  1. I will be very surprised if that small caliber did harm to friendlies. I was certain that we had extensive discussions on this board that "light weapons" may suppress friendlies, but never harm them. And since both Blue and Red use a lot of 7.62 or similar... However, I too have seen friendly casualties that could have resulted from firing 7.62 near them... I always thought maybe there was a hidden sniper someplace.
  2. I imagine it will be the same as when US Stingers started shooting down their choppers in Afghanistan. So long as there is plausible deniability etc...
  3. I remember the 8Kx4K as I designed an operation that sorta simulated the battles in N. Africa between Rommel and Eighth Army from El Agheila to almost El Alamein. The 8Kx4K map looked like that part of N. Africa (at greater reduced scale of course). But, I couldn't find anyone with a powerful enuff computer to test it lol. So, shelved it...
  4. IIRC vehicles in CM1 do not block LOS, (only smoke if burning).
  5. I think most of us were hoping for a simple campaign program/system to create CM1 tactical battles - rather like the method in the "Close Combat" series. However, it appeared that the programmer(s) were attempting to create an actual standalone operational game that could be sold separately. And that was too complex and foundered. Am sure that many would be thrilled by a campaign overlay routine, look at how many are using cardboard games etc to accomplish that. It would revitalize CM1. But, of course that's not what BFC wants...
  6. Re spotting and arcs: "They affect spotting only in so much as they affect facing." This is quite important as I usually use arcs to "tell" my guys which direction to look in rather than 360 degrees. I have always assumed that with an arc, everyone is looking in that direction so spotting should be significantly enhanced.
  7. Maybe it's just my monitors, but I find the night scenarios impossible to play cos I can't see anything. So, I have to up the Gamma and brightness so it looks like (washed out) day just in order to play. Similarly, I can barely see anything in the picture posted in the previous message. Can everyone else see it ok?? I am unsure what is the point of night scenarios if one can't see anything.
  8. Great development schedule. By the time we get to the post-mortem releases the bugs may be worked out then?
  9. I never knew that the largest maps were restricted to Operations only... I think it's 8K x 4K. So, one can't get that size in regular battles?
  10. Amazing footage. If one could turn em against each other in the other countries, Iran, Iraq etc that would solve a lot of headaches. The Brits used to be good at that sort of thing. BTW: Any way one can get that music for CMSF loading screens etc?
  11. Regrettably, good AI is probably the most difficult and expensive aspect of developing a game. Hence the rise of multiplayer... substituting the rare. expensive good AI with common, inexpensive and stupid people.
  12. It also usually takes time to establish contact so make sure your radio was there for a turn or two.
  13. Lots of CM1 oppos at Band of Brother site as well: http://webandofbrothers.yuku.com/
  14. I looked at the ad description on another trailer and it describes it as "Real Time Strategy". I'm guessing you didn't look at the promotional material. And no - don't want to play yet another RT strategy game thank you...
  15. Other than in medicine and other such professions, there are smart people who can do wonderful jobs without the "license" that a piece of paper called a degree confers. Conversely there are many idiots other there who have real degrees who are lousy at their jobs. In may day we were told that education was a goal in itself. These days a degree is sold as a way to make more money and that's about it. So the universities have basically become tech colleges. Then the problem becomes that, other for a very fortunate few who get scholarships, the majority of kids who get to the best universities are children of privilege. Hence a class system emerges and solidifies an unassailable position at the top for the wealthy with the decreased social mobility that we now experience. This "licensing" of jobs has gotten out of hand - eg: the fight that the cosmetologists made/continue to press to prevent anyone cutting hair or doing make-up professionally without expensive years of training and a diploma.
  16. Shame it's only another RT strategy game. Not sure what makes it different from all the others other than nicer graphics. It doesn't look like one can get down to ground level - maybe 30 feet high POV(?)
  17. +1 to that. Am amazed at the quantity and quality of new CM1 mods that are still being produced, even for CMBO!
  18. The books were very descriptive and I have a good imagination, so I was duly horrified at what those guys in the Pacific went through before the TV series. The books made the European Theater (West Front at least) look like a walk in the park.
  19. Doing well in any game means playing well vs "the system/engine" and it takes time to learn/understand what the "system" is likely to do in all/most circumstances. In CM1 players developed massive lists and charts of how units would act, what their LOS is in various terrains etc. CMSF nerfed that and deprived us of that sort of info to make it appear more realistic so it could potentially be used as a milpro training tool. (And now we're stuck with that policy in CMBN.) (Ok, I'm off traveling for a few months now heh...)
  20. Playing my first CMSF game (the xnt "A Helluva Road Opening") in years due to CMBN burn-out and have forgotten stuff. What is the largest cal gun/MG one can fire/use with no FF risk? eg: 50 cal/12mm ok, but 20mm not?
  21. No plans to visit Russia any time soon then... lol
  22. Ok, I musta gone to kitchen for a snack during those bits...
  23. ...And slipping down muddy hills that have been rained on for weeks, right through maggoty decomposing bodies that can't be buried... That was one of the fun parts I don't recall making it into "The Pacific". Shame that show was not a patch on BOB. The Pacific writers just weren't able to create good memorable characters that were easily distinguishable from each other.
