Please be patient... the game is still in BETA and I am purposefully staying away form the Soviet infantry in my AAR thread because they are not yet ready for their close-up.

Eleventh & Twelfth Minutes – “…damn your eyes.”

“There are not enough Indians in the world to defeat the Seventh Cavalry.”
    George Armstrong Custer

    Minute 11:
This might have been a pivotal turn and Warren must be reeling... his email simply said, “…damn your eyes”.  Warren is a pretty confident guy, but it could be that I am getting under his skin now.
    Planned moves for this turn…
Tank Section 1 was moving to the rear slightly to improve their Hull Down status to the T-64Bs near NAI3 Tank Section 2 was moving forward to aggressively interdict the enemy vehicles near NAI2.. note that at the end of the last turn I had one BMP-1P spotted on this flank and this was the only enemy vehicle identified on this flank. Note the identified enemy units important for this turn’s resolution. Also note that the T-64B tagged in the following image, is NOT the same one I beat up on last turn.  I ordered my M-60s to ignore that one and concentrate on this second tank further back in the tree line.
For each of the following overall images, the firing unit is circled in white, the target is circled in yellow.

    Tank Section 1 – 1/9:
At the end of last turn this tank left a round in the air, and this turn it connected with a BMP-1…

    Kill #1

    Tank Section 1 – 1/8:
Manually targeted the T-64B in the tree line… first round was a penetration but several HEAT rounds later this T-64B was knocked out.  Tough bastards.
Note that in this image, a T-64A has been spotted on Warren’s left flank (my right).

    Kill #2

    Tank Section 2 – 1/5:
The T-64A was moving laterally in front of the treeline… it was an easy two rounds into its flank.

    Kill #3
Note the BMP-1P in the background of the above image…

    Tank Section 2 – 1/6:
At the end of the turn, this tank finally killed the last of the Recon Platoon BMPs that was on this flank (this was the BMP that killed my M-150 last turn).  It took two rounds to kill it... a third set it alight.

    Kill #4
Note the knocked out T-64A in the background.

Finally at the end of the eleventh minute, my 1st platoon’s recon scouts spotted a platoon of T-62s… this will be his final reinforcement.  These are located just beyond the overpass and behind the line of BMP-1s overwatching the infantry swarming toward the town.

    Minute 12:
No images this turn… but in the twelfth minute Tank Section 2 (1/5 and 1/6) spot two more T-64As in the trees near the one destroyed last turn next to the BMP-1P… they hit them both several times (one received a gun hit), no penetrations and both were alive at the end of the turn, but they had both moved back and away from the line.. one or both of these tanks might be severely damaged and will be engaged again next turn.
I've been building to this.for a while, but now...
    ...Warren’s left flank is open.

“As long as I breathe, I attack."

A few key events this turn:

M-60A1(RISE+) (1/8) missed the shot it took at the end of last turn, that round going long.  But it fired an additional four times at the T-64B it spotted last turn.. connecting on two.

That had to hurt.. I know those hits caused at least one casualty.  Its possible this tank is a gun kill, and that's as good as knocking it out as far as I'm concerned.  Still, I am not counting on that.
M-150 (1/5) - I'm an idiot... in he hope of bringing the final (as far as I can tell) BMP near NAI2 under fire, I crept this tank hunter forward to take up a Hull Down spot with visibility of this spot... but I failed to mask the M-150 from the rest of the field.
It was spotted by both a BMP-1 and the T-64B (from the previous vignette) in their battle position.  First the BMP fired it's Sagger:

Then the T-64B fired as well...

The T-64's shell fell short, but the BMP must have had a gifted Sagger gunner, as I swear that missile skimmed inches off the ground...

    ...but alas it flew true...

Finally, for the group playing my "What's Bil Planning?" game... I am moving 2nd Platoon's Scouts to the left side of the field, as shown... what are they up to?  Hmmm

I promise I won't keep you in suspense much longer, and will reveal what I am thinking with one of my next two posts.

Ok let's go with The Plan:
I am going to push some BMPs into a screen to try and take out those M60s on the left, also will re-push my T64s on the left.  Then I am going to 1) continue to push dismounted infantry forward and 2) push the Tank Coy and a mounted Inf Pl into a slot I call "Slot 2.5".  That is some dead ground (I hope) that is also covered by my Eyes on the right.  Once we make it to the dead ground in valley center we fan out and start pushing (I have an arty line up there too to screen).  So this turn I will position to the Slot and push out the screen, then next turn we go for it.  Wish me luck and see you on the other side.

A small technical note. The screenshots show the game being played using 'movie lighting' (Alt-M). BFC added that feature awhile ago after players complained that real-world coloring seemed unrealistic after growing up on a diet of old newsreels and war movies with  purposefully washed-out colors. M-150(1/5) and the BMP-1PK on NAI2 spotted each other about the same time, though the M-150 fired its TOW a second or so earlier than the BMP fired its AT-4…

    Scratch one more BMP.

Early this turn in Tank Section 1, M-60A1(RISE+) (1/8) spots another Recon BMP-1P…

    …it does take a quick shot…

…which falls well short.. and then he loses the spot.

Right towards the end of the turn the same tank spots a T-64B moving toward the clump of trees ahead of NAI3.  Again it fires, but this time, the turn expires before the round can travel the entire distance.  Damn!
We'll find out how that goes next turn, don't go too far from your computer.

    T-64B, beauty shot:

Two of my M-106 mortar carriers began sending their spotting rounds this turn… this fire is intended to block the approach into Dolbach.

For those of you playing, the “What is Bil planning?” Sweepstakes... another clue: I have moved my FO up to the ridge and dismounted.  What can that mean?

Finally, I wanted to give you a good overview of the map and an update on my enemy Order of battle reconstruction:
After some research the Soviet Recon Company is composed of the following:
    Company CO on a BRM-1
x2 Recon Platoons – each composed of: Recon Platoon Leader on a BMP-1K x2 Scout Teams, each on a BMP-1 So far I have identified the following Recon Company units:
Two BMP-1PKs, the Platoon Leaders’ rides (as of this turn, both have been knocked out) Three of the four BMP-1Ps the Scout Teams ride on (one has been knocked out) This turn I also identify the Company CO’s BRM-1 So the intelligence picture of what I am up against is becoming clearer every turn.  Following is the current SITMAP.  Note the enemy Support by Fire (SBF) positions and the central position taken up this turn by one Mech Infantry platoon, three BMP-1s moved forward of the overpass and disgorged their infantry.  I suspect the infantry will be moving on foot to Dolbach while the BMPs remain in an overwatch position.
Warren's weight is on his right (my left) as his SBF near NAI2 has lost two of it's three BMPs.  The SBF position near NAI3 has lost one BMP-1PK, but has been reinforced by the Company CO's BRM.
I expect Warren to push hard toward Dolbach shortly.. and that is a fight I cannot participate in as I don't have the infantry he does.  So I have something else in mind...    CLUES GALORE!!! Have fun.

Some ideas may be your title's logos, pictures of your 3D models of rare or popular tanks (and assault guns with soldiers in artillery uniforms). Also 2D pics with listings of the tanks statistics for us armor geeks.  I'm sure the community has many ideas for Merch and online outlets that would make it relatively easy.

I thought you'd be interested in seeing the battle damage from the two Saggers that hit M-150(1/4).  Very low on the hull front.. I am not usually that careless when checking Hull Down.. lesson learned!

M-150(1/5) is reversing slightly to improve its position... note that in the following image it looks like this vehicle can spot a T-64 on EAA-1.. but it cannot target it.. so with this reverse move he will pull out of any view on EAA1.

    2nd Platoon
I have made some decisions based on what I have seen so far and with the Soviets movements and unit placement.. also remember I am getting my second and final reinforcement in two minutes.
With what you have seen so far in this AAR as a guide, and after reading the following.. lets play a game, try to answer the following...
    What is Bil planning?
Clue the First, I am shifting all four of the 2nd Platoon tanks to my right:
Clue the second, the two M-150s in this platoon are moving forward... note the location of their covered arcs:
Looking forward to reading your guesses... it'll be a few turns before I confirm or deny them, but light it up folks.

It's theoretically possible to stuff the barrel on your PK through the port while the mounting mechanism removed. So, perhaps it may be possible to fit in (it would be extremely awkward and impractical) Also, the venting system that's meant to help keep the gasses/fumes from firing the weapon out of the crew compartment would not be applicable. Here's a pic of removing an AK. You need to turn it sideways to get the front sight post to fit through. I don't have data of the height of the front sight and barrel on a PK but if you may be able to hook it through.. Same goes for the SVD. Again, the rotating and yawing firing port mount (the part with the glass) won't be locked to the guns movement so you functionality there. Not sure sure if the locking piece is compatible with the SVD but it's possible.
The key take away is it's definitely not intended but perhaps possible to use an SVD or PK's barrel out the window but the actual use of the weapon would be extremely awkward and possibly dangerous to the inside crew (no ventilation of gasses).
    Here's the video I'm pulling from so you can see it in more detail yourself;

Clarity, according to the Oxford Dictionary is “The quality of being certain or definite.”  Warren’s movements gave me that this turn.
First the good news!   I know where some of his armor is, and I know what the type is.  There are two T-64As and I have spotted four BMP-1s (yes the Sagger armed version).  So I believe this is a separate formation from what was already on the map.  This must be part of the FSE which I have been expecting… should be formed on one Motorized Rifle Company (BMP-1 evidently) with one four-tank platoon in support.  Of course the organization still needs to be confirmed.
CMCW Feature:  The unit organizations for this game include many preformed task groups, including Soviet Forward Security Element, US Company Teams (different flavors), etc.

Some tank porn for you perverts (you know who you are), I present Miss February, the T-64A:

Before we continue let’s answer some PIRs:
    Priority Intelligence Requirements (PIRs):
    1.      Where is/are the enemy SBF position(s)
Warren has spread several BMP-1PKs along the treeline, being careful to stay out of my tank’s line of fire… though maybe that’s coincidence as they just destroyed the two BMPs that were in their zone of fire.  I believe this line is his SBF position.
    2.      What is the size of the initial Soviet force?
I am calling the initial formation the Recon Company, but I need to figure out why it has two BMP-1PKs… hmmm.
3a.       Where are enemy’s tanks?  This is a persistent PIR and should be kept updated throughout the action.
Two T-64As have been identified in EAA1.  There should be two more in the FSE but those have yet to be located
3b.      What model tanks are in the Reconnaissance Company?
No tanks have been identified in the Recon Company only BMP-1Ps
4a.       What is the organization of the initial follow-on force?
4b.      What model tanks are in the initial follow-on force?
5a.       What is the organization of any additional follow-on forces?
5b.      What model tanks are in any additional follow-on forces?
PIRs 4a, 4b, 5a, and 5b cannot be answered yet.

Okay I admit it… moving my M-150s forward was ill-advised.. got a little impatient there.  Let this be a lesson to you.
    1.      M-150(1/5) moves forward, and luckily is still Hull Down to the BMP-1P that fires on it…
The shooter (spotted after he launched):

    The result (from two angles):

    …meanwhile:
    2.      M-150(1/4) moves too far forward.. sees the vehicles on EAA1 and then reverses as quickly as possible.. I really misjudged my Hull Down with this one.  Totally on me.
    Two shooters (from EAA1):

Well he did get a TOW off right before he gets smoked... of course the TOW went wild after that.
What did I tell you? Beware of the BMP in this game… they are deadly.
Okay.. it’s late and I need to process this one and decide how best to respond.  Stand by for that.

“Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash.”
    George S. Patton

Warren continues to stick his nose out… this time it’s a standard  BMP-1P that is spotted by a tank from Tank Section 2…

…from top to bottom:  M-60A1(RISE+) (1/6) fires one APFSDS round, which misses, but does inflict one casualty… then quickly followed up by two HESH rounds... though the first of these was all it took to kill this BMP.
    Range:  1270m

There are now at least four infantry or recon teams moving towards Dolbach, and one of those looks like an HQ... so either one full platoon, or parts of two.  They have a long way to go yet and they are on foot so I expect they’ll be getting tired by the time they get there.
     Planned welcoming party:
    ·         I have pushed Scout 1’s M113A2 forwards to get a gun laid on their route
    ·         I have plotted a mortar strike in front of them… set to hit in about three minutes

A quick note, I am still biding my time here and gathering information.  Warren is being very cautious… I expected him to be a little more aggressive, and he has probably received his first reinforcements too so I will probably see some tanks soon, and the aggressiveness will ramp up.  I need to wait a bit until I get more information prior to moving on incomplete information.
That said, I am going to move both of my M-150s into better positions to try and bag one of the BMPs I can see in the tree line yonder.

“Onward we stagger, and if the tanks come, may God help the tanks.”
    William Darby

Near NAI2 a Tank Section 1 tank (1/9)) spotted the BMP-1PK that M-150(1/4) had spotted in the previous minute and fired short on.

It took two rounds, but eventually the tank put one through the BMP, in the front and out the back.  This was the Company Commander BMP mentioned in my last post.  Hopefully the Company CO was on board when the round hit.
    Range:  1610m.

Another BMP-1PK (Company HQ vehicle) moved forward and was spotted on NAI2 by M150(1/5) .  It loosed a TOW, which after about 10 seconds in the air…

…hit the damned trees.  This BMP is very well situated and close enough to the edge of the trees to still be able to see out, yet far enough back that the trees provide some protection.  Classic positioning.
    Range: 1546m

One of the Scout Teams has reached it’s observation position (OP) and notices some infantry movement moving from NAI3 and it looks like it may be heading toward the town.  No... this does not appear to be related to the MP that was just destroyed.
Also spotted as an infantry or scout team moving from NAI2 towards the smoke screen.  Will keep an eye on these contacts, but I find it curious that Warren would order dismounted teams to move towards Dolbach.

Reinforcements!  Received my first (of two) reinforcements this turn.  Including:
2nd AC Platoon equipped with M113A1, M-60A1, and M150 Tank Hunters
Mortar Section equipped with an HQ on an M-577 and x3 M106A1s Armored Cavalry (AC) Troop HQ and Forward Observer team, both mounted on M-113A1s
What are my plans for them?  It is way too early and I don’t have enough information to task them yet.
For now they will be the first component of my reserve, counter-attack force.  I plan on keeping 1st AC Platoon engaged and observing the enemy movements and positions.  Once I have enough information I will make a plan for my reserve.
I think I can put my M-106s to work pretty soon though, depending on what he sends down EAA1.

Be sure it's enabled in your system settings. Then, Windows key+G to toggle. There are lots of other hot key combos that you can discover by hovering after toggling on. The two main ones:

Modules I'd like to see (staying with the European theater), that I assume could stand a chance of being realistically expected:
    1. West Germany / East Germany
    2. Britain (BAOR) / Poland / Czechoslovakia
    3. Canada / Netherlands / Belgium / Denmark (Centurions !) / Austria (?)
    4. A module that brings in the timeline between '83 to '91. This would update all of the equipment and organizations for the previous modules/base-game. However this would be quite hard to execute with the current licensing scheme (with the desire to limit each module to not requiring other modules beyond the base-game). Winter textures would probably be appreciated too (covering modules and base-game content). Perhaps this module could be done first so that all follow-on modules would have all the equipment/organization of '79 - '91.

Modules that would probably be unlikely to be made, but would be cool if they did show up:
    5. France
    6. Italy / Yugoslavia / Romania / Hungary
    7. Norway / Finland / USMC / Sweden (?)

I would assume that any content that goes beyond the European theater may warrant enough work to be considered its own base-game. However I could be wrong on that account. This entire game family would remain with the current engine (CM 2, Engine 4 and probably an Engine 5 Upgrade).

For my part, I really enjoy seeing many different armies represented, and my favorite Combat Mission games are invariably those which have more variety in playable nations (SF2, Normandy, FI) rather than less (RT, FB, BS). So I would really like to see a prioritization towards development of modules that add new nations.
The #1 addition in that regard is probably West and East Germany for me, but that could very easily roll into Netherlands/Denmark, and eventually France/Britain along with other Warsaw Pact nations that would add something interesting to the mix. I realize most Warsaw Pact nations were 'Soviets but worse', but the same could be argued about the Commonwealth nations in Normandy/Fortress Italy.
The long-term desire for me would be an expansion of the game to include other theaters of war more incidental to the main conflict around Germany  For example, a Balkan/Mediterranean module with Italy and Yugoslavia, or stuff in the Middle East (Israel vs Arab Powers), or the Arctic (Finland/Sweden/Norway, possibly bring in Canada). But I would prefer these inclusions only be explored after a really solid fleshing out of the Central European theater.
And maybe a 'stretch goal' could be the inclusion of some more obscure conflicts... Bush Wars in Africa/Asia/Latin America, hypothetical scenarios that could involve Asian powers like a fictional Korean War 2.0, or a Sino-Soviet alliance and/or split that leads to Asia becoming a major theater of war.

As far as follow-on modules go.. yes several are planned, but what they are specifically we will keep to ourselves until after the game is released.  For now the focus must stay on the base-game for us, but feel free to conjecture and dream, I enjoy those threads, but we won't be confirming or denying anything until after this one is on the street.

You must find the balance between speed and force preservation.

Ammo shouldn’t be a problem, but the further you go, the harder it will be to replace casualties, especially the BMP-3.

Have fun, hope you enjoy it and all feedback are more than welcome(it's my first shot, so I'm sure I have room for improvement, your feedback will be very helpful for that)

    Fourth Minute - First Contact!
Forgive me for a second AAR post today, but I will be traveling tomorrow and wanted to get this one published tonight.

“One should not be diverted by geographical objectives, but should concentrate on the destruction of the enemy’s military forces.”

A little excitement during this turn, and first shot fired (all times are in Game Time, counting down from 40:00).  Yellow text for contacts equals a tentative contact, red text is for solid identified contacts.
@36:47:  Early in this minute M150 (1/5) got a firm spot on an enemy BMP moving to the edge of the woods, then immediately lost the contact as it continued forward slightly.  Positive ID: BMP-1P.  Note:  this is a resolution of the tentative spot from the third minute.
@36:35:  M150 (1/4) noticed some movement near NAI3.  Appears to be a light armored vehicle, suspected to be a BMP.
@36:21:  The 36:35 spot becomes a positively identified BMP-1P as it nosed slightly out of the treeline.   This BMP is oriented directly toward M-150(1/4) but does not have a spot, it could be overwatching the ridge the Tank Hunter is sitting on.

Note the type of ATGM (AT-4 I believe) and the mast antenna.  The ATGM makes it a BMP-1P, the mast antenna makes this a BMP-1PK, a Company Commander's personal ride.  One Company HQ identified... make a note.
As the BMP halted at the edge of the treeline it gave M-150 (1/4) enough time to aim and loose a TOW, which alas, fell well short of the mark probably due to my smoke screen.  The contact was then immediately lost, probably due to the smoke, missile destruction debris etc.

With any luck, the enemy commander will have missed the missile launch and will think the missile’s impact with the ground is a spotting round.

@36:04:  M150 (1/4) noticed some movement within NAI2.  Appears to be a light armored vehicle, suspected to be a third BMP.  One full Company or parts of two?  Time will tell.
Only one adjustment was made to my positions this turn.  After a quick check, M-150 (1/4) is only Partially Hull Down to the BMP it fired at this turn so will be reversing into a full Hull Down position to this enemy vehicle, and will also be narrowing its cover arc to focus on the location of this enemy BMP.
A note about Hull Down… just because you are Hull Down to one piece of ground, does not mean you are Hull Down to another.  You should check and recheck this as a scenario unfolds, especially when you have firm contact sightings.

    First Three Minutes!
“Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.”
A Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi

The initial phase of this action will be me positioning my units to get eyes on the most likely enemy avenues of approach, especially EAA1 (NAI 1).
    After two minutes of action:
M113A2s and Scouts: Reached their drop off points and the two Scout teams have dismounted and are continuing on foot in order to get into positions where they can look into EAA1.  The Platoon Leader will stay mounted in his M113 for now.

M-60A1 (Rise+) Section 1:  Arrived in hull down positions with views of NAI 2 and 3. M-60A1 (Rise+) Section 2:  Arrived in hull down positions with views of NAI 2 and 3. Tank Section 1 moves into position:

M150 TOW Tank Hunters:  Both now in hull down positions overlooking NAIs 2 and 3.
Artillery Smoke Screen:  After two minutes I have cancelled the fire from both batteries.  Mainly because I want them available once my Scouts start to see into NAI 1.  The screen should build for a few more turns as laid then should last for several more.  It’ll be interesting to see how effective it is at messing with the Soviet spotting-targeting cycle.
FIRST ENEMY INDICATOR:  In the third minute M150 1/5 (1st Platoon, 5th Vehicle)) noticed some movement in the woods between NAIs 1 and 2.  Nothing is known about this contact other than that it is a light armored vehicle, suspected BMP from the Recon Company.

Now to place this image in context... in case you ever wondered what a Hull Down M-150 Tank Hunter looks like from the Soviet perspective:
