them on the beach because they were terrible weapon systems. Like I said, the only place you see the kind of plunder you are talking about is from the Chech weapons industries. What you are talking about happenend only in limited fashion in the East where coy of T-34's were painted with crosses and coy of Panthers sported red stars... but at dribs and drabs rate that wouldn't amount to more than adding a point to a corps now and again.
  7. YEah, but German plundering of the sort that Goering did added nothing t the economy. Other than the pre-war plunder of the Chech armaments industry, I can't see any justification of having plunder in the game at all.
  8. At the risk of being serious for a moment... THere is nothing wrong with the way RAmbo saves his turns on the face of it. When playing most other games, I like to demand seperate turn coding just in case something happens (internet corruption, file loss, massive (obvious to both sides) cock up in orders, whatever) so that it's quick and easy to go back a turn and pick the game up. But on the other hand, SC's save game format seems stable enough that I haven't had a problem AND it's a pain in the butt to have 40 fles for one game since the game load dialog ins't a simple windows dialog but a custom one that forces you to click your way through all files. I would refuse to play like this becasue of the annoyance especially with a half dozen games ging on at times, but as a vehicle for cheating? Please. This is an aesthetic issue perhaps, but anyone who calls someone a cheater for file numbering is a git... I'm on record for saying that I don't particularly like Rambo, but this is just stupid. 9. Thanks for the heads up. The one I posted is the port for direct play and since that's what the folks at BTS use for CM, I figured that they might be the same for SC.
  10. Loved that game. I think I could only ever get two games going because of the household disruption it caused, but loved looking at.
  11. THat could mean that they are all aol'ers and all you are getting is the addy of an AOL proxy... mebbe... or you are getting the address of some router on the internet that they have in common within a hop or two of this home networks. All three personalities have wildly different styles, I would be suprised if someone could be artful enough to pull that off without tripping themselves up especially when things get hot and heavy and posts come at the speed they soemtimes do. 12. Please post this to the Stratgic Command forum as these questions are about game play and game mods and aren't related to technical problems.
  13. IT's not a game... It was never meant to be a game! Rollerball
  14. Forums seem to represent their owners. This one has a distinct BTS flavor which came about when a relatively small group of players gathered around and waited for a full couple of years between the opening of the forums and the release of Combat Mission... that's why the culture here is a bit freewheeling. The rules, both official and unofficial bear that out. Good? Bad? I dunno, it's just how it is. I enjoy these forums better than the ones suggested by J Wagner and The Sarge.. Different strokes, I guess. That doesn't make the Matrix forums (for example) bad, just not an ideal fit for me (and I'm a rabid UV player and praise Matrix every chance I get for bringing back some classics and updateing them and makinhg such outstanding new classics). edit: Because the Raiders dominated today, and I've been celebrating since the first quarter... Homefield throughout... THe Road to San Diego goes through the Black Hole (with apologies to our non US friends who are wondering what I'm on about). 15. J Wagner Not only is the current system balanced, but accurate, I think. Wheather someone decides to pull a unit back and slowly reinforce to leaven reinforcements with vets or feverishly plugs holes with whatever green troops the repple depple has at hand, it is far easier to route these replacements to where they are supposed to go if a fully developed logistical corps is in place to cut orders, control roads, and feed troops. THese are the intangibles that you have to buy when you buy a full blown unit as opposed to reinforcing even the most decimated one. THat officer, quartermaster, and intelligence core is still available and ready to return to action as soon as their OOB is brought up to strength. When buying a new unit, you are also paying for these intangibles that have little to do with the game's listed combat strengths but whom without the battle cannot be fought. edit: Because the Raiders dominated today, and I've been celebrating since the first quarter... 16. Aside from the folly of some military leaders making decisions far from the front (which Jersey John pointed out), there was also the thought in those days before ballistic cloth that body armor would simply be impractical as it would reduce mobility to the point of uselessness... IT's always the infantryman that looks at the tank and thinks "Screw that, I need to be able t oget out of the way of the bullets."
  17. Just defending my low member number breatheran from the far off CM forums! [ December 27, 2002, 02:44 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
  18. If it has decent 3d video it should be ok for the first game, but you are right, with CM: Barbarrossa to Berlin it would be a quivering wreck.
  19. Combat Mission is making rrogress on that front. Lots of players try to make it into an armor game, but at it's heart, it's the next step from SL. It's still in it's infancy, but you migh try the demo for one of them, it looks like it could take the crown in a couple of design cycles. It already does a good job, and the leap from the first to the second game was impressive. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the next iteration.
  20. Jhon- You might want to post in the regular forum as this isn't a tech support issue. As for your issues: you might find that your opponent has his fighters under an HQ's command. A good HQ represents a powerful force multiplier in the game. As well, make sure yours are under command too (also, make sure you are patched to version 1.06 as there was a nasty bug up until then that allowed air units to defend with terrain bonuses). As far as the city fight goes... are you units in supply and fit for combat (have a decent rediness rating)? Also, are they under command? Cities are resource centers and your opponent will be able to reinforce even when cut off (though not as well as when a line is traceable to it's capital). Also note that cities themselves are a defensive force multiplier and if entrenched are that much harder to root out. And finally, I would suggest that you post in English if at all possible as it's the defacto standard for the board as there are literally people from across the globe and it's easier to find info that way as most users have that language in common.
  21. Thanks, Otto. I play on 3 machines and it sure would be good to know that patching wasn't liable to blow me out of the water.
  22. Hey! I resemble that remark (and I decided to buy the day the demo came out!)!
