  1. Within the range of a CM map? I think that would be *possible* without being at all likely. Willing to be proved wrong.
  2. I think things like this can be addressed by having areas of no-delay around the various units. So for targets within 150m (arbitrary figure) no delay etc. I'm mulling over a mega-long review of tactical situations and how they could be addressed with delays on area fire but I need to wait for inspiration to commit the time to do it properly. Especially as Steve is not at all interested in introducing them
  3. I'd be happy with any fortifications subject to absolute spotting if that makes things easier. The justification is: they're not going anywhere. So if foxholes, bunkers and trenches are subject to the borg it makes no difference to me. If that makes things easier.
  4. Thought I'd bump this as gautrek doesn't seem to have seen it.
  5. The camo net going would tell the defender the trench had been spotted.
  6. I don't believe that for a second. The logistical tail of a tracked vehicle is huge compared to a wheeled one and for this specific mission a wheeled vehicle is faster, longer ranged and easier maintained. These things are prioritised over armour.
  7. Here ya go fella, they're standardising phone chargers: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/02/17/phone_charging_standard/
  8. You might add the ability to delegate and the ability to set the operational tempo from strategic resources in there. Hitler liked to stand round the map table and had his resource strategy going one way and his operations the other. Stalin let them get on with it - apart from shooting the ones who failed. However the communist system was ideal for wartime mobilitation due to the utter ruthlesness of the state in moving people around. But hey, what choice did they have. Churchill who liked to dabble - sometimes very badly - but at least let the resource strategy set the tempo. FDR was completely hands off but started the workshop of demo
  9. Apparently British troops are being issued with dynamic ear protection that allows quiet sounds to pass but blocks loud ones. Be interesting to see if it works out in combat.
  10. That's what I remember. I think it's *within and action spot* the cover of trees seen etc is shared amongst the soldiers or sumfink.
  11. (This may look familiar to some - it was posted 18/01/08) Suggestion: Area fire should have a delay and weight dependent on tactical situation + C&C (up to a maximum value). Issue to be addressed: The players ability to support with fire anywhere, given their “God like” ability to be everywhere on the battlefield. Associated issues: * Lack of player feedback causing an involved area fire process stemming from the unit spotting system. * Command delays in movement orders. I’d like to discuss these separately to not diffuse this discussion. Improvement in game-play change would bring * The C&C framework would assume proper, realistic importance. * The level of planning the player would have to make to play the game well would increase. * The tactical decisions would mirror those made by a commander in the field in sighting overwatch, ensuring C&C etc. * Ambushes, hit and run tactics, fighting withdrawals, etc would all be more useful as less instant firepower could be brought against them. * Unrealistic “lone sniper” recce where the sniper is out of C&C would become less useful. I feel all these add to the tactical depth of CM - and that’s what I’m playing the game for. Description I believe we play CM at 3 distinct levels: * Squad leader - we tell each squad where to go * Company commander – we form the plan that the units conform to * God – we can see everywhere and have access to all info our units have and can give instantaneous orders to them The player sees all and knows all, so can act as God. So I think it might be an idea to start limiting his powers. One of the innovations that CM1 brought us was command delays. I really liked these as I think they illustrated the command net and brought a level of planning to CM. I’d like to see them re-introduced but I won’t argue that here. What I would like through is similar delays when ordering area fire. In the situation above, the unit with the thick red line has LOS to the enemy unit, but the MG on the right has no knowledge of it. How would it know to fire on it? In the game he can fire straight away, so what does this do to our tactics? * We can advance a squad anywhere out of C&C and not suffer penalties to the way they integrate with the rest of the company. * We can leave support weapons anywhere and rely on them being able to instantaneously support an advance. Our tactics are changed because we suffer no penalties for unrealistic play. Proposed solution Model the command net in the calling of area fire, the main way the player acts as the central nexus of information. Give area fire a delay and weighting attached to it dependant on the firing units perception of the enemy positions, either via the C&C network or self spotting (all figures etc TBD): * If the unit can see the enemy - no delay, maximum fire density * If the unit has a sound contact - minimal delay, 90% fire density * If the unit has a tentative contact - medium delay, 70% fire density * If the unit has no sight of the enemy, the shortest communications delay between any unit that can, via CoC, OR some upper limit (more for WWII), to simulate ad-hoc contact, 40% fire density * If there is no enemy unit visible to any unit, maximum delay and light “recon by fire” 20% fire density I feel this addresses the fundamental issue of Player as God - it removes the ability to USE the information gathered by the player due to his playing a game.
  12. It's easy to be cynical about these things but AFAIAC this will do good whatever the motives.
  13. Amazing news. It seems very altruistic to me and, well, good: Will it work? Will it improve the lot of his fellow man? It sounds like. Lets hope everyone else follows suit.
  14. IIRC Sgt Muhammed is going to release it as a standalone. It's basically what he lives for but he's a bit shy and masochistic so you need to PM and write loads of abusive mails until he gets to it. Some people just need motivation.
  15. You're not my guest. I have no obligation of hospitality to you. We do have a duty of civility on this board though and I'll honour it as I'm sure you will. Sergei actually said "No part of Normandy landings is an untold story, at least from the American perspective. Everything about them has been told again, again, again and again, ad nauseum in millions of books, documentaries, movies, games and other works.". I'm sure you've re-read it yourself. I think this particular movie sounds crap, for reasons stated. What's interesting about throwing men against lead? To illustrate the futility of war? Don't we know that already?
  16. You're not the thread police and this is not your thread. It's not for you to say what is or is not discussed or who can or cannot say what. I've given my thoughts on the movie and the reasoning behind it on the first page. You're welcome to comment on them if you wish.
  17. Would you have an African bushman who was a professional baseball player refuse to judge "The Natural" on the accuracy of its baseball scenes? Just with JonS being a professional soldier and all (even if it IS the artillery).
  18. I put infantry and a spotter on the left hand hill then used my recce armour as bait to trigger the ATGMs. Roll them over the crest then roll them right back. Look for ATGM launches. Kill the ATGMs. Do it again until you're confident you've seen them all then occupy with armour. Against a smarter opponent I'd roll the armour up then retreat the same way.
  19. Spoilers of course: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Pooh: I recce'd up the left hand ditch and extreme right hand side, stopping when I met any resistance. I always recce with 2 teams - one 50m behind the other so I can see what killed them. I got stopped on the left by what looked like an ATGM so I had the survivors stop and tried to sneak round with the surviving team. I went more to the middle and met more resistance there so dug in. I had a lot of joy on the right so I re-enforced there when I got my first lot of re-enforcements. I was going fine there until I hit the buildings with the damned minefields (these are what caused me most casualties). So I took up the reverse slope there with my AAVs and went up the areas on the left I had under observation. I got a lot of spots on his ATGMs firing at distributed infantry teams and could bring down arty and airstrikes on his centre and back areas. I had an FO on the left and an air spotter in the middle as close as I could get without being under fire. These did most of the heavy lifting with the Apaches knocking out a lot of his hidden armour. The rest I took out with Javelins. When I got to the brow of the left hand hill I shoot-n-scooted my recce armour to bring out the ATGMs. I had a lot of teams on the crest to spot smoke etc. From there I either supported with fire from the right flank or took them out with arty. I don't think I took a single ATGM hit to armour although I did lose some to RPGs. When I got my heavy armour I put them on the crest of the left hand hill. When the Syrian heavy armour came it was a bit of a shooting gallery. One tank made it to the centre I think. I then pushed up on the left until I had clear LOS over to the right again leaving my tanks in overwatch. I put the rest of the AAVs there too. I then pushed forward from the right. I got to the building complex on the extreme top right and re-enforced with a sniper team and a Javelin team. The Jav team took out the final enemy armour and I had support from both flanks to the centre. I assaulted the centre areas with massive support. Basically levelling anything I heard a shot from. The AAVs are great for clearing trenches. Ended then with a Total Victory - great scenario.
  20. My wife and I are watching Who Wants To Be A Millionaire while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, "Do you want to have sex?" "No," she answered. I then said, "Is that your final answer?" She didn't even look at me this time, simply saying "Yes." So I said, "Then I'd like to phone a friend." And then the fight started.... ******** After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' And she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office! She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten Disability, too' And then the fight started..... **** Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.' My loving wife of 10 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?' And that's how the fight started ... **** My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, 'Do you know her?' 'Yes,' I sighed, 'she's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.' 'My God!' says my wife, 'Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?' And then the fight started..... **** I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of his car. You know how sometimes you just get soooo stressed and little things just seem funny? Yeah, well I couldn't believe it.... He was a DWARF!!! He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and shouted, 'I AM NOT HAPPY! !!' So, I looked down at him and said, 'Well, then which one are you?' And then the fight started..... **** I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. 'I'll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.' He said, 'Aren't you worried about the mad cow?' 'Nah, she can order for herself.' And then the fight started..... **** A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, 'I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.' The husband replies, 'Your eyesight's darn near perfect.' And then the fight started.....
