"How reliable was the swingfire and striker?"
Swingfire, if I recall correctly, had a quite long minimum range. It was fired upward then had  to be gathered into the LOS. So a Swingfire missile could be halfway down a standard CM map before the gunner got proper control of the missile. Wiki says minimum distance is 150m. That would be arming distance, it could be 700m or more downrange before the gunner got the missile in the crosshairs.

This may be the easiest of easy outs for Ukraine. Vlad Putin is 71 in a country where male life expectancy is 69 and falling, and a year ago Putin was looking very shaky, health-wise. A successor, whatever his stripes, is less likely to have his ego tied up in prosecuting the war. Unfortunately, the waiting game can seem like an exercise in futility. I can produce a laundry list of geriatric politicians, jurists and world leaders that I want to say 'Just die already!' But they never do.

IIRC: A change of Premier. Chernenko died. Gorbachev got in. Gorby wasn't keen on the war.

There were social and economic factors, like @A Canadian Cat mentions, but in a state where the repression dial goes up to 11 it's hard to see how they could be decisive.
That certainly seems to be what we're seeing today: Putin doesn't seem to care about casualties, economic damage or the potential for social unrest. Russia will pull out of Ukraine when whoever's in the Kremlin decides to and it's really not clear how Ukraine and the West can exert pressure to force that decision.

A historical question. What prompted Russia to withdraw from Afghanistan, and can we draw any conclusions from it in regard to the future of Ukraine? How is it similar? How is it dissimilar? We've had plenty of similar debates circling around why the US withdrew from (Vietnam, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, etc etc etc).

I think the Russians are pulling a 'Russian rebels' move on the Ukraine border. Doing to Ukraine what the Russian rebel fighters are doing to them. Make a limited incursion across the border more as a propaganda move than anything else, Watch your opponent scurrying around trying to counter it, embarrassing the enemy. Any actual strategic importance? Not much, probably.

If the wind is blowing things get worse. Pay attention to which direction the grass is waving. Though trying to compensate by plotting my mission 'upwind' rarely gets the desired results.

Patton in his pre-war writings considered the tank mg its primary and most useful weapon (Considering what cannons were mounted at the time maybe he had a point). More than 60 years later an M1A2 Abrams commander during Fallujah complained in this sort of fighting his tank is little more than an over-size mg platform. He wasn't complaining about the mg, he was complaining he only had one. Sherman at least had two.

I've found myself trapped in a cycle of spotting round... spotting round... spotting round... out of sight of the FO. I've had to scamper him into a better position to spot the impact to get the mission to commence.

Ukrainian morale and recruitment are bad because no one wants to sign up for a war they suspect their side might be losing. The Ukrainians feel that way in large part because the MAGAT faction in the U.S. managed to screw up the aid flow for months. What is needed now is strong enough statement of western support to convince the Ukrainians we are not just stringing them along. And in return the Ukrainians need to mobilize several hundred thousand people.
The fastest way convince the Ukrainians we mean it is to put people on the ground in the support roles that takes a decades training to be good at. Contract/NATO aircraft maintainers are the most obvious case but there are a lot of similar technical jobs that the crash six week course just doesn't work for. If we really want to make a splash we need to go from strongly discouraging former F-16 pilots from volunteering for Ukraine, to strongly encouraging it.
Everybody assumed that the the Russians would be the tiniest bit rational about throwing good money and lives after bad. We were wrong, we all need to take a deep breath and stay in the fight.

...Which would have necessitated unbuttoning, which in Fallujah would be suicidal.

A standard rule of thumb is the attacker always has the initial advantage. They get to choose where, when and by what method to attack. Initial defense is reactive. This is what got Egypt over the Suez canal and into Sinai, what got the North Vietnamese army into  Huế, and the German army behind Bastogne. Then, after that, comes the rest of the battle.

By the time Trump enters office in 2025, if it comes to that, Russia should be down to seven running tanks at the current loss rate
