GhostRider3/3
Only one Kompanie of the 503rd had the IIs, the rest were Tiger Is. Yes thank you for correcting me. I believe some of the other earlier versions were sent to Panzer Lehr as there are photos of some left behind, or burnt up from either crew, or some other means of destruction near St. Lo.
Pak40
Excuse me for chiming in late to the discussion here, but wont the rarity option lead to some ahistorical encounters? If Tigers operated together in "heavy" battalions then the likelihood of encountering a second or more tigers should be increased, not decreased.
dan/california
And you can make scenario to reflect that, but you better send a lot of Shermans and a lot of help after a four Tiger platoon. The points are also designed to produce vaguely balanced quick battles. Which means Tigers pretty much have to be expensive. Actual scenarios are not required to reference points at all. Although if one sides point total is triple the other ones it should probably show in the victory conditions.
Sergei
Rarity can be turned off or relaxed, so you can bring Tiger battalions to the field if you feel so. Rarity is just what it says - you won't be seeing many uncommon objects if it's cranked to the tightest setting. It won't guarantee a typical overall force, though, given that the player is allowed to purchase his force. He can enter the battlefield with a fleet of halftracks carrying only Bazookas and snipers, if he sees that to be reasonable.
ChrisND
Excuse me for chiming in late to the discussion here, but wont the rarity option lead to some ahistorical encounters? If Tigers operated together in "heavy" battalions then the likelihood of encountering a second or more tigers should be increased, not decreased. In Quick Battles, the vastly more important factor is balance, so Tigers have to be rare, as they properly were (provided rarity is being used). Outside of Quick Battles rarity doesn't matter.
MikeyD
If Tigers operated together in "heavy" battalions A common complaint among Tiger commanders (and coincidentally among M10 TD commanders as well) was how their tanks most often were parcelled out in dribs and drabs to act as infantry support and to plug hols in the line. So 'heavy Tiger Battalions' may be mostly for organizational purposes only by 1944. Similarly, in the game you can also purchase an entire towed U.S. AT gun battalion with one click if you wanted. That's how their TO&E looks on paper. But I doubt anyone ever saw a full battalion of AT guns all together in one spot facing the enemy.
Ryujin
One question in general, do you actually get a discount for buying things in their proper formations (and then chopping off any bits you don't want) vs cherry picking? i.e. would a company of bazookas and snipers in halftracks be noticeably more expensive (in rarity or normal points?) for being complete TOE heresy vs a "proper" mechanized company? Is there any downside to rampantly cherry picking your force out of individual units vs just adding a bit to an existing formation?
