2. Okay here goes... San Antonio, TX Which I hope to be leaving soon, via... Ft. Hood TX Ft. Benning GA Oxford MS Ft. 3. I've always had a bit of sympathy for Clark and any other general who's cursed with an incompetant higher command. First, he had to deal with Churchill who was a bit like Hitler in that he "knew" exactly what had to be done. His saving grace was that he was definitely the smaller fish among the Allies, so many times his suggestions could be overruled. Alexander had a bad habit of couching his orders in the form of suggestions rather than orders. Which tends not to be the best way to deliver an order...especially when your subordinate isn't the most initiave laden man on God's green earth. I don't think Clark was a great general by any stretch of the imagination, but he wasn't the worst either. As for not breaking out of the Anzio beachead...well, I'm not sure that would have been the wisest course anyway. Consider the flood of German reinforcements that came in to secure the line. Then consider the horrible consequences of having the beachead cut off and surrounded. Then consider the fact that the landing was done with the full knowledge that most of the landing craft were going to be shipped to England to prepare for Normandy within days. If Clark moves those forces in, thereby dispersing them, there's a decent chance that the German counterattack is more effective. As it was, about the only thing that saved the beachead was that it was packed into such a small space that they knew where the Germans would have to attack. I could be wrong of course, and I do tend to be a bit more cautious than most, but to have had the forces in Anzio destroyed because they had overreached thamselves would have been a disaster.
 4. If you go to download.com, there is a much easier to use decoder there called "DBPowerAmp" I got that one and used it. For the PC, once it's installed, all you have to do after you unzip the files is right click on them and select "Convert" Then you specify what you want them converted to and where you want the converted files to go. Much easier in my opinion. [ 06-25-2001: Message edited by: Wolfpack ]
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by KwazyDog: I recently finished up the Panthers series for instance and managed to get detail in there such as the rounded inserts on the rear of the turret where the side armour meets the rear, the lip where the front armour plate meets the top, the ball MG, a reasonably detailed exhasust system, brackets for the side skirts and a quite detailed cupola Dan

So when do we get the shots of this new and improved Panther?
 6. Thanks MD...there's a good bit about the FSSF in the book. They were very highly respected by everyone they served around apparently. The guys who talk about them have nothing but praise.
 7. Hey hey, I got Jackson...the South's best general. I'm sorry for all you poor guys who got Lee. I guess it's okay, since they obviously consider Lee a good general.
 8. Has anyone done any Anzio scenarios? I've been reading "The Rock of Anzio" From Sicily to Dachau: A History of the U.S. 45th Infantry Division, and it got me to wondering if there had been any scenarios made either of the German attempt to bisect the beachead or of the breakout. Sounds like some decent material for a scenario or two. (Good book by the way, the author uses a lot of soldier's recollections in it, which of course, makes every German tank have an 88. To take them at their word, all the Germans were hopped up on something constantly, and there was nothing but Tigers and Elephants in Italy. That said, it's still a good read.)
 9. I just d/l the randomizer to try it out with my friend and wow...big difference. We played to a draw which is quite unusual for us, but the randomizer made us a whole lot more cautious, and it showed. I'm very impressed with your work. Thank you for a great utility.
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Freak: No, not at all. But either did the IS-3. That's why the IS-3 didn't make it to combat. The IS-3 while it was a good conceptual design which lead to better overall soviet tank design was not in the war for good reason, it suffered reliability wise. If the tank wasn't in WWII and by that I mean in any battle or secondary action at all, then why have it modeled? I only see "what if" potentials and if that is the case, why not model the maus or the panther F? There are enough technical specifications of Maus and Panther F so that it could be designed in CMBB.

Point taken, but at least BTS knows how the IS-3 turned out. They can model what it actually was, not what they THINK it would have been. With the Maus, you're taking a vehicle which most likely never saw active use, little testing and inputting values for what it should have been, not what it actually would have been. You can't know exactly how it would have performed, while you can with the IS-3 since it was finished and produced. Now, as for the Panther II, that's a bit more iffy since it was a much more conventional design and I think you could get a pretty good idea of what it would have done. But it still comes down to that BTS can use real, and actual figures for the IS-3, while they can't for the late German designs. That said, I agree with you..if you can't do one or two for both sides, then none should be done. That is just my opinion though, and I'm pretty dang sure that BTS isn't going to put what I think ahead of what they want. And that's fine with me, it is their baby. And then there's always that other arguement, "You don't have to use it."
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Freak: I am slightly miffed. I am having trouble understanding why a tank which wasn't in action in WWII (at least from information I have read) is being included in (as close as it gets to realistic) WWII game (simulation). I know that Steve said it was because the IS-3 was one motha tank, but I am having trouble understanding this mainly becouse there are lots of motha tanks (maus comes to mind) which would be cool to see in the game as well. I guess my main concern as well, as fickle as it may be is that; what QB's will become or potentialy may become if a tank which was not really involved in WWII is in the game and is an option in a QB. I guess the short answer is to just make game parameters clear before the game has begun, so that the unwanted tanks are not picked. Anyway, I am just trying to understand the decsion of modeling vehicles that were not operational in WWII battle. It just doesnt make any sense to me to do it mainly because of reasons above, and because there are other cool AFV's which in my mind could equaly be modeled in the game as well.

I believe the answer to this is that the IS-3 was produced, therefore, they can get data on their performance and such. The Maus had two prototypes, one of which was destroyed. There is no way to determine if the design of the Maus was a good one or not. Sure, it was big and ugly and had a nifty gun, but would it have ever been more than a (slightly) mobile pillbox? You don't know, they don't know, so how can they be expected to do any kind of accurate representation. Same for the other late German designs. Most were only prototypes, or had seen no action. They can't just make up performance characteristics, there has to be some solid data for them to go on. Look at the Panther...coming off the drawing board, it looked like a great design, but it had huge problems for quite a while. Can you honestly say that a super heavy behemoth like the Maus would have come off the lines exactly like the designers planned? I think not.
 12. Yes, Jason, I seem to recall the second half of our campaign was scheduled to start about now was it not? No problem...I can imagine what a pain it was to do...I have problems enough keeping up with my PBEM games. It was a very fun experience, and even something small like that to be automated would, I think, please a goodly number of CM fans.
 13. I've never experienced the bug...what exactly happens?
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Jeff Hays: One of my favorite gun is the 75mm Inf gun. I use this little devil in city fighting, woods, and open terrain. It is quite effective at taking on infantry at long ranges and it is movable by it s crew. It even has a good chance of at least damaging a tank and not to mention a great halftrack killer. They almost always end up dead but nothing better to have enemy infantry occupy a building only to be faced with a 75 inf gun sitting a few rows over pounding them with infantry support of course.

I have to agree, the 75mm is a good one...good against most targets short of heavy armor. The best part is that it is relatively mobile. I'm playing one game where my kubel got shot up stranding the gun. So I had the crew push it up the hill to a spot where it can see the enemy and is covered by some MGs and fired away. It takes light buildings out in about one turn, and does well against inf. My friend got one that managed to take out 2 of my churchills as they crested a hill one turn. That one got me pretty angry, but since I've been using them, I have nothing but praise for them. 15.
quote:
Originally posted by SenorBeef: There was a big discussion a while back (search for "Are hill crests cover?") about height advantages and such. They're simply not modelled. The only advantage to height is observation.

I wouldn't say that observation is the only advantage. If you can get your men that close to the top of the hill, heavy direct fire weapons have a big tendency to overshoot, since they're aiming a a very small point. I've had this happen in countless games, I had a priest shoot at a mortar and MG sitting just on the crest of a hill for 3 turns without scoring a hit until they finally took him out. But you're correct that there is no cover bonus.
 16. Probably this one since it has more replys. Maybe we should try some teamplay PBEM games if we're thinking that much alike.
 17. Well, just figured I'd get this started again...maybe this will inspire a certain GM to post us an update on the progress of the end of the first/beginning of the second round?
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by Pvt. Ryan: The MG can decimate the enemy too.

Awww man, I thought maybe someone had made a mod that made your troops urinate on the dead enemy...bummer.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Mike the bike: Mannheim maybe YOU should read Gunner's post again!! Which was repeating the point that I repeated that you commented on that I didn't need to repeat!!

Whoa whoa...confusion. Gunner was referring to CMII the engine rewrite, I think you're referring to CM2 the eastern front...am I correct? Or has someone put down the wrong thing? From Now on, maybe we should refer to the engine rewrite as CM:ER? Or CM:IE? To avoid confusion like this.
 20. Yeah, the levels can vary, as My friend and I both experienced. In two QBs, once he got green and I got crack troops, and the next game I got conscript and he got vets. Neither game lasted very long.
 21. Sure, I'll try it out for you. What the heck? You going to e-mail it to me? Or do you have it posted somewhere?
 22. What kind of terrain is it exactly? I might be willing to try it out...I've been using the same one since about 3 days after I got the game.
 23. There's one or two over at CMHQ...here's the link. http://www.combatmission.com/mods/interface2.asp
 24. I'm running on 2K...never had any problems other than not being able to see fog. That's because I'm running the stock Gateway card though. What kind of trouble are you having?
