1. My favorite bit of luck happened last night in a QB, and was due more to my own stupidity than anything else. =) Playing a QB defense, I sent my lone tank, a KT out toward a hill where I wanted to get a hull down to try and spot his armor. Unbeknownst to me, he had a couple of infantry squads in the woods by the hilltop. In the span of 1 turn, I got near the top of the hill, spotted the infantry, and had taken out 8 of the squad members. Now, instead of backing away from the infantry as I should have, I decided to keep going. Next turn, an AT team pops up and fires...luckily he missed. The 4 man squad also pops up and chunks a grenade. The grenade flies straight toward my tank, then proceedes to hit the front, fly backwards up into the air and perform an airburst over the squad which had thrown it. The rest of the squad was wiped out, along with the AT team. I think I watched that movie for 10 minutes, just laughing like crazy...wish they had a voice for that situation. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory. 2. Good lord Jumbo, nobody is asking you to forget anything. Just take the picture as what it is, an attempt at humor, and not as some kind of plot to demean anyone (Except Hitler) who was involved in WWII. I think that most everyone in this forum has a good bit of respect for all those who participated in WWII, and that photo does nothing to change that. Besides, that was pretty darn tame compared to the things that were printed back then. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 3. I can see it now... "Sarge, that gun just took out our Suburban, what now?" "Damnit son, fall back to the Taurus and hop in, we'll flank them" How about some Land Rovers for the Brits? =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 4. Well, up until June 22nd, 1941, the Germans had a good supply of tungsten, as it was one of the major items involved in the economic packages delivered by the Russians. IIRC, (And I probably don't <G>) the Germans got up around 80% of their supply through Russia right before they invaded. Not sure exactly where the Russians had their mines...in the Urals I suppose, which would have left the Germans still out in the cold even if they had completed their planned conquest. It would seem strange for Hitler, who was so fixated on economic factors by his seige mentality, to overlook this, but then, I could be wrong about the location of the Russian supplies, perhaps up toward the Finland/Murmansk area. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 5.
quote:
Originally posted by Big Time Software: But obviously we have interest in other periods, like Napoleonics, US Civil War, and Korea. Steve

Ahhh...Civil War? Man, you know how long it's been since a good Civil War game came out? Never being a fan of SM Gettysburg and games of it's like, I have to go all the way back to No Greater Glory. Now there was a fun game I'll never be able to play again....Thanks Windows 2000...bastards...mumble mumble. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 6. As for the barrage balloons, if you can find any videos with good footage of the Battle of Britain, you'll see that the British had hundreds of these things surrounding targets. Somewhere I've got a book that gives their standard layout around targets, and tells how many Luftwaffe planes lost were attributed to them. They didn't take out a whole lot of Germans, but they did serve well to funnel attacks into ranges better suited for flak and AA guns to hit. IIRC, they also had some success against the buzz bombs, taking a few out before they had a chance to reach their targets. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 7. How about a pre-war movie? One of Charlie Chaplain's best, and first (I think) talkie, The Great Dictator. Great spoof on the Germans and Italians. Plus, that speech at the end has been conceded as one of the top 50 moments in movies. Not a whole lot of war action, but it's still a classic. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 8. Hehe....Duckman shows 2 rerun episodes Sunday nights on Comedy Central. Watched it tonight while playing a couple of quick scenarios.
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Juardis: Just found a copy in my local grocery store (of all places). Intrigued, I bought it for 3.99USD. The articles seem to cover lots of different conflicts from China, Norway, US Civil War are the three I've read so far. Very interesting reads. I can't vouche for the accuracy, but they seem credible. Any way, I'm thinking of getting a subscription. Does anyone read this magazine and would you recommend a subscription (19.95USD for 6 issues)?

I used to subscribe to this one...it's not bad. You'll find a lot on conflicts we all know about, but the reason I liked it was because they often have articles on some of the lesser known conflicts and some little known facts about the larger wars. Couple of my favorites were one about the first US expedition in Korea, I think it was in the 1870s...could be wrong, it's been a long time, and one on the effectiveness of the German needle gun in the 1870 war with France. I got it for the features on things that are hard to find in books. I think it was worth the subscription price. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
 10. Well, top this. I live in an apartment complex, and get mail and most of my packages in my box (Large enough for most of my packages including a computer game) I came home on the first day I figured I had a chance to get CM after I ordered it to find...the door ripped off of my box and a note saying that I would recieve no mail until it was fixed. Of course, the office was closed for the holidays, and I have no clue where my post office is. =) Needless to say I've been searching for the post office for a few days, I think I've finally tracked it down, maybe I can finally get going today.
