Unlike a fascist country like Russia, where people look up to their dear leader and follow him unconditionally while all his bros are permanently in butt-kissing mode - in Ukraine Zelenskyy can't just decide to call a "cease fire", there's been (and will be) too much blood spilled - neither military nor people will ever agree to see russians come back again and continue what they've started - while doing a full scale genocide on the territories they've grabbed.
Again you mistakenly think that it's about grabbing some territories for putin. While it's certainly an objective - his main objective is to get rid of Ukrainians as people.

Don't underestimate 40 yr old farmer's. With motivation a d technical skills from maintaining their own machinery they can be a touch f*cking bunch. There's men back home in Ireland who I could totally see going about this in a calm, ruthless manner.

I hope these UKR infantry attacks don't get caught by russian artillery.  They hopefully have enough missiles to fight off armor & helicopters, but arty could be ugly.  Ambushes are a lot safer than attacks, as all us CM folks know.

I thi k that it's also critical that officers and NCIS who fought in 2014 have moved up in ranks since then, getting trained along the way.
I don't know what the promotion rate is - but I'm guessing a UKR Capt in 2014, losing his mind at the stupidity of Division command, is now one of those Division/BTG commanders, and has an entirely different mindset and ability to react.
@Haiduk does this make sense? Are there a high proportion of 2014 vets in the middle/upper ranks now?

Here’s some more food for thought. I, as a former U.S. Marine can no more play the Russian Campaign with the thought processes of a Russian than a former Russian military man can play the U.S. Campaign from a Western thought process. I freely admit this, so the outcomes of my missions as RA are irrevocably skewed by my training. I recognize and accept this inability, but I cannot change it.

As I've been putting it to people, a Russo-Japanese War but ending in a Tet rather than a Tsushima.

Not too long ago people were lamenting the billions spent in Afghanistan trying to build a modern army in the image of the west and what a spectacular failure it was.
Now we're seeing another army built in the image of the west and its a spectacular success.
Both instances are going to be the subject of a lot of studies in the future.
 

My view is 100% the other way on Xi attacking Taiwan. This has been a brutal demonstration of what can happen to your plan for a "short, victorious war". And Taiwan is ten or a hundred times harder. A ~hundred miles of unfriendly ocean, and infinitely better defensive terrain when you get there. Helicopter born assaults have been demonstrated to just not be a thing anymore. Ponder transports going down with a thousand troops each on them, the bodies washing up on the Chinese coast. If you do win all you get is an expensive, and violently unhappy ruin. Xi is great many very bad things, but stupid isn't one of them. Xi also hasn't been at the center of the self licking ice cream cone of what he wants to hear for long enough to lose his marbles, yet.

HOLY F-K Geoff-L!  you are right!  This totally justifies an unprovoked armed invasion of conquest and the shelling of civilian populations centers!  Thanks for setting us all to rights on this!  Wow, your keen legal eye is just what's needed so folks can see thru to the real culprit here!
