  1. You should also consider the "High Contrast" terrain mods as an altertaive to grid, especially for CMAK (where there is a pretty complete set). You have to be logged in to CMMODS to see this example picture.... this one maybe shows the effect even better. GaJ [ July 08, 2006, 03:57 AM: Message edited by: GreenAsJade ]
  2. Thanks for taking the bother to post Salkin - glad you enjoyed them. The ROW V AARS are all posted here. Lots of good ones in there, and mine are there as well Let us know what you think! GaJ
  3. I hope it was clear: the FO must have LOS to the TARGET when the SPOTTING ROUND falls (irrespective of where it falls). I know that this is what Descher meant, I'm just not sure if it was 100% clear (The most useful aspect of this discovery is that the FO does _not_ have to have LOS at the time that the barrage is called. He only has to get into LOS by the time the spotting rounds come. Useing this knowledge (ordering a strike on an unspotted area, then spotting it) was coined as a "Wicky Strike" because I think it was Wicky who first accurately described it) GaJ
  4. I will try logging as soon as I remember I have a 2Ghz Pentium M in a Dell 9300 with 1Gb memory, NVidia Geforce Go 6800 video. Has anyone actually used CM plus GD successfully?? Cheers, GaJ
  5. NG: check PBEM Helper ... put all that fiddling with files behind you GaJ
  6. No, I mean that while CM is running, and I'm experiencing these delays, I can't have system monitor or anything else showing because CM is "on top" in the display. All other applications are "behind" it.
  7. I like to think I don't get all pissy Ask anyone I've played: they all know how I get when I loose. I don't think I can think of anyone who knows how I get when I win Thanks for the offer - I actually have 254 fantastic opponents over at We Band Of Brothers, with the added advantage that when I play them my games are recorded in the stats ... always interesting to look back on, and compare how you're going with others. You should pop over there some time Cheers, GaJ
  8. 41 Would it be fair to say that "communities" tend to be populated by older "more stable" folk, while the youngsters are out trying everything and moving from one to the next? This is my experience of both online gaming and real-world clubs (my gliding club being a key example). Every now and then there's a rare younster who knows what they like (eg gliding or CM) and sticks long enough to get good at it and bring some welome fresh air into the old crusty place Gliding and CM are similar in that they take some dedication to actually get good at... but they're both fun while you're learning! GaJ
  9. While TPG and TSDII are outstanding resources for their primary purpose, you'd be better off challenging one of the regulars in the forums rather than using the opponent finder. I've had far more dropout than completed games from that source. GaJ.
  10. I suck. I hate it when I keep losing. Walpurgis says you're only learning when you're losing. Man, I've learned a lot. But I keep losing. The wierd thing is I've learned enough to beat someone who really is new, and sucks even more, yet there's still an infinity of people out there who beat me. If you only play the AI, you can be sure you suck. You haven't even started to learn. I also hate it when I think my opponent isn't enjoying it. That's usually when he's losing. I don't know why I play this game! GaJ [ June 15, 2006, 03:11 AM: Message edited by: GreenAsJade ]
  11. Or, for an excellent club, guaranteed no-drop-out games and a certain level of discretion about who gets in, come call in to We Band Of Brothers ... the best CM club, certainly not "less active"! GaJ
  12. I run CM at 1600x1200 and its fine. That's bigger than 1440x990, by far. I'm running it on a 1920x1200 screen: it "postboxes" (IE the extra width is just black). I had to set this up properly: I told my display adapter to use "centered output" instead of "display scaling" or "fixed ratio scaling". It means "display the application in the resolution it wants to be displayed in". It works fine: maybe that's the setting you need. Gaj
  13. How do I ask it? CM always wants to be on top, doesn't it? thanks for your interest!
  14. Some time ago I reported that I thought Google Desktop slowed CMxx load. I still think that is the case. However, a new version of Google Desktop has taken it to an altogether different level. With GD loaded, CMxx is almost unplayable. Each keystroke, in turn plotting, seems to take 1-2 seconds before CMxx actually gets it. Exiting GD at any time (before or duing CMxx play) solves the problem. Dang - if only PBEMH was still being developed, maybe Fuerte could have made it exit GD on entry to CMxx! I can't live at work without GD. I can't live at play without CMxx. But I only have one laptop! Dang! GaJ
  15. I was once standing right by a highway when a tumbleweed rolled across into the path of an oncoming bus. It was utterly obliterated - just snapped out of existence completely... quite chilling at the time. GaJ
  16. Well, I'm sure he can post whatever he likes, it's his forum I just hadn't realised that this announcement was posted in all the forums, and wondered why it stood out in this one. It turns out the reason is that in the other forums other topics move to the "most recent" list, while this stale ole forum left this one at the top GaJ
  17. There are two separate issues here: what the shell will hit, and what it will damage with its blast. It is definitely the case that a shell landing near any unit - AFV or Inf, friendly or not, will damage it if the blast is big. Thi is what Vixen is reporting. This is different to DerK's point, which is that in flight the shell will never hit anyhting other than the ground (or a building) except the thing it was targetted against. This is definitely the case. This is because it is only "ground" (including buildings) that occupies space in the CM calculations. It's done this way because ground (and buildings) don't move, so they can have a static "map" of where all the obstacles are, and do tricks to calculate collisions quickly. If they had to include moving objects in this "map" lots of tricks would not be possible. Note that it is likely that whether the shell will hit is detemined _before_ calculating the trajectory . IE 0) Make sure target is still in LOS. 1) Decide (dice roll) if this is going to be a hit 2) Only if it's a miss, calculate trajectory to see what it's going to hit. 3) Calculate BANG radius and see who is damaged inside it. Saves collision calculations wiith ground/buildings if you already know it's a hit. This will explain why sometimes shells seem to go through the corners of buildings: the target was in LOS, so they didn't bother with a object collision calculation. (The rationalisation is that the shell went through a wall or window... yeah right). Just my guess. GaJ. [ March 17, 2006, 09:24 PM: Message edited by: GreenAsJade ]
  18. Fair comment about natural curiosity: that one I'll pay, and share in it. I can imagine that the reason the "unhide" might not be appear saved is that it hasn't happened yet. They are hiding and the first thing they will do is unhide, but no time passed, so they didn't get a chance? Just a thought. Can spotting be revived as an explanation if you take into account Borg spotting? I'm not sure if this is really a good path to follow, because Borg Spotting is a phenomenon of the TacAI during turn run calculation ... if should apply to AI and human units equally, right? hmmm... GaJ
  19. It's like asking "does the AI in an FPS game cheat with aiming". The question hardly even has a real meaning ... the AI is not the same as a person, so it hardly can work in the same way. I know that BFC have said that the AI is constrained to work with mostly the same information that humans have... but I'll tell you this: I don't think this is done through some strange idea of "fairness" or cheating". It's done for realism. If the AI had access to too much knowledge, it would behave in unrealistic ways. That will be the only real reason why they would limit the information it bases its decisions on. As to whether it makes "orders" style decisions during turn calculation: I really doubt it, simply because that would be a massive new bit of functionality that is no use whatsoever in the 2 player game. Hard to see why they would go to that trouble... GaJ
  20. The TacAI is real time in the sense that it has up-to-the-second information to decide what to do next. That's it job, duh! It does it for the forces on both sides... The question being posed here is whether the AI has the opportunity to change orders for troops during the calculation pass that humans don't have. The other question is why would you care? GaJ
  21. But my question is not "is it so or is it not?". My question is "Who cares?" Or more specifically "Why on earth would you care?". If the AI gives you a good fight, then isn't that what you paid for? If you want to fight against human-like behaviour ... go fight a human. There are plenty about... GaJ
