CM Helper or CM2 Helper fix
GreenAsJade replied to Talespin Jim's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
Hi Guys, The best way to help me work on problems like these, without loosing track of them, is to use Help->Report Bug in CMH (as long as CMH is actually working). Then I get a ticket and we get to work through it together till it's solved. And you might have to remind me by email if I seem to be taking too long GaJ -
We Band Of Brothers is another good place to find good opponents...

Will the QB total unit cost error ever be fixed?
GreenAsJade replied to Placebo's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
LOL - classic case of "that's not a bug, that's a feature". It's been that way since CMx1 -

What's good, and not good, about CMMODS?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in CM Red Thunder Maps and Mods
On the topic of preview pictures - we'll try and do better there, however I thought it worth pointing out that in the list-of-mods view, the preview picture is a link to a bigger version... probably should have that same feature on the individual mod details page. GaJ -
Roger, cool, no problemo

Hey Brent, What's the bump ... bumping? jdh's problem was solved, as mentioned above. If you have a problem, the best way to report it is described here. If I'm not responding, by all means ping me. ... or, if you're just reminding people that CMH exists, and they should be using it ... then no worries Cheers, GaJ

Thanks again for all your help. Hopefully I have thanked each of you individually as well (at least once!) - if I didn't, I certainly meant to. I thought you might be interested to see the download data: So far, in May, you guys have downloaded 920GB from CMMODS... GaJ

Yeah, it'd be nice for sure.

Bil v C3K AAR – Germans v SMGs in Woods
GreenAsJade replied to Bil Hardenberger's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
Just reposting this to make sure it's clear this isn't a waste of time! It's a fascinating exercise. And one of the MOST IMPORTANT things I've learned from it (and my previous encounters with Bil) is this In this example, the reason that the SMGs are "not unbeatable", is because the goal was set accordingly. If you said to me "SMGs are not unbeatable in the forest", I would have thought you meant that you could hold against them. But the winning commander chooses his battle then wins it, eh! GaJ -
Bil v C3K AAR – Germans v SMGs in Woods
GreenAsJade replied to Bil Hardenberger's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
Wow - that's not what I took away from it. What you showed us was an immensely valuable display of how to trade space for time. But you hardly put up a fight - really, you just ran away slowly. If the goal of the Russians was to take the forest, then they won.... at a cost, but, they won. I for one came away from this episode feeling like the contention is very much substantiated... if this is all that the best player on the board can do against Russian SMGs, then they are unbeatable! [RELEASED] Kieme's new modular building add on 4

Those windows are awesome! -
Another issue with small scenarios is that they focus people's attention right where the engine is going to have the most difficulty: representation of individual details. "Hey, why did my unbuttoned tank not see that guy as it went through town?". These become much more significant as you have less and less units in play. GaJ
-
If I'm understanding correctly, this is simply a suggestion for some new small scenarios? The time limit is pretty arbitrary: simply write in your scenario that you are expected to complete it in 10 minutes, if that's the deal. Why not make these scenarios, put them out there, and have everyone holler for shorter time limits if it really seems needed after playing these scenarios? GaJ

http://webandofbrothers.yuku.com/ also sounds like your kind of place... GaJ

Bil v C3K AAR – Germans v SMGs in Woods
GreenAsJade replied to Bil Hardenberger's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
Entirely unscientific, but my recent experience is that the Germans can area fire all they like, but chances of hitting appear too low - you can't establsih _where_ to area fire into, and the sneaky SMGs somehow dodge away from the area fire. Once LOS is established, the Germans are dead. Maybe I should have brought up my trucks, and been way more profligate with ammo! GaJ -
Bil v C3K AAR – Germans v SMGs in Woods
GreenAsJade replied to Bil Hardenberger's topic in Combat Mission Red Thunder
I guess we didn't see the original challenge, but what Bill said at the beginning of this thread was I think this thread is demonstrating that. Exchanging terrain for time is not really "beating" the SMG guys is it? And even Bil says that instead of attacking them ... ... all of which confirms the premise: you can't beat the Russian SMGs in the forest... GaJ -
What's good, and not good, about CMMODS?
GreenAsJade replied to GreenAsJade's topic in CM Red Thunder Maps and Mods
CMMODS is actually only a MODS site by design. This is because when CMMODS was developed, the place for scenarios and missions was The Scenario Depot. A long time ago now. A hole emerged when CMx2 came along and The Scenario Depot did not move to include CMx2. This hole will be plugged when the next evolution of CMMODS comes along: new, low cost (hopefully free) infrastructure, and scenario/mission support. GaJ -
Hi All, As I mentioned in another thread, work is afoot to move CMMODS to a new, less costly, home, and to expand what it does/holds. It won't be the same code/design at the new place, for various reasons. So it seems like a good time to ask: what is good, and what is not so good, about CMMODS? What should we "make sure we don't break" in the transition? Thanks, GaJ
-
Hey Oddball - you're right! Thanks to everyone who's lept in to help - CMMODs future is secured again. The family treasurer has been tolerating the costs, indulging my CM hobby, over the years, but this month's spike was going to be a drama. I'm quite not living like a king, but your response in this time of need has well and truly established that CMMODS can keep going, at least till we get a new less costly home ready(*). Thanks again! GaJ. (*) On this topic - one of the reasons I have hosted CMMODS at Heroku/Amazon, and paid for it, up till now is the scalability. Unless I'm mistaken, CMMODS withstood the major peak in load with barely a blip. And if we wanted, we could pay more to have even more power available to serve it. It's an interesting excercise finding another cheaper place that can offer the same...

Hi All, As you'd expect, there's been a rush on CMMODs the last couple of months, with all the CMRT goodies there. This was reflected in the bill I got this month - $150, ouch! 7x the normal monthly bill. A few of you have kindly donated from time to time to these running costs, and I wouldn't ask you for more. What I would ask is that if you haven't made a donation, now would be a great time to do it. 500 of you downloaded JuJu's interface. If only half of you donated $1 the costs would be covered for a few months to come. The reality is that less that 5% people will respond to a call like this, so if you can donate a few dollars right now I'd appreciate it! Thanks! GaJ (Note: I'm also working with another generous person to move the Mods to infrastructure he can provide for free, so I don't have to make requests like this - but this as you can imagine is no small undertaking, and is perhaps still a little ways off yet).

Just a brief note to let y'all know that this was due to the configuration of jhd's install (Install->Edit) not pointing properly to the Installation Executable. I think this is more of an issue for CMFI, which is the one where BFC introduced the new layout of folders: CM Helper definitely needs this set correctly. GaJ

I see that in the log... I'll be danged, that's wierd! Looking into it now...
