  1. I think that wouldn't be too far off base para. I was thinking 8 months from day of release for commonwealth to adjust for any possible setbacks.
  2. I wish they would hurry up and open pre-orders already!!!! I have my cash in hand and want to spend it....on this!!!!
  3. When playing as blue vs. red, I use reece vehicles to 'recon by death'. I then lay down smoke in front of enemy positions, and any arty I have to suppress. If no smoke, then use terrain and bounding movement to close my IFV/Infantry or Infantry close. Dismount if needed, and then close with and destroy the enemy. I like large maneuvers versus methodical plodding. Shock and Awe so to speak. You need to be on top of them when they come out of their holes, so you can knock them back in there for good
  4. Funny, this morning I read here about mortars not being able to fire from behind buildings and I say, "huh, never seen that before" and then I start a game and a while into it, I go to request a fire mission and what do ya know??? My mortar can't fire cause LOS is blocked by a house, awesome!!!!
  5. I played a few games of ASL at the local gaming shop (when we had those that is) but what I enjoyed so much more was a home brew set of rules using miniatures on a scale similar to CM. There was a $3 charge per day to play, and Saturdays were the day for this game, and I probably could have bought my own set of stuff for the cash I spent for admission, lol. One particular battle stands out, my first of course, as I was all of about 14 years old. It was set right after D-Day, and I was one of the Axis commanders. We were counterattacking the American beach head with Pumas, Tigers, and PzIV's supported by a reinforced company of Infantry. I commanded the platoon of Pumas and a platoon of Infantry in halftracks and my goal was to push up the right flank of the main assault, spoiling and attempt to attack from that direction. Not knowing anything at all, I rolled up using full movements with a halftrack in the lead. I lost it to a bazooka, but managed to do something fairly smart for a kid, which was to dismount the rest of my troops and attack the ambush, while pushing my Pumas right on through. A P-47 attack was called, and this I will never forget, the dice rolled 12 for the one Whirbelwind we had and the lead P-47 exploded in mid air. His wingman thought better of pressing the attack and we were safe from air attack after that. The attack was a success, and we divided the beach head. The shop owner, a Nam vet from the Kennedy time of the war, told me that during Normandy, small areas were overrun by the germans and they were able to fire 88s from Tigers at Destroyers sailing off shore providing fire support. The Tigers scored hits but the AP rounds they were firing were not having any real effect, as they were going in one side and coming out the other without exploding since the armor of the DDs hulls weren't anything like that of a tank. The one thing that a game session of CM will never provide is that relationship that develops between wargamers in a club. I guess that's what the forums are for, but nothing really matches having beers and sodas around a table loaded with miniatures.
  6. I am guessing the 25pdr will be in there since that is what is carried by the Sexton, which is listed!! I am pretty happy with the Wespe being in, I used this vehicle more then I probably should have in CMx1. And since a mortar version of the Universal Carrier is listed, and this most likely carried a 3", then the 3" will be there too! Besides the Wespe, the favorites that are listed have to be the Achilles and the Sherman Firefly!!! Certainly give those Tiger and Panther crews something to think about I am also very curious to see how the PIAT will be received by the crowd since it gives us the ability to hide AT crews inside buildings, something sorely missed with the current Bazookas and Panzerschrecks. However, not having the epic amount of fire a Garand armed squad can put down will make infantry fights and much more balanced affair IMHO. And make things downright difficult for the Brit/Canadian troops on the attack. EDIT - My mistake about the Universal Carrier with a 3" mortar. I guess it was only the Australians who used this, and the normal Carrier Company had them with 2" mortars. I still can't see a Commonwealth module without the 3" though, so it's a safe bet in my mind.
  7. I just had a small accident in my pants, and I liked it!!!!!! This, this right here is exciting news, why didn't my Yahoo! page tell me of such things??? Surely this is more important then some idiots debating who told the most lies during their campaign for president! This is not only going to add commonwealth forces, but open up a ton of possibilities for SS vs US scenarios. I am a happy man, my money awaits you BF!!!
  8. I love the NATO expansion personally. Playing as the Canadians is a good time, I feel they're the least powerful of the NATO countries included. Their force is more set towards occupation then shock and awe. Don't get me wrong, the LAV III can lay down some death, but doesn't have ATGMs like the Marder or the 35mm Auto-Death of the CV9035. The Leopard is also a tank that demands more attention then the M1A2 since it seems to be more vulnerable.
  9. I just played a QB the other day where an HQ support unit became the HQ when the CO of the weapons platoon was killed. This is the first time I've noticed it, but it does work.
  10. I have submitted a ticket. I think I have discovered the cause of my problems, and that is I didn't read the instructions concerning the auto system on the licence page being for games released after Jan,1,2011. I am unable to unlicence CMSF from my old computer cause they are no longer with us so to speak. I think a reset should do the job, hope to hear back from the help desk soon. BTW - Thx for the prompt response!!!
  11. I also am having trouble licencing my copy of Shock Force/Marines Bundle on my laptop. I had used a licence on an old computer and one on my current desktop. When I requested an additional licence it said the licence didn't exist.
  12. Gerry, they are definitely rifle grenades, it's in the manual is well, don't know the page off the top of my head but it should be in the US Weapons section. Yes, you are correct, M7 is the name for the M1 Garand w/rifle grenade attachment. They rounds used to fire the grenades are blank so the whole getup has a different designation (please, if I am wrong, correct me on this last one.) AFAIK, the HE Rifle Grenade came in two different version historically. One of them was a rifle grenade body with a Mk.II hand grenade welded to the top of it, and the other had a cup on the end of a rifle grenade body that a normal Mk.II could be placed in to fire it over longer distances with more accuracy then could be done by hand. @ akd - I am curious, what is the actual diameter of the HE Rifle Grenade???
  13. AT Grenade is fired by the M1 w/rifle grenade adapter. Also in the weapons panel below the special equipment panel, you should see 3x 66mm HE, these are the HE rifle grenades. The AT rifle grenades get a picture, but the HE only get a listing.
  14. Yes Erwin, 2 up - 1 back is to correct way to do things. I didn't elaborate, but that is the way I do things as well. When scouting, I tend to use a slightly larger force then the two man scout unit. I use the A section, with the SMG, to do the actual scouting. I like to have the BAR troop follow fairly close behind to facilitate an escape with suppression fire if the scout unit gets into to much trouble. Then I figure the best way to cope with the situation at hand. The comment about only reinforcing success can't be over stated. Yes, there may be a time or two when an extra platoon could have made the difference, but more often then not you are just feeding the grinder. Using your strongest forces to attack their weakest point is also pure gold. On the defense, I use a tactic as old as organized warfare. I will withdraw a force in an attempt to lure the attacking forces into pursuit so I can attack their flanks with a squad or two I keep in reserve.
  15. When I am fighting large battles, with a Batt+ involved, I always end up breaking everything down into a series of smaller engagements. For example, it is tempting to use an entire platoon of troops to recce an area when you have three full infantry companies. I give each Company an area of responsibility, be it on the attack or in the defense, and then break that down into setting up each Companies battle area by giving each platoon an area of responsibility. I then fight nine platoon size fights instead on one huge Battalion sized melee. I also don't waste anything in this way. More often then not, the problem I had before this technique was not using enough force to do the job, sending reinforcements in piece meal until they were slaughtered and having a ton of support elements laying around at the end. With the new way, I have my support groups engaged in supporting their charges, and all the firepower at my disposal is used.
  16. I think the current CMx2 in entirely capable of this kind of battle. As stated before, mission builders could force 'banzi' style charges using either side in CMBN if they wanted too. It seems to me that many people do not play strictly as their historical counterparts would either. There is nothing that compels the player to play according to historical doctrine now, with the exception of the manner in which missions are built. You could use German light infantry en-mass against a couple US platoons supported by a weapons company with a short mission time and assault orders in the heavy woods. Give the US tons of good arty, observers, TRPs, and give the Germans a single 75mm field gun and you would have a good approximation of Iwo Jima One thing I don't think the current engine could do is the infiltration warfare that made up a majority of the common actions in the PTO. The framework for a title and 2-4 modules could be: Main title - Combat Mission: Americal - This would be the base pack, with regular US Army infantry and standard Imperial Japanese Army Infantry. Module 1 - Guadalcanal - This would have the US Marines. Since they used a ton of 03 Springfields at the time and with their unique TOE would make an accaptable module. And for the Japanese, the Special Naval Landing Force (SNLF), being naval troops and very motivated and maybe some extra goodies for the IJA. Module 2 - AIF - This would introduce the Australians. Namely, the AIF, fresh from the middle east and thrown into combat defending Port Moresby on the end of the Kokoda Trail. The Australians, with their unique weapons and OOB, would make an excellent module all in it's own. Module 3 - Buna - This would be the other end of the Kokoda Trail. The Australian infantryman at this time may have been to most effective jungle fighting man in the world, but at Buna & Gona, the swamps swallowed all. The US Army fought here too, it what may have been the most hostile battlefield of WWII. The Japanese built pill boxes in the swamp itself, and the battle was fought from dry spot to dry spot, visibility never more then 75 yards, and that was exceptional. The battles would be difficult to model here, but small unit actions would feel like battalion sized engagements in their length and tension. This would upgrade both the OZ and US armies to late 43 - early 44 equipment levels and provide a solid amount of content, as well as adding some armor to the Japanese side. Module 4 - Wewak - This would be the 'odds and ends' module, adding some rare equipment and getting all the armies involved up to at least late 44 equipment and OOB levels. Even with all this, there is still the epic China/Burma/India theater which could be it's own game and module set. Also the Central Pacific that was dominated by epic naval battles and vicious battles over tiny atolls. And the Philippines is still yet to be covered in any of these. That theater lends itself best to the current CMx2 engine, with tank battles (albeit one sided), open fields, and traditional city fighting. HeHe, now that it's all laid out, someone with $1 million to spare, get to developing :p I have an artist that will work real cheap, and he just got out of the Army after a tour in Iraq. I realize forcing him to play CMSF and like it may have been a bad idea, but it's got his art back where it needs to be, about the military!!!
  17. All in all, I have really enjoyed this thread! It helps to put a more "human" identity to the forum handles we see everyday. I myself have been straight and sober since April 4th, 2010, five months after I found out I was to be the father of twin girls at the ripe old age of 26 and split with the mother over my bad habits. I am now the proud father of twin 13 1/2 month old baby girls named Faith Hope and Kyleigh Meadow. Started walking at 10 and 9 1/2 months respectively and weighing in at 31 lbs and standing tall at 32 inches. Their mother and I are making it work, and this has undoubtedly been the best thing that has ever happened to this poor soul. Combat Mission actually helped me in this process, in a very literal and involved way. Having such a great hobby, that requires so much of my time to be spent at home enjoying it, has made a serious contribution to my recovery in helping me stay away from those who would wish me harm without knowing it. I hope deep down that this will be a hobby I can share with my daughters, a long shot but with twins my odds are improved. It can by such an engaging and interactive teaching tool that the wish to use it, and my knowledge of history, to plant the same seed of curiosity in them that my grandfather instilled in me as a child. As long as they manage to learn at least one new thing every day, they will be way ahead of the game by the time it really counts. So as we share our stories, some bragging and some cautionary, perhaps there are some who will reach the same conclusion I did about that lifestyle and make a positive change. Just one life improved would pay for all the time spent talking a million times, and I know it's possible since it happened to me!!!
  18. hehehe.........agitated.........hehehe.........what a wonderful way to put it!
  19. B4 rehab, 'stuff' and gaming went hand in hand, now it's not quite the case. I do take a maintenance med though, that keeps the demons at bay, but it almost defeats the point of not using. When in rehab, besides the whole giving yourself up to a higher power, there was a part where they told us we needed to find a hobby, I said, "Hell!!! I already have one, Combat Mission!!!" And so, my history of giving BF cash instead of the guy in the trench coat started in earnest.
  20. I love the CV90 as well. I can say I wouldn't mind a CV9040 either I looked up the CV90 after NATO was released and there are sooo many versions of her out there, we could almost have a whole CV90 module. Now wouldn't that be a treat!!!
  21. If there is a vast difference in the sighting capabilities of the vehicles in question, it could happen. Say, 1 M1A2 with thermal vs. 5 T-62's with no visual sighting aids, then this could and does happen on the regular. Need some more details to make a good determination.
  22. There is a good point in here about the content that we are talking about here. Look at a base CMSF install, now look at it with Marines, Brit Forces, and NATO added on. Big difference, and I am still finding stuff in the NATO OOB that I have never seen before and I bought it a day or so after launch on a whim (got me back into CM till CMBN it did) By the time an Ostfront game is released, I doubt I will have played every scenario and used every unit in all the previous titles combined, so I opt to wait patiently for the Commonwealth module and enjoy the goodness at hand. Battlefront and I both know that, 2012 or 2018, I am going to buy it no matter how much I talk about it between now and then!!!
  23. Ahhh....the Dragon....reason they developed the Jav. The large signature of the Dragon launch would be a sure fire way to force people to re-deploy ATGM teams after a shot, the Jav makes it too easy. Wouldn't need to even have the team itself spotted, just look for the smoke plume. Also, the systems used in this period were not quite a lethal as the modern stuff, at there would still be a fair amount of sport in a PBEM using large conventional forces. Seems like a no brainer to me as well. What I would also find interesting is what the actual utility of ground attack aircraft like the A10 and AH64 would have for a battlefield commander. So your M1s are out numbered 4 - 1 by Russian T-64's and a few T-80's, you have a decent position, but the prep arty immobilized most of your armor. Will the mavericks and hellfires be enough to kill the tanks your M1s cant see before the numbers overwhelm you???? What a Combat Mission this would be!
  24. I have always though CMSF or CMA would be a great platform for a Chechen War game. The asymmetric nature of the conflict fits so very well with the SF game play. I think I will be almost more interested in playing your mod!!!
