  1. We talked about how to do the briefings and such for the individual sides, any decisions on that yet? LIke I said, my HTML skills are zilch, but I would pull out of the campaign to help write them up or edit reports if you need a hand with it. Lee
  2. Just a little....bump...to the top ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  3. I concur...I love that panzer grey. Be sure to post when you get them hosted somewhere. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  4. Any chance we could get a list of those who will be participating? I sent in an e-mail...I think I'm in but not sure. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  5. For me it just depends on where exactly the VLs are. If I notice that they are in good defensible terrain, then I'll usually try to get there first and set up a defense. If they aren't, than I'll look around and see where the good terrain is. My definition of good terrain depends on who I'm playing of course, against someone I know will run for the VLs regardless, I'll look for terrain that will allow me to flank and attack. While if I'm playing someone who will do as you say, and actively search for my main force, I'll try to find some good defensible terrain and try and plan my ambushes. Usually, that's the same thing I would do against an unknown opponent also. Personally, I would prefer to attack in almost any situation, as I would rather set the tempo and location of the battle myself. So, all in all, I'd say I personally ignore the VLs unless they are positioned on terrain that I can use to my advantage in completing my main task which is to destroy the enemy forces. I think that the destruction of the enemy forces should always be foremost in your mind except in two situations: a) Your force is so lopsidedly inferior, that it would be virtually impossible to destroy the OPFOR before being destroyed or b)The time limit is so short that you won't have time to destroy any significant portion of the OPFOR As neither of these situations is likely to come about in a MEQB(Although I could argue that point sometimes with computer selected forces ), in that context, my feeling is that destruction or incapacitation of the enemy force should be formost in your mind. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory. 6. Heck, I'm patiently waiting for the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the Russo-German Pact. It's my B-day, and I can't think of a better present that the first really early version of CM2...come on BTS, you can do it. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  7. Thanks...would be nice to get that 1/16 scale, but alas, it's a bit out of my price range. Pretty though ain't it? The 1/35 you gave me the # of is a lot closer to what I can afford. Appreciate it. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory. 8. Well, if we're talking about the future, and how information is transferred between units and commands in the Army, I can offer a bit of insight on the future (and a bit in the present actually)in the US Army. With the Force XXI systems that are now in place in at least the greater part of III Corps, the commands will all have access to the computer systems that relay nearly instantanious information on friendly and known and suspected enemy information to commanders down to (IIRC) Company level presently, but I think it was planned to eventually have smaller versions with access to information of a more tactical nature in individual vehicles. I was an operator on one of the systems, the MCS (Maneuver Control System) which tracks all movement and contact info, while others like AFATADS (Pardon me if that's the wrong letters, it's been a while ) Which is the artillery system, plot all the information for the other aspects of the battle (Fire missions ect) All the company level assets have updates posted up the line automatically up to Corps level (Possibly higher, but as of now, it was only up to Corps level) The fully updated maps including all boundries, further orders, areas, positions, ect are transmitted back down the line. In theory, updates would be recieved within minutes if not sooner. At the moment, a lot still has to be plotted manually, changes in boundries and other zones were pretty much a pain. Another problem was the system going down hourly. But the principle is really an important one, in that a company commander will have access to more information than ever before, allowing him to better understand his situation and make much more informed decisions while following his orders. We had some interesting experiences during our exercises, and in general, the system allowed all levels of command to respond to changes in the situation much faster than is presently possible. Sorry if this was a bit unintelligable, it's pretty late, and I've been out of this for about a year now, so my memory may be faulty in parts. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  9. Since this moved on to the topic of models, does anyone know if there is a model of the Tiger II with the Porche turret anywhere out there? I love the way it looks (Even if it did have problems) but I can't seem to find one anywhere. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  10. Okay, I'm a moron...I neglected to move and install the mod after I downloaded it. Like I said, my mind has been going fast lately, please pardon my ignorance. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  11. Thanks guys. Now that it was mentioned, I remember seeing Marco's Jumbo, but for some reason, it completely escaped my mind. Not sure if Tiger's Sherman mod has one, I thought I had that one installed, but then again, my brain hasn't exactly been working up to par the last few weeks. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  12. I did a search, but didn't see anything much. Has anyone done a good hi-res mod of the jumbo? Or is there a good one in any of the packs out there. I was playing a QB tonight and realized that my Jumbos were the only vehicles I had that weren't nice and spiffy looking. Any opinions on a good one to get? ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  13. Hmmm...if there is one, I've never heard it...lord, maybe I'm going deaf too. I knew I was getting old, but this is rediculous. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  14. And no, it's not graphic related...I just have one little request. I want a sound...just a small one when my TCP/IP opponent sends me a message. The print is so small, I miss probably half of the messages because I'm not looking at the corner...maybe I just have horrible peripheral vision, but I like to think it's just because I'm so intent on beating my victim errr...opponent...down. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  15. True, but if you go hull down in a Brad, you're still leaving a good 3-5 feet above your cover, plus 2 crewmen. With the LAVs new unmanned turret, you can poke the gun out and leave your crew behind cover. On the negative side, I would NOT want to be stuck in one of these things knowing how often systems (Especially new US Army systems) go down. Hate to be left blind in that thing. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  16. Was I looking at the wrong picture? I assumed that we were talking about the 8x8 wheeled with the 105 mounted in an unmanned turret. It would seem to me that if you're hull down and the only thing showing is your gun, you aren't giving much of a sight picture to shoot at. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  17. Okay, here's a question that nobody has asked yet, but having been a Brad crewman, I was wondering. What is the silhouette of the LAV? The Brad has a very high one (Of course, because it's designed to carry men around). We know that a low silhouette is better on a battlefield, and one thing I have seen about the LAV that I like is the turret design. If you can use the advantages of terrain, it seems like it would be damn effective. Can you see this thing in a hull down aspect? ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  18. Any idea when the IBCTs will be upgraded to Force XXI standards? Or if there are any plans to do so at this time? I was working in III Corps and 4th ID HQ the past couple of years and was favoribly impressed with the technology they're using, although mobility seemed to be a big hangup, there had been only one actual "field" exercise by the time I left. (By field I mean, actually in the dirt, not in the Force XXI parking lot) I know that 1st Cav was next in line, to get the workup, but since they're using the IBCTs as test beds for the LAV and newer weapons, it seems like they'd be a natural to be the first to implement Force XXI C&C...unless they'd rather wait until all the bugs are definitely worked out here in Texas. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  19. Link worked fine...nifty picture. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  20. I'll tell you why it attracted that crowd in Asheron's Call...E-Bay. People could powerlevel characters in a couple of weeks if that, and then turn around and sell them...some of the high level chars were going for thousands...couple of hundred dollars for just certain items. Really took a lot of fun out of the game for me. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  21. What you see on TV are more akin to the flashbangs, lots of light and a huge noise. With frag grenades, if you see flame, you're probably about to be punctured by a hail of projectiles. =) They're mainly lots of smoke and a very loud noise...still quite impressive though, just not like all the Rambo grenades that blow up houses in an 80 foot fireball. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  22. I think it would be a good idea. I can occasionally get my units to do it properly , but only in very limited circumstances. What I do now is if I know that a unit will be in my ambush area in the next turn, I'll guesstimate how long it will take him to get there, pause, then give move fast orders. Sometimes it works, then there are times when I'm relegated to watching the movie screaming, "NO YOU BASTARD MOVE IT!" Like the M10 driver and commander couldn't realize that, "Hey, if we sit here long enough for that KT to turn around, he can kill us" It would be more realistic and allow us to use units better, specifically units that generally are good in ambushes such as infantry AT weapons and TDs. Course, there are times you want that unit to fire more than once, so there would have to be some way for the unit to bug out when it had to, and not just after it fired it's first shot. That would probably be the tricky part. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  23. Would seem to make sense...not like a FO has to stand on a rock and wave his hands while he watches shells fall. Seems to me that he'd want to find himself a clump of bushes, get himself a nice hidey-hole with a decent view and watch the fun. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  24. Personally, the moment that really got to me in SPR, and really the only one, was right at the beginning. You can watch all the movies you want, but to really realize what war is all about, go to a military cemetary. I've been to Arlington a couple of times, and every time I go, I get chills. It really brings home that THIS is what war is about. Regardless of the reason, that is the final result, a lot of people dead. When I was at the University of Mississippi, I would go to some of the military cemetaries around there, and even 120-130 years removed from the event, it still hits home. Nearly the entire college enlisted and fought in the civil war, and few returned to their homes afterward. Not to say that war isn't necessary, in some cases it is, but to think on what we've lost as a result...it's just something that many people don't think about. ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
  25. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by CMplayer: That probably wasn't their grenade, but your own tank's nahverteidigungsvaffen or however you spell it. It's a little grenade launcher in German tanks which shoots up little black squares once in a while and does a number on infantry. regards, --Rett <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Actually, watching it, it was definitely their own grenade, I had been tracking all the other grenades they had thrown (Especially the two that landed underneath my engine compartment <shudder>) and I am positive that it was their own. I should mention that it was a large slope, so most of their grenades were rolling back down to begin with, but that was the first one that actually hit...it felt like that scene from Spaceballs where Barf ripped those pipes off the wall and used the Spaceballs own fire against them. =) ------------------ It is nearly always better to be beaten and learn, rather than to win and take no new knowledge from that victory.
