  1. Some good and interesting points, Steve. In many ways I find CMSF is changing the way I play a wargame, and my expectations of the outcome. One example of this is, when playing Blue v Red (to date my preferred mode), as the Blue side I generally accept that I almost certainly have vastly superior firepower and weaponry, and probably better trained and equipped soldiers. BUT the big difference here, compared to say WW2, and very much in tune with the political and social pressures of today, is that every Blue casualty is for me a potential 'news headline and a tragedy' that has serious repercussions, even if imaginary or abstracted in game terms. So I play with force preservation very much in mind; every loss of friendly life detracts from the overall satisfaction of winning, and so affects my battlefield tactics. In previous games I would fight on, no matter the casualties, as long as I had at least a chance of winning. Now, that is not enough. What would be an awesome augmentation would be if there was some way (I accept this may not be possible) of bringing civilians into the battles in a less abstracted way than currently, which would once again greatly alter the way we approach a battle. Currently, although I take some care with my own forces, I happily wreak as much destruction on the opposing side as I can, going for the highest enemy casualty rate as necessary, by any means available to me, to acquire victory. If those buildings that I'm about to raze actually held families of non-combatants (which would realistically have to have civs visually represented, I think), it would once again change the nature of the battle very radically. And this is, of course, an issue that soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan etc are having to deal with right now, every day. It would obviously make battles far more difficult, and if badly implemented could make them boring to the point of unplayability. So I don't know whether as a suggestion it's completely unfeasible. But several times it has struck me that my awesome Blue destructive power would be rendered pretty impotent if that building where the enemy may be holed up is a school or a hospital or a family home. It would place a far greater reliance on infantry tactics, and a much more real representation of the dilemmas soldiers in the field today have to confront. Some years ago there was a series of games that did this with some degree of success - can't remember, was it the X-Com games? Obviously, the sophistication then, relative to what SF and today's sims are capable of, is barely comparable, but it did add an element that I've not really seen represented before or since. Anyway, just my two ha'pence worth. I love the challenges that SF puts my way, and the learning curve and general appreciation of modern battlefield tactics. Bloody hell, though, I'll be glad when that low wall bug fix is released!
  2. Welcome! I'm non-military, Brit, but a wargame fanatic of manyyears. Really fascinated by you guys' real-world experience of the military and combat. You will find in Shock Force a superb, quite unique modern wargame/sim, backed up by a development team completely devoted to improving and building on it. If you're into WW2 I recommend checking out Theatre of War (big new patch incoming) and the early Combat Mission games too.
  3. Wow, what a great site. I'm kind've surprised that so much material is available for general access. Really fascinating material, though I don't got time to view much of it atm. Thanks for that Hoolaman.
  4. Yes, I've noticed that a lot of guys can take fire, possibly be temporarily incapacitated, get medic treatment and survive and even fight on, which is probably due to body armour and almost certainly wouldn't happen in a WW2 sim.
  5. Prefer not to read AARs until after I've done it myself. Too many spoilers. Anyway, I'll hang on and see which comes first - 1.06 or your upgrade. Rock on!
  6. Nice indeed! They look like they've seen a bit of life and got a few stories to tell.
  7. Webwing, I'm really looking forward to this, but getting itchy waiting for 1.06 because I found the low walls bug a real annoyance after 1.05 and so have held off playing SF for a while. Suffering withdrawal symptoms though. I'm wondering ,are you planning to update the campaign or should I download now?
  8. Looking forward to this immensely, but I'm holding off playing until 1.06. The low wall bug in 1.05 really messed things up for me. Hopefully, not long now . . .
  9. Love this one, TC. Keep them coming! Cheers! (Um. . where to put the files? I've dl'd and unzipped, but can't find a btm or graphics folder to put them in) [ January 03, 2008, 07:25 AM: Message edited by: handihoc ]
  10. OM, I think you've just wounded a composer very deeply. Actually, I think the music's pretty good.
  11. Cool Breeze, before this thread totally disintegrates into farce, I think you would be wise to follow up on some (not all) of the suggestions here, because in all honesty, you really have come to the wrong place. RichMac amongst others has made a couple of good suggestions regarding research for your 'project'. But this is a gaming forum, albeit with a number of currently or past serving military people in it, but a gaming forum all the same. As you must surely have realised by now, you are not going to get the backing and advice you need here, whatever form that backing and advice may take. Really, it's time to move on, mate. If your project is for real, good luck with it. But I think you've got as good as you can expect from this forum.
  12. That second one is much better. The other green is just too bright.
  13. If the green was toned down somewhat it would look great but . . . isn't it Euro style camo that's simply unsuited to ME theatres?
  14. Merry Christmas all at BattleFront, and all players and fans!! And oodles of good stuff to you all in 2008!
  15. You sure they went to medics? Looks to me like they found something very interesting under the road, and burrowed down to take a closer look. If you'd waited they would probably have returned with arms full of root vegetables. Well, possibly.
  16. 1) A Delete Saved Game command, so I don't have to keep delving into my hard drive to get rid of old saves. 2)The ability to drag/adjust waypoints rather than having to delete and reset them if you change your mind for movement paths. 3) damage modelling on vehicles (ToW scores v highly here) 4)can't remember 4. I'll be back.
  17. Great preview. Really gets the juices flowing!
  18. Steve, that's good news, but will 1.06 also include directional smoke? (I asked this in another thread yesterday, but got no reply). Atm smoke only goes wherever the unit is facing, which is frequently not the desired target.
  19. Duh! Yes, just seen it's been documented in other posts. Hopefully a quick fix, as in terms of gameplay it's pretty annoying.
  20. Playing the new Euphrates scenario, but when my Abrahams and MGS take up position behind low walls, they don't seem to get LOS on anything lower than 3rd level buildings.
