Vet 0369 got a reaction from Ultradave in CMSF2 Demos Released!
My 60mm motar section used to practice "final protective fire" (FPF) by dropping 30 rounds simultaneously down three tubes in one minute at full increment charge (each round has charge increments on the four fins to allow varying the range by removing increments). That meant we had a total of 90 rounds in the air before the first one hit! The tubes would be so hot that the sealant in the base cap would  start to boil out. An FPF was used under emergency conditions when the SHTF and the need for defense out weighed the risks of the rounds walking back to the our lines.
This was always a real concern, even with 60mm mortars. My gunners would check their sights every few rounds to make sure the baseplate wasn't sinking (on soft surfaces) or bouncing (on hard surfaces). Sometimes we'd go so far as to place the baseplate on flak jackets to lessen the sinking or bouncing.

Tell you what, Steve said he would send me an e-mail a week before release of CMSF2 (although he also asked me to remind him because he'd probably forget), so for a nominal fee (I too am an old man, retired, and living on a fixed income), I'll send you private message that the release is a week out😈

I'm sure you'll have exactly the same game specific menu selections as CMBS or any other game that's been updated to version 4.

Fortunately, I own the CMSF1 Big Bundle on my Mac. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play it for two years because of a licensing issue with the Mac OS that even Steve couldn't fix. But he did promise me that it would be fixed "soon" when they updated CMSF to the new engine, so I've been waiting for this update for two years. I guess I should be the biggest complainer, but I know BF, and I'm patient enough to understand that "Stuff" happens, and that no amount of my complaining is going to get it out any faster. You have three choices for everything in life. You can accept it, you can change it, or you can leave it. You get one choice, if you can't change it, or can't leave it, the only choice you have left is to accept it!

More from the "Sales Policy page":
"ORDERS WITH OUT OF STOCK OR PRE-ORDER ITEMS
If your order contains any out of stock, backordered or Pre-order items your order will NOT ship until all ordered items are back in stock. We do not ship out partial orders.
Our online ordering system is setup to bill you at the time of purchase not the time of shipment. That means that as soon as you click the "Submit Order" button your credit card will be billed.
If your order contains backordered or out of stock items you will be billed the full amount before the order ships. If you do not wish to be billed in that way, then please do not place an order with any out of stock or backordered items."
Pre-ordered items are "out of stock" items by definition about which BF clearly states if you don't want to be billed in advance on out of stock items don't order them.
Let's look at this rationally... BF has a Sales Policy page and they have a product page that parrots the key bits of information about when to expect a pre-ordered product (when it is in stock). The product page also says the game will ship when it's ready(it is not in stock until a release candidate has gone gold). I do not perceive this as marketing, I believe this information is included in the sales page so that prospective buyers won't have to read the "Sales Policy" page to understand the pre-ordered item will not ship until it's ready. The unscrupulous thing to do would be to not mention it at all on the product page and fall back on a "Well it is clearly spelled out in our Sales Policy" rationale as an answer to complaints about taking money from customers and not delivering product. Clearly BF has not acted in bad faith toward their customers, but have tried to ensure complete transparency regarding the parameters of the purchase. That's not just marketing, that's also being honest about the parameters of the purchase.

Personally, I notice that the last communication from BF was on August 9 (that was two months ago for those who insist monthly updates are required for good customer relations). I am optimistic that the reason Steve hasn't responded is because the demo or CMSF2 or both, are close to release.
As far as preorders go, MMP states up front that you won't be charged until the product ships. That is their business model. BF obviously doesn't state that, so no one has cause to expect that they won't be charged. That is BF's business model. As I, and others have suggested before, if that upsets you, cancel your preorders and wait until the product ships to order it. That will cost you only $5.00 more per preorder (as someone stated earlier). I don't know what that converts to in Pounds or Euros or other currencies, but I expect it equates to a hamburger at a fast-food restaurant.
Ok, now let slip the trolls who just want to vent and disrupt threads with childish statements, but aren't willing to cancel their preorders to show BF how upset they are..

Having bought a number of preorders from MMP, I'm well aware that they don't charge until the product ships. However, I didn't include that in an attempt to avoid reigniting the previous vitriol. Looks like it didn't matter. Enough said.

I honestly doubt it would do any good to talk to anyone about it. Unless you have been denied a position because you haven't registered, the courts would say "You haven't been harmed, so you have no basis on which to file a complaint." Then they would charge you with failing to register as required by law. No politician is going to vote to change the Selective Service Act because he'd lose all the votes of all the women in his district {I say his because I doubt any female politician would vote to change it}. It's like Qrwell"s "Animal Farm," "All animals are equal, some are just more equal than the rest." Discrimination is discrimination no matter what you call it.

Vet 0369 got a reaction from zinzan in Average Learning Curve???
Well, the total learning curve can be long, not difficult, but long. I've been playing CM since CMBO (the first CM title). I find that I have to readjust my mindset not only for each family, but for the side I'm playing since I try to play each faction as that faction actually was used. This can get particularly difficult playing Soviet after playing U.S. or German. Soviet tactics demand that you follow the plan to the letter, and pursue victory at all costs. You might end up with three Soviet troops on a victory location with the rest of the Batallion lying dead on the field, and be granted a total victory. Each family and module can require rethinking your strategies even if their time frame is only a few months apart. That's the real beauty if the Combat Mission line.
without a doubt though, it is well worth the time and effort!

Since you asked so nicely, Steve posted the following on August 9 ( or is that 9 August to you) on page 15 in the"state of CMSF2" thread. The bolding is mine.
And that's it, I'm done feeding the Troll.

"Seriously, this is just another example of the futility of release dates.  If I post wrong ones we get skewered for not delivering on expectations those dates set.  If I post no dates we get skewered for not doing things which set expectations which we aren't sure we can meet.  Damned if we do, damned if we don't is a really unfair position to be in, but we accept that is the way things work.
Given that we have to make a choice between being damned for setting up expectations that aren't met or damned for not setting up expectations, I think the right choice is the latter.  If someone wants to lay out a rational case for doing things differently, I'm all ears.
    Steve
P.S.  one of the beautiful things about being an independent, self publishing game developer is we don't have any problem with someone tuning out for a year and then coming back to see what we have.  We don't have a 60 day window to make or break our future like other game companies.  So if people want to check back with us in a year because that works best for that person, it works fine for us too.  No pressure."
