Sgt.Squarehead got a reaction from General Jack Ripper in Mosul (Iraq) The small red-headed child of an epic MOUT map!
They clearly needed @General Jack Ripper to take command.
It should be possible to do a lot more of this with the new engine, both @MOS:96B2P and I have been experimenting with using demo-charge equipped AI units on the map. At present you kind of need to customise the buildings for best effect, but with experimentation you can usually get them to do what you want without making it massively obvious what's afoot.
Just having 16 AI slots to play with will make a huge difference.....In Mosul my static units took up one slot, as did the (snowballed) VBIEDS, the initial attack wave took three slots and the (snowballed) tunnel rats used up the remainder.

Sgt.Squarehead reacted to MikeyD in Turkish Leopard 2A4 mod preview
Turkey crossing the Syrian border last January brought Leopard 2A4 onto the front page. I'm quickly whipping up a Turkish mod for the German vehicle for CMSF2.
I haven't uploaded a mod since before Repository went away. I'll have to pick a spot to upload to after CMSF2 comes out. It might possibly fit the CMSF1 model too, though I haven't tried.

Sgt.Squarehead got a reaction from sburke in CMBS bugs - are these fixed in relation to the new CMSF2? ( weapons ports etc )
This was my opinion too at first, although much more so for the T-90A/T-90AM than the mighty Abrams.....However I realised that I was basing my evaluation on my godlike view with no unit selected in Iron Mode, when I selected the vehicle in question and saw its 'perception' of the battlefield, the behaviour made a lot more sense.
Give it a try.
IMHO Iron Mode is both a very useful tool and by far the best way to play.
PS - Not saying I disagree BTW, merely that on reflection it's not quite as bad as I thought it was.

Sgt.Squarehead got a reaction from HerrTom in An der Schönen Blauen Dnjepr scenario
Wizardry? Where?
I rather fancy experimenting with something, big, unscripted and with a plausible force balance (ie: with no Oplots on holiday from Thailand).....This is the best example I know.
Don't expect any actual output (although I'll be happy to send you what I do), I'm still quite new to the later games.
PS - Wonder if you can paint triggers in water?

Couple of interesting bits in this piece on urban sieges in the Syria and Iraqi civil wars.
https://www.lrb.co.uk/v40/n14/patrick-cockburn/the-war-in-five-sieges
In every case, ground troops have only been able to win with the backing of airpower, artillery and advisers most usually supplied by the US-led coalition or Russia. Whether the fighting was in Ramadi and Mosul in Iraq or Aleppo and Damascus in Syria, the way the sieges were conducted was similar.
Few combat troops were used: no side could afford heavy losses in street battles with a well-trained enemy. The attackers relied heavily on shelling and bombing to clear the way or to batter the defenders into submission. It was a strategy that always succeeded in the end, but it had the inevitable cost... of causing great destruction and civilian loss of life.
In the final months of the sieges of Mosul and Raqqa the coalition bombing, and the Syrian and Iraqi shelling, became considerably more intense.... They had always been less capable than they claimed of locating the right target, and now they faced another problem: IS and other jihadi groups were showing great tactical ingenuity in fighting guerrilla war in the streets, inflicting heavy casualties on Iraqi army and SDF ground troops.
IS fighters moved swiftly on foot or by motorbike from house to house, cutting holes in walls and tunnels underground, making surprise attacks and avoiding surveillance from the air. Their sniper, mortar and mine-laying teams never stayed in one place for long: they would move on quickly from a house they had used as a base, leaving the civilian inhabitants to face coalition retaliation. Such tactics went a long way towards negating the advantages of the high-precision airstrikes.... In the end, maximum firepower was used to obliterate the last stubbornly defended IS enclaves, with no regard for the number of civilians killed.

Be my guest. I also plan on clearing up some issues like the slope at the riverbank and obstacles in the Dachas. I'm excited to see what your wizardry can do!

Sgt.Squarehead reacted to GAZ NZ in CMBS bugs - are these fixed in relation to the new CMSF2? ( weapons ports etc )
Its great we have a new game CMSF2 coming out
However as it is the same engine as CMBS and many of the same weapons will be used in that
I have to ask have the bugs been fixed for these as are present in CMBS?
and Is CMBS going to be patched?
How many of these weapons systemsare going over to CMSF2?
Observations from extensive play testing and many ladder games of CMBS since it was released
Take this on board when playing CMSF2
USA vehicles
M1167 Humvee
Must be manually shot - TOW doesn't engage enemy vehicles
M1 Tank inconsistent behavior
With Crack crew and high morale +2 ldr
MI spotted Enemy Rpg unit - M1 fired at them killing one and the Russian survivor ran away
But Tank spends the whole game panicked
M1 runs away from everything whole game - its a joke
In other games I take M1 and it's hit by 5 AT 13s and multiple RPGs etc keeps on going
Morale is fine - they are running same setup as previous example
Has happened in a few games
Another game my M1 is hit in same place - upper front turret just once by At13 and they bail
Its really inconsistent crew behavior sometimes / damage application
I do not use APS on M1 as I find it too over powered and unrealistic
I've seen my opponents M1 defeat 11+ AT14 and At13 shots shots with APS after being frontally Armour stripped from my 120mm Artillery and AA Tunguska fire
The APS still works
Russian - Ukraine Kit
BRDM 2 (AT-5B)
Doesn't shoot
( There needs to be a setup where the crew maybe get out - one observes ? the other is in car )
The whole thing doesn't work
Its like the US Humvee TOW
Russia Missing there heavy Mg equivalent 12.7×108mm NSV and KORD ( used in Syria )
Also KORD .50cal
No Modern Russian sniper rifles - eg OSV-96 or SVLK-14 Sumrak Twilight (Also Used in Syria )
Man Portable AT Missile Problems
AT13 At 14 AT7 and Skiff etc randomly just fly in random bizarre directions
Have used in all terrains
This is constantly occuring
In Open areas with no obstruction to break wire etc
It happens frequently and makes taking AT Infantry vs Tanks in open areas pointless
it happens often making it pointless taking AT weapons only unless in built up areas
You just use RPGs ( most reliable in the game engine )
I see Crews with AT 13 AT7 etc launcher also ran back and forth in building trying to Target tank which was clear to shoot St with Blue Los and lots of windows
They did this for 4 minutes - 4 times after stopping them after each minute
They were spotted and died
Has happened many times - yes i've read heated discussions over AI path mapping etc on this forums but this is shooting
Ukraine Corsar randomly goes off in weird directions also
Crew are not suppressed
Doesn't happen as much but happens more then it should
I have games where they work ok and others where every shot missed fired from multiple units
Same Crew experience
Russian Grenade Launcher single guy ( unit ) has launcher and cannot deploy
He cannot move after his final move point ends
Ukraine And Russian vehicles and in one case a US Bradley
Just sit and stare at enemy and don't shoot ( yes im aware it happens randomly as they dropped there smokes or drink ) but sometimes its just stupid
Biggest disappointment is RPO-A and M Shmel I took 15 units of these in one urban fight 2 units fired the whole game as squads who were crack or vet panicked when shot at or never fired when not being shot at was a joke They just sat and watched enemy They had great command etc high motivation Of the two who fired minimal effect on building
They should vapourise people inside building and set it on fire Instead tiny bit of flame and 1-2 guys of enemy 5 man team died and they were shot back at from inside building and they died As a general comment I've been playing ladder games with CMBS for a long time Players have been leaving/dropping off our ladder group due to the general bugs with no updates and overpowered US gear and M1 issues Its either super over powered or just stupid with panic etc Those of us who still play generally only play Russia vs Ukraine games now as a result of the US imbalance
I try to use different Setups as a top player to challenge myself but with the AT bugs as i discussed I have to take tanks now with AT weapons being very unreliable Russian kit needs to be updated also It will be interesting to see how this all works in CMSF2 if its being ported over from CMBS Especially with AT weapons as they have done considerable damage in Syria vs Armour How this game shows it will be interesting vs CMBS
I support battlefront having bought CM since it was first made but bugs are bugs and I hope these are sorted for CMSF2 Appreciate it if CMBS is also fixed in the process Cheers -

Two roughly equal, but easily distinguishable Uncon factions would be a very handy thing to have.....When they're not fighting Red or Blue, they're fighting each other.
Flexibility is king IMHO, the more we can do, the more we will.....CM players seem to be built that way.

Oh, and BTW, I'm in the middle of whipping up last minute texture changes to German Leopard 2s. I think after the game's released I'll upload a Turkish Leopard 2A4 texture as a 3rd party mod. So people can play Turkey vs ISIS, Turkey vs Kurds, Turkey vs US...

I liked your mix and match Uncons mod, with Combatants a 50/50 mix of masked and unmasked (Spy) guys. That's how they generally fight when TV cameras aren't filming.

Sgt.Squarehead reacted to Mord in New Uncon Models?
Fighters (not shown in Mikey's pic) have access to recoilless guns, Atgm, and a tripod mounted Dshk in CMSF, as well as technical mounted versions, plus a Zu-23-2 technical, so they should have them in SF2. I am hoping they'll have some onboard mortars (I thought Steve said they would). Fighters represent well financed terrorist organizations or foreign insurgents while the plain Combatants (above) represent every day type Syrians that decided to take up arms against the invaders so they probably won't have as much (or any) team oriented weapons. Though they do have technicals with light and heavy MGs, and a recoilless rifle. That's just my guess going by what's in SF1.

Any way we can get some screens of the new Uncons? It's been 50 days since the screen shots in the CMSF2 thread where Steve said they needed to be fixed. MikeyD has since stated they were fixed. It doesn't look like Bil is gonna have any in his AAR thread, so. I am only asking because I know @Sgt.Squarehead is dying to see them. I don't think he should have to suffer any longer than necessary.

Eh, I don't see any harm in posting a pict since early models had already appeared in the AAR.

Sgt.Squarehead got a reaction from MOS:96B2P in New Scenario: Tactical Operations Center
Glad you got it out there @MOS:96B2P.....I too would like to have done more in testing, but real life happens and it's a pretty tricky scenario to test.
I reckon having the wider group play it is the best bet, anything we missed will be picked up on, but from my own experience I could see you'd honed it to the point that the main limitation was the engine itself.....This scenario so needs Uncons, on both sides, just think of the damage you could do then!
Massive respect for what you've created here.....It's revitalised my interest in CM:BS, if only as a testing ground for CM:SF II and IMHO it demonstrates the best possible use of the engine's capabilities right now, without being a serious victim to its major flaw.

Sgt.Squarehead reacted to A Canadian Cat in Canadian Defense - CMSF 2 BETA AAR #2 (Quick Battle)
Initial situation
This AAR is being played using the Quick Battle system from the v4 engine in the new version of Shock Force. We are playing a Red probe with Bil taking the Syrians vs Canadians commanded by myself. The back story we decided on is that the NATO advance is proceeding well and the Canadian battle group has been assigned to flank protection for the main advance. D Company has been directed to take up positions around a village on the main East West road in the area.
Taking the walk through the village to meet with the local elders was something that Capt. Leslie actually enjoyed. The security situation for these types of meetings was much better here than in Afghanistan where, as a platoon commander, often had to provide security for the CO in one of these meetings. Over there it was always a nerve racking time. Here, today, his men had taken up their positions already and there was no love for the Assad regime around here. There was no love for the Assads anywhere actually – even in the enclave where his family drew the most support it was based on fear not love. So his walk today was pretty safe. Walking through the village reminded him of the last time he was in Syria. When he was just a boy visiting his father who was stationed on the Golan Heights as a UN Observer. Back then this trip to Syria was an exciting event. He got to fly on Hercules from Germany to Damascus where his Dad’s apartment was. The trip had made an impression. Not just the Roman ruins and the amazing castle Krak des Chevaliers (and having lived in the UK a few years earlier he knew castles) but it was really the people that impressed him the most. They were so friendly and open. It was this trip and listening to his father tell the stories of visiting with security guards on his way home each night that cemented in him the certain knowledge that you can go anywhere in the world and the regular people you meet are more like you then they are different.
This meeting was just a formality but an important one. They would not be here for long and the Canadians had no mandate to provide any kind of assistance this was just to introduce the force that would be on their door steps for a while and point out that most likely nothing eventful would happen today, tomorrow or the next day. Capt. Leslie had put off this meeting for a hour because he had to spend time on the radio sorting out their artillery support. They were not expecting any action and so had only been assigned only a battery of light artillery and some Battalion mortars but he wanted to make sure they were ready with solutions plotted just to be sure. For some reason there had been a delay. Usually the artillery guys were ready before his FO was but today somehow the assignments had been confused and no battery thought they were supposed to be on call for D Co.. He had the reputation not as a rising star but a solid cross the t’s dot the i’s find a solution get it done officer. And he had done so again. Other officers liked him because he did his homework and was fair even when he was pushing for something. He didn’t make a big production but he didn’t back down either. He remembered his Dad used to say “not everyone can be a rising star, those stars need good officers to get their jobs done”. His Dad’s other advice when he joined up as a junior officer was “always listen to your Sergeants and Warrant Officers, they are the ones that have the experience know how to help you find solutions and keep you from screwing up”. He had taken the advice to heart.
Force selection:
The Quick Battle system is still not complete so don’t read much into what you see other than the happy path I will describe J. As you can see the usual points panel is there along with the selected force’s flag and available branches. The various units might still need tweaking in the QB list and single vehicles and teams is not officially complete and the points might change. All the usual caveats apply. No one has tested the auto pick force make up yet – although the three times I used it during testing it actually did a good job. At any rate before release this stuff will be tweaked some more.
Similar to the CMBS game there are combined force battle groups available. That is where I will start:
Defending in a Medium Probe lets you purchase about a mechanized company or so. I start with paring back to D Company and a platoon of tanks. Then I do something I started doing recently – renaming the top commander on QB battle field after myself. I think it is more fun to think of yourself down there in the game. Hopefully no one thinks it is too arrogant since I have never served as more than a truck driver but I’m adding a little colour this time based on an alternate reality where I joined up back in university like I very nearly did.
Now the hard choices. I am pretty certain that Bil will be bringing armour to this and those T72s are every bit as deadly to the Leos as the Leos are to the T72s. That means I need to be able to handle enemy armour. So, to get the points room to have some support I chose not give up a tank but instead gave up a platoon of infantry. Therefore the basic force is two platoons of infantry and one troop of tanks.
With that I’ll settled I chose to keep two of the battalion’s AT LAVs, one battery of mortars and a sniper team. Never leave home without your sniper team.
