  1. No, no, do tell about your black powder collection I may prefer WWII for my wargaming, but I've always loved those old guns. Loading is a mission, cleaning is a mission - must be love. Please
  2. Sounds like you've adequately listed the rebuff. Makes sense to me too, I can live with grass growing through my foxhole if it means the enemy wont know it's there.
  3. Heh, I'm also in Scotland and wishing I could make the trip. Ah well
  4. Well, there is a chance that with the new spotting system, the scouts go to ground ( or may even be injured by the HE ) and don't spot the AT gun. The opponent may know there's one "somewhere" there, but not with the sort of precision of CMx1. Come to think of it though, my Borgs are broken in CMx1, they never seem to spot anything until it's way too late :-D Still, my hope is that there is some sort of "Cover Armour" only command. Hope hope.
  5. Got nothing against the mechanics - especially after seeing the AAR battle, I'm positively drooling over the mechanics. I'm just one of those wargamers who kinda loses interest in the periods post WWII. I'm assuming that a lot of the guys who've stuck with CMx1 are the same.
  6. Which begs the question ( if anyone knows or is allowed by NDA to comment ) - is it possible to keep one side of the "L" from firing until the column is alongside them in CM:BN in order to pull off such an ambush - or is that beyond the abilities of the AI ? In CMx1, the first guys to have their covered arc breached would start firing and give the game away before the trap was properly set.
  7. Oh you don't want to admit that - I almost got lynched when I got here
  8. Well, obviously - in CMx1 too I realise my question was founded in the CMx1 need to get around the "out of command" penalty - which was the command delay - but which isn't in CM:BN, right ? So what is the penalty for being "Out of Command" in CM:BN ? Is there some other kind of penalty ? Morale ?
  9. Surely in a WWII context though, the Company commander could order such a squad to perform some action ? Or is this a "fudge" that we've become used to using in CMx1 ?
  10. Seems to me that this is the ideal solution ( not even on release, but at some stage perhaps ). The tool is then in place and the users can make of it what they will. Even within the limitations of CMx1, dedicated individuals have co-ordinated enjoyable campaigns - but it is a massive amount of work. An import/export facility could alleviate this whilst not taking the onus off the users.
  11. Exactly - I play wargames because it's like elaborate chess - ie. far more variables. I want to be able to try to outthink my opponent. I want to be able to apply my theories to the simulated battlefield to see if I did outthink my opponent or if he outthought me. Either way, it's an intellectual exercise which is also fun. The morale effects on my pixeltruppen are a factor I have to take into account. It's not meant to be real, it's meant to be based on reality.
  12. Agreed, but if I'm rushing around in real time, I don't think I'll get much feel for the battlespace or have time to formulate tactics that don't stink. What I like about WeGo is the way it practically eliminated all the drawbacks of turn based games and still allowed you time to think. I don't want to knock real time, I just don't see myself or many of the wargamers I know, using it - for the reasons stated.
  13. I certainly hope that BF don't regard Real Time as their ideal, WeGo may be PBEM only, but that is still preferred ( IMO ) if you want to have control over all of the battle. I can't see how anyone can handle more than a couple of platoons in real time without having to leave a good portion of the troops either forgotten or on some form of "move to Contact" and leave it up to the TacAI - in which case ... why are we playing it ? And who wants to lose a battle to someone who is simply ... faster with a mouse ?
  14. Agree, that answer makes a lot of sense, however, what sort of effectiveness would a truck driver have in using an MG42 - ie. would he be regarded as "Green" or something similar to reflect his "Mostly non-combatant" status ? He's not likely to have been trained on an MG42... I realise there may be NDA issues here, but that sort of thing is likely to crop up in battles, we're all gamey bastiges
  15. Hi people Ever since a recent PC rebuild, I've been getting this problem on CMAK and CMBB. Basically the PC stops for a few seconds while playing CM, then a bunch of wrong textures are displayed. ALT-TAB out of CM and back in makes the textures go normal again. However until the PC is rebooted applications close and start (including ALT-TAB out of and into CM) with a recognizable delay of several seconds. On a couple of occasions I've even had the PC BSOD after some time complaining about nv4_disp.dll I've reinstalled both games, have subsequently upgraded my graphics card and installed new drivers yet this has not cured the problem. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know, I'll try pretty much anything at this stage. Thanks Example :
  16. Lurk lurk ... great news, thanks ... lurk lurk.
  17. As I've just finished David M. Glantz's book "Kharkov 1942 - Anatomy of a Military Disaster Through Soviet Eyes" - Ian Allen publishing, I'm keen to play out some of this. The scope is too big for CMC, but a small section of it would be extremely good to play - probably the final "Closing the gap" by 14 Pz, or the Soviet breakthrough attempts that ran into the 1st Mountain Division. Ooops ! I think I just messed up my "lurker" status... [ March 02, 2006, 09:48 AM: Message edited by: Baneman ]
  18. Is barrel overheating modelled to cause jams - ie. if I give my HMG a short covered arc or a Hide command every so often, will this reduce the chance of a jam, or am I just reducing valuable firing opportunities ?
  19. Interesting thread. However, I am confused as to why some board members label others "Nazi-apologists" for implying/inferring/accusing the Allies of war crimes. The fact that the Allies did commit some atrocities does not mean that the Axis didn't. And so far, none of the posts about Allied war crimes have attempted to state that.
  20. I don't think interest is dead - lurkers like me pop in every couple of weeks or so to check it out. But in the absence of news, little to discuss as mentioned above. Definitely looking forward to it though.
  21. Hmmm, funny that, I don't need to play the hard scenarios to get a whippin'.
  22. To be honest, I'm not particularly interested in Modern warfare. However, I'll probably buy SM:SF anyway because ... 1) I could be wrong, maybe I will like it. 2) It supports Battlefront who will then bring out a WWII version. Everyone wins. Besides, I prefer the secrecy. Now that I know about CMC, I want it NOW
  23. Well, my military experience consists of 1 week in camp and 3 months in hospital ( mental ward ). Yes, I was faking it That was still in the days of apartheid in South Africa and I had no desire to be in Angola or shooting at rioters for that matter. I just lacked the guts to be a conscientious objector. So I am a faux-soldier at best.
  24. That has to be the best thing I've ever heard about Starforce
  25. Shermans burn ? Those uber-tough-as-nails-instant-kill-devices ? I'd love to see one burn in the game. Right now if my oppo buys one, I'll know to flee the battlefield immediately.
