Perfect shot........if only
Chupacabra replied to Sgt Steiner's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Not really. Blast goes into the armor. -
Pardon my ignorance, but when I see the word "grouser", images of a small, silly-looking game bird spring to mind. Anyone care to elaborate?

did we really have great generals?
Chupacabra replied to DaveN's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I think what defines a good (or great) general is that he knows how to win. Grant may not have had flashy victories the way Lee did at Chancelorsville (to think of one), but he knew how to lick Lee and he did. Ditto the Allied generals in WW2. They knew how to win and they did. In both cases there were miscues along the way - Cold Harbor and Market Garden were screw-ups just about any way you look at them. But in the end they won, and won decisively. -
And then there were 5...

Although for what it's worth, the driver of the scout car was a certain Corporal Moylan -

Take away tungsten ammo from the Shermans and watch the ricochets fly. Penetration model feels pretty much right to me. I don't think I've knocked out anything bigger than a PzIV with a front hull shot with regular AP for a good long time, but then again it's been a long time since I've put anything less beefy than a Churchill in a head-to-head situation with a cat.

Reinforcements have arrived.....

SPOILERS FOLLOW -
quote:
Originally posted by Massattack: I am pretty sure I heard my troops (US) call out "Watch out, enemy fighter!", during a bombing run on my forces in a recent scenario. This is the only time I have come across what might have been German airpower so far. The scenario was "Bootprints", which I downloaded from The Scenario Depot. I am guessing that troops receiving "friendly" fire from an aircraft would not shout out as above. However I do admit that it is possible this was an example of friendly fire, as the briefing did say to expect air support. The only airpower to appear were two bombing runs, on my infantry first, then on one of my Stuarts, resulting in 9 casualties from the first run, and an immobilised Stuart and eliminated Flamethrower unit from the second run. It was on the second run that I heard the troops shout out the warning. The area was heavily wooded, increasing the chances of mistaken identity on both sides.

Not a big deal, but in the future you may want to put some spoiler space (as above) before posting details about a specific scenario. A lot of people play double blind scenarios for their PBEM matches, so it's generally best to warn people before you give away any information that could make things less blind, as it were. Brian: In response to this: "It is. Baseball is merely "Rounders" by another name." - Not true. Having grown up in the US, lived in the UK, and played both sports, it just isn't so. They're similar, but you might as well say that football (soccer, not American) is the same as field hockey because they both involve shooting a ball into a goal. Oh, it's also not true to suggest that baseball is only played by Americans. We've got tons of Latin Americans, an increasing number of Koreans, and the greatest home run hitter of all time was Japanese (Sadaharu Oh). Is baseball played in as many places as cricket is? No, probably not. Does it really matter? May I also suggest that this entire argument is pretty much bull**** since I don't see anyone anywhere implying that Brits can't do things with balls? Well, except for Shane Warne, maybe

IIRC you'll also be able to properly entrench on the defense, rather than just starting with foxholes.

Er, you downloaded the full version? Most software companies don't provide tech support to pirates, but nice try.

Rocket Artillery to inaccurate?
Chupacabra replied to Scipio's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
If they're Katyushas, it's the same thing. A lot of surplus Katyushas wound up in a lot of different places. During the Angolan civil war, MPLA soldiers realized that two men could carry one Katyusha rocket fairly easily. Make a tripod out of sticks, and you can hit a town with one. You're not going to get any more precise than that, but if the entire town is held by the other side, oh well. -
I bet you're not going to get the formulas used. Dunno, difference of style I guess, I like the inherent uncertainty.

Rocket Artillery to inaccurate?
Chupacabra replied to Scipio's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I have not seen hard figures on rocket artillery accuracy one way or the other, but it has always felt more or less correct. What I would like to see changed is the manner in which rockets arrive, ie like tube artillery. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't rockets pretty much all come down at the same time? -
Played the beta demo and remember being quite impressed, but skeptical that it was ever going to see the light of day. A few of the games I was really looking forward to - most notably Dynamix's Desert Aces flight sim - had recently been cancelled, so I think I was resigning myself to a vast wasteland of Command & Conquer clones. I'm glad I was wrong.

Having failed miserably to suss out my fellow geeks in the Czech Republic, I will try in the home of the Caesars - I'll be in Italy for roughly a week starting two days from now. Bearing in mind that I'm a reprehensible drunkard who will head straight for the bar and that I speak absolutely no Italian, does anyone is those parts feel like meeting for a drink (or seven) and talking grog stuff?
