My hope is that in the engine re-write re-crewing undamaged weapons becomes possible and that it becomes allowable to crews to 'bail' from their weapon if caught in a panicy situation. THen when things stabilize, they are allowed to go back and grab the MG, mortar, whatever. Until then I am satisfied to play with the current system. To allow these guys to either crawl for an unlimited distance or go to CMBO type morale system for HW units would lead to CMBO type abuses with these HW's advancing under fire with no support.

Customer relations - how to do it
Compassion replied to REVS's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
IIRC, it's an artifact of the Great Crash. WHen the forum db became scrambled in early 2000, users were shuffled up and numbers were reassigned alphabetically... And then some of us who tried to post when the forum was hosed had our accounts blown up permanent like so my somewhere in the triple digits user had to be recreated. -
What distinguishes High-res from Low-res?
Compassion replied to AnonymousOxide's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I would suggest pulling a couple hi res mods into photoshop (or what have you) and doing a compare/contrast with their equivalent low res cousins.... CMBO might be easiest as if you don't have some handy, you could just pull Berman's plainpack shermans for a paltry 8 megs combined download and compare them. -
Yeah, but again, as has been pointed out above (by you even in one post) specialized snipers are outside of the scope of this game. They would end up being a couple thousand yards away from the edge ofthe most expansive CM map in most situations right?

Latest CM2 Build: News release!!

David Aitken did that. Searching the 2000/01 archives would probably dig it up. And yes, I am way too lazy to do it myself.</font> -

Getting FOs to Ride
Compassion replied to manchildstein (ii)'s topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Why would you assume that a mech unit has no infrastructure... like having batteries of arty towed to the front, communication being established with their organic HQ's, engineers to string wires communication experts to assign radio frequencies, etc. all well before the first shot is fired (hopefully) and then when the action moves, everything gets locaed onto trcks/railcars, etc. and gets done again somewhere else? -
Graphics redesign, not an engine rewrite.
Compassion replied to Mercury's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Problem is that the calculations that make the sharp animaitons across tens of thousands of sqare meters of game field are used to calculate hits so that has to stay so you can't do things like FPS games where you dump down the complexity of animaitons for anything more than a few feet away and use area hit tables to calculate 'hits' from shots in the general direaction of the target. This means that the while the graphics of CM don't look as fancy as some games it's actually pushing as many triangles as anything alse and keeping accuracy and exactness up. It's going to be hard to push graphics up to the level of UT2003 and also keep the level of accuracy and keep the game playable on most computers (I've already run into that problem... in the midst of restarting a QB with an someone who can't watch movies in a urban battle with heavy damage. THere are some good posts by Steve explaining this clearer than I can from 2001 but I coudln't find them in a quick search. Perhaps he'll explain it anew for a new bunch of players since CMBB came out. -
um... ok... In the same vein, here's what I do: Oh, odd... and sorry, Didn't realize you were going to make 2 posts... an announcement and then the actual post. [ October 29, 2002, 08:00 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]

Green crews bailing from immoblie tanks...
Compassion replied to camp's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
As an anecdotal data point, I played a CMBO game not long ago in which a 20mm flack gun caused a reg Churchie crew to bail. Took out a tread, then the gun and then pelted it with 20mm for about 3 turns... and then the crew bailed. I guess they didn't like the plinking. Hosting mods - possible solutions?
Compassion replied to Manx's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
All true. I'm just thinking about propagation to the partner servers outside of the base Los Angeles servers... not sure they will mirror relatively low activity files. Also selfishly thinking back to the time I lost my hard drive and had to rebuild my CM from scratch... yikes! -

Hosting mods - possible solutions?
Compassion replied to Manx's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Sure, and they already have a CM section that's full of demos & patches... no reason we couldn't submit mods to that section. Only probelms that I can see is that it can be diffiecult to get onto FP if you don't have an acct and for such a niche game, it might not propagate to the partner sites. The advantage of nntp is that it's local and should be fast for all... the disadvantage of course is retention. [ October 20, 2002, 01:45 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ] -

Well, there's a way to just do it by sending out a control message, but lots of news admins, especially ones for the major providers will ignore those messages of there wasn't discussion first at alt.config. You can get it done (the right way) by putting up a req for discussion at alt.config and then stepping though a couple of other steps... You can look in alt.config for a faq or look at any one of several websites that are out there to assist (http://www.nylon.net/alt/newgroup.htm is pretty good). There are some providers that will help you out with the steps. You might inquire with easynews and see if they'll assist. Oh, and I did a search in war-hist and there were 397 posts in the last 3 months on CM... Always a good indicator of support. That doens't answer questions about how many of those posts were about mods, but it's good to have a couple data points. It might be a good idea to hijack an unused binary group for a time to show use. It'll be difficult to show as the argument that web sites and ftp servers closing down is usually considered pretty weak to the alt.configgers. If we started by using an empty group for a while (I would suggest a.b.g.reposts, which has been empty forever) to show interest, I'd be glad to help jump through the hoops if no one has a friendly provider to help. That was me... you're welcome. [ October 20, 2002, 01:12 PM: Message edited by: Compassion ]
