illo replied to Soddball's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
And whats giving away their crack status? I bet they cant see ritterkreutz from 2000m. -
You can also make em lo-res yourself very easily. Load terrain BMPs to paint shop pro (or some similar graphics program). Then resize all your terrain bmps to 50% of original. You can also decreace color depth to 256 colors for grass tiles. It's barely noticeable, but makes resulting files LOT smaller. Then just save it all and copy to CMBB bmp directory. I did this for CMBO ground tiles and have it running much faster then it used to.

Not necessarily.

Sorry to spoil you fun, but Werfergranate 21cm was really used (and widely) by luftwaffe aircraft. Also other calibers were used. WGr. 21cm WGr. 32cm I couldnt find any good english language sites telling about conversion, but here's one in german: http://www.balsi.de/werfer.htm [ July 08, 2003, 07:43 PM: Message edited by: illo ]

You're quite right. I think (Jagd)Panzer IVs are best kept well back of main formations. But always remember to keep their vulnerable flanks covered by terrain or buildings. Both in defence or attack. It's front armor is good and makes overwatching positions possible. I like to use them in pairs atleast. Keyholing will put them in danger if enemy tanks can rush in. So if you have to be using positions with narrow los make sure their sides are protected by ATGs or AT infantry. ...well what do i know? Maybe someone gives better tips, but these have worked fine for me.

AA MGs would be also fairly ineffective against bombing/divebombing attack aircraft. Those did their drops well outside 50cal AAMGs effective range (i believe it to be around 600-800m). Bomb drops were often made from steep dive at around 1-2km altitude. If attacking aircraft were strafing AAMGs would have effect, mainly psychological though. I doubt than many kills were made by shooting aircraft from ground with machinegun. One would need a lucky hit to vulnerable part like radiator or pilot. Massed machinegun fire from tens of weapons would surely be dangerous to low flying aircraft. 20-40mm autocannons would be much more effective since they would need just one or few hits to cripple attacking fighter. MG rounds generally just put neat hole in airframe and fly through where explosive cannon rounds would rip off and tear surfaces. [ June 30, 2003, 05:43 PM: Message edited by: illo ]

Propensity for AI to hit HQ tanks
illo replied to sgtabell's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
This enables a ridicilous gamey tactic which i just tried out. I bought 4 PSW 232, 3 greens 1 elite for jerries and regular 76,2mm ATG for ruskies. Map was flat and open and i took command of germans. When battle started I ordered my elite SPW to drive back and forth at fast speed on the map edge. I gave orders for green PSWs to drive directly towards enemy positions trusting the enemy would notice their incompetence and ignore them totally. The 76mm atg was spotted by my green attack team from some 150m away. As soon as russian gunners noticed that they were spotted they took aim at my elite PSW some 800-1000m away...and suprise suprise. They couldn't hit this speedster at all. Meanwhile my other PSWs just sat there 150m in front (and in full view) of ATG having a lunch break (i issued them covered arc command so they woudnt supress the poor ATG). Ivan has sharp eyes. Those axial flow jets were actually designed to be overhauled between every 10 hours of flight. This was simply logistical decision as far as ive read. Making engine life longer would have meant using costly and scarce materials which would have decreaced production dramatically. Instead they went for cheaper materials and recycling. In 1945 there were loads of latest fighters just scattered around german airfields without fuel to fly more than handful of them. [ May 09, 2003, 06:46 PM: Message edited by: illo ]

Ground Pressure .... need information
illo replied to RSColonel_131st's topic in Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin
Shouldnt area of contacting roadwheels affect bogging as much as ground pressure? (i believe ground pressure youre talking about takes only in account vehicle weight and track area.) Ie. More and larger roadwheels=better mobility. Ground pressure would be more evenly divided along whole track (ala panther and tiger). Actually that is AFAIK whole idea of tracks. To speard ground pressure on larger area. -
Thoughts about relative spotting

I recommend CMBB.
