After you have selected your forces in the editor, go to the map screen and press the "preview" button. On the 3d battlefield you can now place your troops. Trenches are no terrain tiles, you have to select them like mines, guns and infantry via the unit selection menu. Then place them on the 3d battlefield like other troops.
