  1. Thanks for the comments and clarification. I have tried pairing a HQ with my defending fighters, and it makes quite a difference. Haven't tried it with bombers of my own, yet. Makes a good example of tha value of HQ units. I understand about the disbanding naval units. Maybe when they were down to 1 or 2 strength, and you only get a small return? Sort of a "not worth repairing, just scrap them" type of thing. I still think subs should either do more damage, or be cheaper. They only average 6 or so points per turn. When I intercepted the Canadian units transporting across, they took out 6 points from the transport. That's more points to repair the units right there, than the 6-8 MPP to interdict the convoy route. Of course, they were targeted by the entire Brit fleet after that, and went down without a single shot in return. Granted, it did tie up their fleet, but the AI does nothing with it otherwise. Just one other point. It would be really nice to have some way to speed up the "repair" of captured and damaged cities/ports. Maybe only possible with a corps unit inside. Like the reinforcement screen, and the corps is unavailable for combat, as they are conscripted for the labor pool. I'm already assuming that those repair points would be relatively expensive, to prevent major reconstruction in a single turn.
  2. Glad to hear that Hubert is taking our comments seriously, and making tweaks. Anyone had any success in raising the tech level of fighters and/or bombers to see what differences it makes? I tried putting 3 points into research, but got no results. At 250 a pop, they seem like a kind of risky gamble with the USSR breating down your neck!
  3. On the lowest setting (green?) I played as the Allies, and was able to hold the low countries. The AI never even got onto French soil. I ended up using all the Brit units to invade from the north, and disrupt his air power. The game ended just as USSR decides to invade, and he still hadn't even taken the low countries. It was much tougher on the higher settings, and I've never held the low countries so long.
  4. I feel the same way. Without tying up a HQ unit, the bombers are dogmeat. Unescorted is damn near suicide, and it doesn't pay off. Same for subs. I can see strategic bombing and subs being abandoned entirely, except for the use by the AI. Has anyone ever had their sub from the north sea able to get out and cause any significant damage? The computer seems to target it with just about everything, as soon as it clears Jutland.
  5. Yes, I got the same thing. I thought that the Malta air fleet and the Vichy fleet had destroyed it. I ended up restarting, and haven't seen it since.
  6. Hubert, Gotta add my 2 cents worth here. Subs are all but worthless for the Axis. Way too expensive for the 5-10 MPPs they can take out. Too easily taken out by Brit surface fleets. They sould at least be able to dive away from attacks more often. The planes on Malta are far too hard to dislodge. Surrounded on all sides by the Italian fleet, pounded by 3 German and 2 Italian air fleets, The still manage to reinforce up to 8 each turn. How? do the Brits have transporters? There should be some penalty cost for getting reinforcements through such a blockade. Strategic bombing of France by the Brits (AI) is far too effective. I have corps on all the cities, and air fleets defending each. But the Brits send over a bomber (escorted), and I lose 2 or more points on my fighters, 1-3 on the port, and he takes 1-2 hits on his fighters. The bombers get away untouched! Doing the same to Britain gets my fighters to 6 or 7, my bombers halved, and usually no result on the port (London). That said, I really like the game, and do intend to buy it as soon as it's released. Now, some questions: Is there a way to disband a naval unit? The Brit and French fleets are expensive but mostly usless toys. I'd gladly sacrifice the entire French fleet for one more air fleet or a tank army. How do you implement scorched earth? When the low countries fall, the Germans get a city and a port. Can these be reduced somehow? On the other side of the coin, how do you build up cities/ports? The ones in Norway never get above 5? Does industrial production help?
  7. With typical French military efficiency, they painted the wrong name on the side of the ship. In order to appear competent, they changed the name of the ship to match.
  8. Downloading now (42%). I'll be playing by 8:30! Now I can finally trash that Axis & Allies CD!
  9. Don't hurt your arm, patting yourself on the back like that, SuperTed. Wouldn't want any reason not to continue with the AAR. Not that we will accept any excuses, anyway. I'd fully expect you to type it out with your nose, in the event your arms were amputated. Is the next installment ready? Then why are you wasting time here?
  10. Do we get stenographers for one of those, too? Dammit, I want my share of the stenographic services.
  11. Okay, now that you've agreed to no background waves, I express my hearty support. And a bump to keep this in the limelight. So, when are you gonna post some updates? It's kinda spartan at the moment. You can't wait until the demo comes out, as you'll be too busy playing to do it then!
  12. Does anyone know exactly what the Soviet side gets to redeploy, and when? It seems from looking at the map, that just a couple of corps could really make a difference when the Germans attack.
  13. Welcome to the Real Cess, Harv (may I call you Harv?). Yes, I read that other forum, too. Whatsamatta? You get tired of drilling foxholes from 20,000 feet? Or is this the only way to keep Lorak in your sights?
  14. Yup, that's it. Japan attacked in 1939? Somewhere around there. Got their butts whupped, but good. Didn't dare attack there again, but the Soviets had to keep troops in Siberia to prevent the Japs from just walking in. There is an option, that the Soviets get to "recall" their troops, if Japan doesn't enter the war soon enough.
  15. If you do, I for one will not visit or support it. That's almost as annoying as the popup ads. Which I realize you have no control over, and are a necessary evil of free hosting. But please, no background sounds/music.
  16. Berli, I think your Monday Machine is due for some calibration. I received a distinctly Hiram-esque Monday this week, to the point of having to temporarily abandon CM for a few days. If this continues, I shall have to go to church and say some very un-Berli like words. If that has to happen, I'll start spreading rumours that you're really a nice guy.
  17. How about non-interactive, visual terrain enhancement graphics? Then again, doodad doesn't sound that bad after all...
  18. LOL! Imagine the newbie questions regarding that one! "Why is it called that?" "who's he?"
  19. So, then the next AAR is well underway? Hint, hint. SuperTed, we all wait with baited breath (or is that just the onion bagle I had?) for the next installment. Don't drag it out, give it to us wholesale! If you are trying to stretch it out until the demo, you can always do another one from the allied side, or one with the options all cranked up as a comparison.
  20. Hear, hear. Superted, if ya got time to post, ya gots time to play another game. Get cracking! An AAR from the other perspective would really give an idea of the capabilities of the AI.
  21. Shooting the vodka canisters? That's alcohol abuse!
  22. Make sure the heatsink is still firmly fastened with the clip doohicky. Thermal paste is a must for Athlon processors, too. If you do remove the heatsink, in order to reseat it or whatever, make sure the little temperature probe is sticking up. It should touch the bottom of the CPU, or at least be very close. A little thermal paste on it (to more acurately reflect actual temp) doesn't hurt. If your system overheated, it might have melted out the thermal paste, so the heatsink isn't really in contact with the CPU any longer. It must be firmly in contact, not resting on the edge of the socket. Moving the unit may have also jogged it loose. Check the heatsink first, and then make sure the CPU fan is working.
  23. Oh, no ya don't, Seanachai. I may have been drinking, but not I wasn't that drunk. And if you've got it in mind for a quest, forget it. I'll turn on you. Maybe open the door for Sir Yeknodathon late one night. Then you'll be sorry.
  24. Not fast enough! Where's that whip?
  25. I resent this. My name is spelled with "e", not a "3". And the final "e" is silent. N00b.
