  1. Actually CMSF buildings fall about that easily, if not easier. As I posted in another thread, here is one tactic I would use in a QB where I was assigned a lot of light AFVs, but no real infantry to speak of. I would line abreast all of my LAVs, or 40mm Strykers, or anything with an automatic firing cannon, and have them area fire the first row of buildings. after a minute or two those buildings would rubble to the foundation. then I would repeat this action for the next row of buildings, and the next, and so forth, till I had a clear view of my objective. I would occasionally have some leftover infantry in the rubble, but they would be so demoralized by that point they were hardly a threat at all. I guess my point is I doubt ME architecture is so shoddy as to make this a viable tactic in the real world. And I especially wouldn't plan on it in WWII, either. But also this isn't exactly a game breaker by a long shot, and would hardly constitute something to hold up the works. But it is something to think about.
  2. Well, in real life that is mostly true. But then again, whenever I played CMSF quick battles and got handed a bunch of light AFVs, like LAVs, Strykers and such, with no infantry support to be found, I would just area fire into the closest row of buildings until demolished. Then the next row. Then the next. Granted, I was usually fairly low on HE by the time I got to the city center, but usually whoever I was attacking would start to fire back, then get hosed by 3-4 LAVs in line abreast formation. I would then hold the center of town, and usually by the last 3-5 minutes of the quick battle, whoever was left on the red side would charge toward the objective, and promptly get mowed down. Not exactly(or even remotely) realistic, and not a tactic I would use in something like LLF's Ramadi map or anything similarly dense. But it CAN be done successfully.
  3. But I pre-ordered for the magical fancy spinning Tin-Box! What now??!!?!?
  4. Not much of a grey area for your idea of side hobbies, is there? As to the former, I'm not much of bird person, and my work schedule precludes parks for anything but weekends. As to the latter, I'm a 33 year old single male with an internet connection. So your suggestion comes a bit late.
  5. I still say they look more realistic then the "Dirt Barnacles" they had earlier in the Beta. And let's also remember that the Battlefront Art department is what, one or two people? And that was to do landscape, soldiers, tanks, AND all the progressively less detailed models of them for LOD purposes. So if the foxholes look a little odd, so be it, as long as they have FOW. Come to think of it, when was the last time you saw 3D foxholes in any game, let alone a wargame? CMBO's were sprites painted on the landscape, Theatre of War only has Trenches(which have no FOW). Not even the high end simulator-esque FPS' have foxholes, or at least in a "put one where you need them" ability.....
  6. DAMMIT! I just finished up Mass Effect 2, which kept my attention while waiting for CMBN to come out. And Il2COD has been pushed back a month(Although from everything I've seen it needs to be), so there is nothing to occupy my brain now. I've read Antony Beevor's "D-Day" THREE times while waiting for this game!!! In the words of the Python boys, "GET ON WITH IT!!!!!"
  7. Actually, all you will need to do is hit the Tank Hunter button, which splits off a two-man anti-tank section from the squad. Or at least that was what was available in CMSF.
  8. Yeah, both titles are quite appropriate. All I will say about the scenario itself was that I was very glad for M1A1s in overwatch. That is all.
  9. Don' forget that wonderful Marines campaign mission that centered around Khan Al Arous, a swervy s-bend on a main road heading SW to Damascus. They even modeled to castle and everything. I thought it was a beautiful map, and wondered if it had a real-life counterpart. Really beautiful work.
  10. Well, don't forget that there is an auto-choose function for having the PC randomly choose your units, with the ability thereafter to modify them. Just keep in mind that the smaller the unit size on auto-choose, the more likely you will get a unit selection that is less then balanced(for instance, in CMSF terms, a platoon of Humvees to take a town, a company of AT missile troops for attacking through a forest, etc.) CMSF had only the option to autochoose in it, which was Battlefront's response to the problem you are talking about. I think most would agree that the cure was 10 time worse then the problem.
  11. I'll just go ahead and make the assumption that the "one-way recon" people haven't tried CMSF or the demo. I'll just go ahead and let you know that this tactic will most likely not work for you anymore. With the relative spotting system in place now, The Stuart who so nobly sallies forth at top speed into the hinterland will probably not even see the tank or even first shot on your screen. Usually when ever I try this tactic in CMSF, the first thing I see is the Humvee pop with a cloud of smoke, possibly followed by flames and the black pillar of total-crew-death. If a crew member survives, the game might show the tank/AT weapon/crew that blew you away, but only for the amount of time it takes their machine-gun crews to slaughter you indiscriminately. So not a lot of recon to be gained, other then "Don't go there!" I suppose if you use a whole platoon of them for a real charge of the light brigade, the other tanks may identify and return fire on whatever devours the first of their kind in a spectacle of flame and consternation, but they won't necessarily identify any other units(unless they are also shooting at them, and even then thats not a given). Keep in mind I always play on Elite, so the spotting is a lot more rigorous then the other difficulty settings (except Iron of course). Maybe this tactic works then.
  12. And to think, at one point there was an actual girl on the forums.......
  13. Well, he did know French. And had at least enough game to pick up a mistress at one point in his life. So its not unheard of. I remember an interview with his eldest daughter where she saw him practicing his Scowls and "war faces" in the mirror, so there was a level of acting to his persona. To put it succinctly, he was born a rich dandy who was dyslexic and a taste for the classics. He MADE himself into the fire-breathing hard-ass we know.
  14. AND ALL OF THIS WILL BE FUELED BY THE POWER OF RAW UNCUT COCAINE!!!!!!!!!! Sorry, the all-caps was just too much fun to let go. Although it does convey a sense of enthusiasm.
  15. It is a fun speculation, but then again a higher command that was smart enough to realize that: 1. Running your economy at less-then-wartime production for five years of war is sheer idiocy 2.Being solely interested in expanding their little fiefdoms at the expense of greater good accomplishes very little would also be smart enough to not start the war in the first damn place. But I guess when your bureaucracy looks like the something out of the Five Families from The Godfather, you shouldn't expect much. But yes, it is fun to discuss irregardless.
  16. Whats I find interesting about the whole disparity between ATG kills claimed and the actual results found on the battlefield is that from hearing the reports of the Germans, from feldwebel to generalfeldmarschall, one would think the pilots claims to be the most accurate. The vexation and angst the Wehrmacht generated towards the Allied air force would almost have you believe they were the main reason they lost in the west. So while I don't think Tactical Air provided much in honest-to-god destroyed AFVs, the existance of so much air power on an almost constant basis was I think had a very palpable effect on Wehrmacht morale, even down to the tactical level. I wouldn't be surprised if crews abandoned their tanks just to get away from the firepower directed at them, irregardless of how effectual MG and Rocket fire would actually be.
  17. Hah! I guessed the right month! Truly I am a Prognosticator of Prognosticators.
  18. Damn straight! Isn't there ANY Beta-testers South of the Mason-Dixon? ANYBODY in the Florida Georgia area?
  19. In other words, playing Brits makes it more fair for the Syrians.
  20. Well, in CMSF you can count the muzzle flashes(or the shell casings, if your eyes are good enough or you use the zoom feature) and watch as he switches mags after 30 rds. Also, in CMSF you can watch the APC gunner open the hatch to reload the 40mm grenade launcher as it empties each ammo can. So I think its safe to say you will get your ping after every 8 rds. Going to 1:1 on infantry has made the small arms QUITE detailed.
